The latest Mario and Sonic game goes for gold, but trips at the starting line.
Somewhere in this package lies a great game with plenty of excitement to offer- it just has a hard time presenting itself. Is it fun? Of course it is. With enough time and dedication, not only would you be able to master the game and its controls, but also have experienced one of those rare feelings of complete satisfaction just for having played the game. It also depends on your own tastes. Some would say that the best version of the game is the original Wii version, which is only available exclusively with the launch version of the retail game. I can't say that for myself, having only played the Wii U release, but if you're interested in Rodea the Sky Soldier, keep a sharp eye out for the retail version.
I feel like Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is what happens when you put Fire Emblem and Worms into a blender along with a comic book- so if either of those games tickles your fancy it'll be worth giving the game a try. The turn-based system and third person shooting complement each other, and while it doesn't feel natural at first, maybe in the future you'll find that traditional strategy games just don't quite cut it for you after playing Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. This game is definitely suited to players who play strategy games regularly, and I can't imagine opinions about it being unanimous. It's not a game that I'd usually play, but I don't hate it. It's a solid game, and if you're already interested I it the odds are that you'll enjoy it. If you're unsure about the game, stay away from it.
While FreezeME has all the makings of a great 3D platformer (after all, it is following in Mario's footsteps) there's something about it that just doesn't feel right. There's something off-beat about the game. It could be the iffy controls, which aren't as responsive and tight as the Mario games from which it's inspired. Tiny Living has a couple of fun new items, and the small house objective is intriguing. But there's just not enough to it to validate a purchase.
My Hero One's Justice leaves room for improvement, but gives us a decent foundation to expand the world of My Hero Academia for future games.
What Oceanhorn offers is basically a discount Zelda. The game borrows most of its gameplay from Zelda, but one should be aware that they get what they pay for. It's not well-defined or polished like a Zelda game. Instead, you can think of it as a cheaper alternative if the Nintendo Switch's premium price tag has left you a little out-of-pocket for Breath of the Wild. Do I recommend? If you already like the genre, you can probably get a few good hours out of the game. If you're new to the genre, Oceanhorn won't do you any favours.
Kill la Kill's modest first game adds something new to the series, but leaves a little more to be desired.
It's almost like a proof-of-concept for Mii characters that's arrived a little late (after all, it's been over a decade since their introduction). I wouldn't really call it a game, because the gameplay isn't the main focus. Miitopia is about having a pop star RoboCop fighting a dark lord Pikachu; the absurdity of the randomness that comes with filling a video game world with whomever you darn well please, and there's something to be enjoyed from that.
I had a lot of fun playing the game in small bursts at a time, but it's hard to keep invested when all I'm doing is beating someone up for each and every round. Let's hope that ARMS will continue the path that Splatoon laid before it by giving players new content and new things to do via free game updates. I really hope so, because I really want to see this game in a more fleshed out form!
Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water may start out slow-paced with about a dozen tutorials before the real action begins, but if you stick with the game for long enough to get settled in this is a fun adventure into the unknown. If you're a fan of horror games but aren't a fan of cheap jump scares then this is the perfect game for you. Just make sure to leave the lights on.
As much as the series has evolved over the years, The Sims 4 has the least to offer with no real additions to the gameplay besides sims being more "expressive", though really that just means that there are more character animations than before. If you're looking for a nice graphical upgrade to the standard Sims gameplay and perhaps some promising expansion packs and custom content on the horizon, go for The Sims 4. If you've already got yourself The Sims 3 and any expansion packs for it then you've probably got more content and creative freedom than you'll find in The Sims 4. Personally, I would hold out on getting the game for an inevitable price drop.
Hey! Pikmin is a great game to add to your library. It's a solid addition to the series and it freshens up the formula with the perspective shift, but having said that, don't expect a game that's on par with the previous console games. A Pikmin fix is always good though, so enjoy!
I really like playing Splatoon online, and I'd love to give this game a higher score but I can't factor out the game's blemishes in its current form. You can't even perform basic actions like acquiring new weapons or outfits for your Inkling without being forced to go online, which is inconvenient if ever the servers are down. I really would have admired more modes for offline play, and I'm disappointed by a lack of content in the base game, but I am optimistic about future updates adding new content. But when Splatoon shines, it's a fantastic game. It's fun, it's competitive and above all, it's fresh.
Just like Katrielle, this game has a reputation to live up to. And it is indeed a Layton game, just with different strengths and weaknesses.
To get the best experience out of this game, you've got to have some good friends who'll play the game with you, which works best when everyone has their own copy of the game so everyone has a reason to play. If you can't manage that, online play will still get the job done, but if you're a go-it-alone kind of person then this is not the game for you. This is easily the best multiplayer Zelda game yet and it's a ton of fun, so I would recommend giving it a chance. Just don't expect a thrilling, complex story out of this one.
Captain Toad is a fun adventure and an enjoyable little break from Mario's typical adventures. Will it hold the world over until the next big Mario game? Definitely. It's easy enough for anyone to complete but complex enough to feel kind of smart playing through it. It's a nice change to Mario gameplay without making it unrecognizable.
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 comes to Switch in all of it's glory, but with the trade-off being a less than desirable control scheme.
Overwatch has come to the Switch with a solid port, but it may not be the ideal game for the console.
