10 / 10.0 - #IDARB

I highly recommend #IDARB, and this comes from someone that doesn't play sports games, yet I knew the moment I yelled at my TV during a slow motion instant replay victory, this was special. #IDARB will be a social favorite for years to come.

Super Mario Maker sets out to give back to the players, to create their own Mario levels, and to share with the world, and it does exactly that. This is a dream come true for Mario fans and anyone with a penchant for designing their own platformers.

10 / 10.0 - Dark Souls III
Apr 14, 2016

I truly believe Dark Souls 3 is the best Souls experience a player can get out of the franchise. Newcomers can jump in, old fans will experience lots of ties to the previous games both visually and lore wise, and if this is indeed the final Dark Souls game in the series, it went out with its monster arms swinging high! It's fitting that the end would come like this, not dead and buried but at the pinnacle of its hollowed life.

After finishing the game, I felt like a great journey had ended, even if it wasn't the most thought out story. I had gotten to know more cast of characters, their journey and what was at stake. There was a lot of side characters and other interesting choices when it came to those not in my group. Yet I sat there, at the end of my journey, thinking back on everything else that came before it.

I have absolutely zero issues with Odin Sphere Leifthrasir other than knowing how to pronounce its subtitle. An old school, beautiful, classic RPG brawler reborn even better. It's doesn't get much better than this for the genre!

The combat is intense and while hard, rewarding. Stealth style goes a long way to making key moments feel even more intense as attempting to ghost an area is extremely satisfying. Yet I can mix these gameplay styles up on the fly and cater my experience to how I want to play. Leading to a game that is both extremely fulfilling and highly repayable. Dishonored 2 is one of my best gaming experiencing this year.

It’s the best way to play Skyrim when not doing so on a PC. It’s dated, as anything from 5 years would be, but everything added up, this is an extremely solid package and for the amount of content, I see no reason not to jump back into the world, unless the price point is your biggest worry. That aside, hours of time will be lost to Skyrim once again and I’m looking forward to it.

- Prey

PREY is a game that didn’t seem to have a whole lot of hype or discussion about. I’ll admit, until the 1 hour demo that Bethesda recently put up, I wasn’t really tracking much excitement either. A few minutes into the demo though and I already knew I had to play this. I promptly stopped and waited for the release of the full game. Now after completing the game with 18 hours under my belt, not only did I walk away extremely happy but I believe PREY is an instant sci-fi classic people will be replaying countless times over the years.

Thimbleweed Park isn’t going to bring any newcomers to the genre if it’s never been the type of game to draw player’s attention. Otherwise this is a wonderful love letter to the genre from one of the original creators. It’s funny, brain busting, and just a fun title that truly brings out the best aspects of the point and click genre.

- Hob

Runic Games has something special here and every facet of the game reeks of quality aside from one element. System performance on PS4 has a ton of stuttering or slow down moments. They have already updated the game a few times since it launched and the post support seems great, but this issue is literally my biggest and only issue. In an otherwise fantastic experience, captivating in its grandeur, this always took me right out of the experience. That blemish aside, every time I played Hob, I just got lost in its world, exciting to see everything the game would throw at me next. Exploration, combat, and the world all merge together in such a cohesive thought with almost no frustration, it’s just a sublime experience even with its performance issues.. Hob wasn’t on my list of must play games, or even known games for 2017. Don’t make the same mistake I did, Hob is definitely worth playing and a huge surprise.

Fans of single player games who love shows like X-files, Twin Peaks, and the sort, this is a must play. It’s refreshing to get a superbly crafted, story driven game, with no multiplayer and no micro transactions in today’s market. Fans of the genre need to have Control in their sights and I truly hope Remedy has a bonafide success on their hands. Control is one of the weirdest, fascinating, and most intriguing games I’ve ever played, a wild ride for sure. I’ll be there for the future DLC and a sequel if one ever comes.

I have adored my time with Witcher 3 on Switch. It’s not the prettiest version, but it retains everything that made the game special. Now there is potential for a whole new audience to fall in love with the franchise. Perhaps some are like me, replaying the game for the third time, and just loving that the game is now portable. Whatever the reason may be, Witcher 3 on Switch is a technical achievement. I’d have never expected Witcher 3 ported to the Switch, but here we are and it’s damn impressive.

Children of Morta is a huge surprise. Not only is it an outstanding rogue-like game, filled with quality all around. It’s an experience that is probably my favorite in the genre at this point. Combining fantastic story telling elements, engaging gameplay, and a rogue-like loop that actually has me excited to do another run each time. Add on local co-op and I don’t see how it could get any better sans an online update later. What the Bergson’s family endures in combat is only half the excitement as I couldn’t wait to see what story beat hit next. I was concerned, I cared. Admittedly once the game is over, there is no huge reason to replay other than starting the story over, or perhaps leveling up some of the other family members, but that’s so minor. Children of Morta is top notch in the genre, a rogue-like fairy tale nightmare everyone should experience.

There isn’t much here to complain about. What players get is a charming, funny, and challenging platform game that feels like a combination between an Indiana Jones like adventure mixed with elements of exploration and Mega Man like gameplay, minus the blaster. It’s a title I absolutely loved digging into and I feel anyone that’s a fan of retro games definitely deserves to check this one out. It’s a hidden treasure for sure.

The remake is a fantastic trip down memory lane, bringing arguable the best Gears of War game back and better than ever. If you already own an Xbox One and enjoyed the franchise, this is a must have title. I expect some will be jumping on board in purchasing the system just for this title alone, and I wouldn't blame them in the slightest.

9.5 / 10.0 - SOMA
Sep 21, 2015

While I still think Amnesia takes the cake for scare factor, everything else in Soma is done better here Story, visuals, and the soundtrack are superb and top tier from Frictional at this point. One of the best sci-fi stories I've ever experienced in a videogame and one that can get under your skin.

9.5 / 10.0 - Dropsy
Sep 17, 2015

I judged Dropsy thinking it was going to be a kid's game with little no challenge, randomly hugging people, and grow tiring. Instead I got a really interesting yet odd and colorful world to explore, a huge smile on my face, and a game that ultimately made me happy to see Dropsy love so many. I won't soon forget you Dropsy. Hugs for everyone!

Hearts of Stone is a fantastic addition to the Witcher 3 world that feels as if it was always a part of the game. It keeps up with the quality that one would expect. It's refreshing in dialog, hilarious at times, inventive in its quests, and even after 70 plus hours in the core story, coming back to this world was extremely easy and welcomed.

I could go on and on about how much I love Kings Quest, so I will. King's Quest is the surprise hit of 2015 so far. Chapter one is filled with so many exciting moments, fun puzzles, hilarious characters, and a unique sense of awe and fantasy. I felt like I was in a wonderfully animated cartoon based on a classic series and I couldn't stop smiling or laughing the entire time.

I loved my time with the original release and I soon found myself loving it all over again on PC. Rise of the Tomb Raider continues improving upon the new formula that was created in the last game, but here we feel that Lara really is becoming a tomb raider.
