Critic Reviews for Raw Data
While one mode is a bit technically spotty, that becomes immaterial when the entire package is brought into focus. Raw Data is absolutely the game that every VR owner should play. It has humor, scares and a metric crap ton of cool ways to blow things up, all with some major replay power to keep headset on and sweaty. It just feels great to play and looks sharp while doing it. Raw Data can convince people of what virtual reality can do and stands as the best overall title for the platform.
The recurring theme here is substance. On paper, creating a wave-based shooter doesn't sound all that inventive or ambitious, yet Raw Data is just that. In a bid to capitalise on the VR gold rush, we've seen plenty of smaller, lacklustre shooting galleries, but Survios effortlessly puts them all to shame.
Raw Data is like the final solid release of VR gaming's first wave, and the beginning of the second. It's gorgeous and features a large, expansive world, but it does still offer the same wave based shooter gameplay that has dominated the VR space. It does it much better than most of its competitors though, and the added touches of turrets, multiple weapons, and special abilities really bring it to a new level.
When you take a step back and look at what Raw Data is attempting to accomplish on the PSVR, it's remarkable what they were able to pull off. Better yet, it's one of the few VR experiences that I've played that feel like they've graduated from extended tech demo to a fully formed gaming experience. Unfortunately, while the ambition is certainly there, it feels like the hardware is once again preventing a standout title from achieving its potential greatness. Raw Data is an experience that is most definitely worth exploring, just don't expect your eyes to be overwhelmed with what they see. Suit up soldier. It's about time you cause an oil clean-up in aisle everywhere.
In spite of a lack of different enemies and occasionally unreliable motion controls, Raw Data nonetheless stands as one of the more intuitive and satisfying shooters available on PSVR.
Don't let a saturated wave shooter market put you off, Raw Data is clearly one of the best out there.
Raw Data might not be reaching for artistic profundity with its narrative or setting, but what it lacks in creativity it makes up for in polish and sheer entertainment value.
The team at Survios have done something few others have accomplished in the VR sphere - they've put out a whole game. It's not a concept, it isn't Early Access, and it's not a half baked demo - Raw Data is a complete product featuring a single-player campaign, cooperative multiplayer, PVP, multiple classes, and more. While there are still a few bugs to iron out, Raw Data manages to elevate itself above the usual wave shooter fare.
