Players will now be able to team up in Tetris 99.
Nintendo has released a new update for the battle royale title Tetris 99, adding a new Team Battle Mode. While it is similar to the team modes found in other battle royale titles, players will not team up in small groups of two to four. Instead, players choose one of four squads at the beginning of a match, and try to be the last team standing. Some teams may end up with less players, but the smaller teams will receive a boost in attack power when being attacked. Those who are knocked out early in the game will be able to go into spectator mode, and can send "Likes" to cheer on their teammates. Those who stick around until their squad has received a rank will receive XP points.
Other features coming in Tetris 99's new update include new button configuration options, new user emblems, and the option to redeem 30 in-game tickets for some of the Special Themes that were featured during earlier events. This includes the Splatoon and Super Kirby Clash themes.
Nintendo has also announced the Tetris 99 10th MAXIMUS CUP. The cup will run from December 12th at 11 p.m. PT to December 16th at 10:59 p.m. PT. The cup will be available to all Nintendo Switch Online members, and take full advantage on the game's new Team Battle Mode. At the end of the event, the top 999 players will each win 999 Gold Points that can be used to help purchase games in the Nintendo eShop.
Tetris 99 released on the Nintendo Switch this past February. The game has received a Strong rating from OpenCritic. The game is free for anyone who has a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Those who own the free version can purchase the optional Big Block DLC for $9.99, which adds several offline modes.
