Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an absolute masterpiece and the best Square Enix-branded title of recent years. A monumental work in which one breathes the love for the original work, here retraced and expanded, and which shows the new generations the true spirit of a saga capable of winning the hearts of millions of fans. There are those who will be able to make some criticisms against certain narrative choices (in our opinion, to be evaluated globally only with the arrival of the third and final chapter), the excessive abundance of content and some technical smears (especially of the Performance mode). But these are minutiae that disappear in the face of the greatness of this work, capable of reminding the whole world that Japan is always ready to amaze and wonder.

It happens a few times in the span of a video game life to come across a masterpiece capable of redefining, to some extent, an entire genre. Street Fighter 6 is one of these rare and fleeting occasions. With the new chapter in the historic saga, Capcom not only certifies once again that it has regained the polish of its best years, but also makes a fighting game destined to become a striking yardstick for the entire genre. A monumental production, as gargantuan in its single player offering as it is in its online proposition, it succeeds in triumphing in also being an incredible example of didactics, layering and depth. With a learning curve that has never been so clear and expository, capable of both pandering to veterans and training novices to ferry them toward improvement, the return of Ryu & co. is simply the best fighting game around.

In no uncertain terms, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a masterpiece. Studio Zero has poured every lesson accrued from the main Persona chapters into its first medieval adventure, crafting an experience that is both fresh yet familiar. Some of the most famous features of the ATLUS series can be found here as well, however placed in a quite different context and with an unprecedented flair capable of making them relevant and magnetic. It is impossible not to celebrate the boldness of the art direction, as well as the rich soundtrack or the kaleidoscopic and multifaceted combat system. A title of absolute excellence that impresses even more thanks to an astonishing writing that sets no limits in dealing with sensitive and topical subjects. In a word: unmissable.

When the source material is already a masterpiece, a remake capable of further improving the formula can only achieve the same status. Even nearly two decades later, the third main installment in the Atlus series proves that it is still an excellent JRPG with a phenomenal storyline and addictive gameplay. Persona 3 Reload takes all this and elevates it to the nth degree, with a new look, smoother dungeon management, and an endless series of improvements. After Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, another SEGA-signed masterpiece in this exhilarating early 2024.

Almost two decades after the legendary first chapter, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has the flavor of both a point of arrival and a dazzling new beginning. Far from revealing too much, what we can say is that Ryu ga Gotoku Studio's new title is not only, in all likelihood, the best chapter in the series. It also represents one of the best JRPGs in the recent video game landscape and, we go further, one of the first serious candidates for the 2024 GOTYs. A must-buy for practically everyone, but especially for those fans who bought Yakuza back in 2006 for the PlayStation 2: all of this was also possible thanks to you!

Dave The Diver is a serious contender for the title of best indie production of 2023. The South Korean team MINTROCKET makes a fresh work, capable of making contrasting flavors and tastes coexist in harmony, as in the best sushi you've ever had. A little bit RPG adventure, a little bit roguelite, a little bit management, and a little bit many other things. An amazing mix, capable of being shining example of how the whole is more than the sum of its individual parts. Outstanding.

Pikmin 4 encapsulates all the best of the Nintendo strategy series, a summa that represents its highest point ever. A masterpiece capable of vastly expanding all the mechanics dear to fans, putting an incredibly generous content offering on the plate. An over-the-top production (despite some minor flaws here and there), which makes even more special a year destined to remain impressed in gamers' memories for a long time. Let's just hope we don't have to wait another decade for the next chapter in this great saga. While waiting, hone the art of Dandori: you will need it!

The New Zealand team Black Salt Games debuts on the video game scene with a gem of rare beauty, dredged up from the deep sea fraught with unnamable dangers and pitfalls. Halfway between fishing simulator and Lovecraftian horror, DREDGE surprises and disorients with the magnetism of a ludic loop in which progression and sense of wonder constantly accompany the player. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a monument to aviation in its broadest and most all-encompassing form. Asobo Studio restarts from the excellent base of the previous chapter to make the Redmond-based company's historic simulation even more vast, majestic and outsized. Stemming the difficulties of the early days related to the cloud infrastructure, the production now opens up with its unparalleled offering, for the first time smiling at the audience that is also looking for a more traditionally playful facility in addition to simulation as an end in itself. With the knowledge that the title will only get better with time (and become even more technically stable), there is no doubt about it: get ready to fly the skies around the world... for real.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection represents the culmination of a remarkable journey that few would have predicted when it began nearly a decade ago. Capcom has pulled off yet another feat in a gaming generation worth celebrating, elevating a spin-off series born from a successful IP to the very pinnacle of excellence. A sumptuous JRPG, as mature in its storytelling as it is layered and satisfying in its gameplay, it’s already a contender for one of the best games of 2026. We don’t know what the future holds for this series, but one thing is certain: missing out on this adventure would be a mistake as big as a Rathalos.
