I very much enjoyed Disgaea 1 Complete, but I don't feel it's for everybody. On the surface, there's a great strategy game full of interesting and unique takes on the genre. But it's also grind-heavy, with a learning curve that can be extremely daunting. If you have a lot of time to spare, this is easily one of the better strategy RPGs released on the Switch thus far.

The courtroom cases themselves could be a tad more interesting, but the game's overall narrative is strong and engaging. We know the story of the French Revolution, but we can't necessarily imagine what it was like living in those tumultuous times. We the Revolution is a fascinating look into the moral struggles of the era, where things weren't as clear-cut as they seemed.

Aviary Attorney's clever writing and storytelling are its strongest suit, and is worth playing for that alone. It's not in-depth as other detective games, but it doesn't need to be as its other qualities more than make up for some of its shallowness. Aviary Attorney is great for those that want a short, but thoroughly entertaining experience.

It caters well to both farming sim enthusiasts and RPG players who want a little more action in between shipping crops and courting that special someone. I do admire the developer's ability to blend all of this into one cohesive game, as there's tons of things to do here and it can take hours to accomplish everything. Grinding can be a little grating, but Rune Factory's positives far outweigh the negatives.

8 / 10.0 - Roundguard
Mar 17, 2020

Gameplay is Roundguard's strongest suit. It manages to combine a number of unique gameplay elements into a cohesive game that works extremely well. Some mechanics aren't 100 percent perfect, but there's not much to complain about. It's a short experience, but Roundguard is a novel idea that was executed very well.

Despite shortcomings, the remake of the first Resident Evil title is a tense, exciting romp through a mansion that has a ton of creepy secrets. There are definite signs of aging here that make me appreciate current day luxuries, but once I got past those I enjoyed Resident Evil's puzzles, scares and horrors.

The characters and story is easy to get into, and the chapter hangs on an interesting note that sets the basis for the rest of the chapters. The voice acting is really well done, and is very faithful to the source material. It's a bit easier than other Telltale games out there and rather quick to finish, but the experience I've had with the game so far is a very enjoyable one.

M., except for the steep difficulty curve. It's definitely worth a try, but the immense challenge made it far less enjoyable for me.

7.5 / 10.0 - This Is the Police
Nov 6, 2017

This Is the Police is a pretty interesting management simulator with an engaging plot and tackles issues that feel all too relevant in today's society, despite it taking place thirty years ago. It gets kind of repetitive at times and the issues brought up don't go that deep, but I still found it to be a competent management simulator with a unique aesthetic and gripping plot.

It doesn’t take itself seriously and that’s a major part of the fun. It isn’t a blow away awesome experience, but it’s a nice, simple game that doesn’t take that long to beat. With good replay value, a pretty neat endless mode and a charming aesthetic, Kusakari is an easy recommendation for those looking for something to just pick up and play.

7.5 / 10.0 - Dragon Ball Fusions
Dec 5, 2016

Tedium aside, I enjoyed my time with Dragon Ball Fusions. The game’s battle system is pretty enjoyable, and the story is a nice change of pace from normal Dragon Ball games that just parrot stories from the various sagas. It’s nothing revolutionary, and there are certainly some problems here and there, but Dragon Ball Fusions is a fun game that takes its creative license to create an enjoyable experience.

Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy is a fun collection of titles filled with nostalgia value, presented in a wonderful looking HD package. It runs well and overall is a perfectly competent platformer. If you can forgive that some aspects of these games haven't aged well in the last 20 years, then this can be a pretty fun throwback experience.

That's not to say people should avoid this re-release, because despite the problems there's a strong game here that's worth playing and experiencing. FFIX is reminiscent of a simpler time, boasting a strong narrative and quality of life features that make it easy to get into. I just wish it had a better presentation, one that a game of this quality truly deserves.

7.5 / 10.0 - Detective Pikachu
Apr 2, 2018

Detective Pikachu is a solid, unique spinoff in the Pokemon series that stands out from other spinoffs. It's a relatively easy point-and-click adventure game that won't take much to complete in a few sittings. But some aspects of the gameplay do get clever, and the story does resonate. It's nothing revolutionary, but I can always appreciate a fun with a fun feel and colorful aesthetic.

Both games in Scribblenauts MegaPack are worth revisiting on the Switch. They aren't perfect, and can be a breeze if you're looking for something tough. But both games are great for casual play. If you can accept the faults of Unmasked, both games are worth giving another look.

The Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star continues to prove that the Ages polish to old classics works wonderfully and should be emulated by other developers. The parts that made Phantasy Star feel archaic are gone, and while it still shows its age this version of the title is the strongest you'll come across anywhere.

When it comes to Super Bomberman R, don’t expect any frills, bells, or whistles. This is a standard edition of a Bomberman experience, with a decent enough story mode and a pretty fun online experience whenever the connection was smooth. Nothing about this game reinvents the franchise, but hey -- as someone who has wanted a new entry in the Bomberman series for years, this game definitely fits the bill.

NAM-1975 is a fun game while it lasts. The game itself is short, but the gameplay is fun and the presentation is pretty sophisticated for a game from 1990, which I like. Picking up NAM isn't absolutely necessary, but it can be a fun diversion while also taking note of what SNK had in mind for the NEO-GEO hardware.

Yo-Kai differs in a number of ways that makes the experience a bit more drab. There isn't much strategy when it comes to battling, and I wish encountering and befriending Yo-Kai were a little more intuitive. Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Spectres is a solid title that overall was a pretty fun experience, but it does have its flaws.
