Subnautica: Below Zero will launch later this spring, announced developer-publisher Unknown Worlds. Specifically, the anticipated sequel will hit PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on May 14 for $29.99.
The game will launch physically and digitally and Unknown Worlds has teamed with Bandai Namco to aid with physical distribution in select regions including the Americas, EMEA, and Japan.
As the name suggests, Subnautica: Below Zero takes the adventure to the frigid Planet 4546B, an alien planet "where mysterious aquatic creatures and other watery wonders test the limits of how far they’re willing to go to survive." New tech to build, new areas to explore, and a brand-new story do well to separate this game from the misconception some had that it was an expansion for the first game. It's not. It's a proper sequel, said the team.
Alongside this sequel release, the original game Subnautica will make its debut on the same day, May 14. It can be bought bundled with the sequel for $59.99. Subnautica launched in 1.0 in 2018 after years in Early Access on Steam and Game Preview on Xbox.
It earned "Mighty" distinction on OpenCritic, our highest honors, with its 86 average and 94% favorability rating from 49 critics who weighed in on the game. It would seem the sequel certainly has big, uh, flippers to fill.
