Critic Reviews for Unbox: Newbie's Adventure

Unbox gets everything right in theory, but fails to actually deliver on the majority of its goals. The character design, the core ‘unboxing' mechanic, and the collecting side to the game could have been great but there are just too many problems standing in the way for it to be truly successful. We can't help but feel that the game just needed an extra dose of love and attention on the technical side of things because, if that was at the standard of the creativity and fun of the characters and ideas, it would have been a great experience and a whole lot of fun. As it stands, it might not be quite worth your time.

A nice adventure that has a lot of technical issues and some control problems.

Unfortunately, it falls into some of the some old trappings of the genre that prevent it from joining the great 3D platformers that it is clearly inspired by. Samey worlds that are larger than needed are Unbox: Newbie's Adventure's biggest bane; the game may have benefited if it had smaller and more concise worlds. As it stands, if you are a fan of 3D platformers and are intrigued by this game's unique control scheme, it's worth giving a shot — just be aware that it can fall victim to some of the genre's more frustrating problems.

Despite the outside-the-box premise and the unboxing mechanic, this package is a by-the-numbers platformer with a few rough edges. 'Feel' is a huge part of a platformer and in that regard, Unbox: Newbies Adventure is fine for the majority of the time, that is, until the physics decide to freak out.

Unbox: Newbie's Adventure has its shortcomings, but what it offers at its core is all that you can really ask for. It's a proud collectathon, and the three bustling open worlds really allow this fact to shine.
