Liam Cook's Reviews

I'm a huge fan of Nintendo games, I have been ever since playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on N64. I possess a vast interest in a variety of genres and I'm always up for trying something new! I'm also a huge fan of indie games and won't hesitate to lend my support to any that look of interest to me.

Whilst not perfect, DuckTales: Remastered stays faithful to the NES original and its gameplay mechanics, with the exception of forced collectibles and prolonging levels with cut-scenes. Fans of the show will be pleased to know that Alan Young has reprised his role as Scrooge McDuck and he still does a fantastic job at it, despite being much older now. For fans of the classic that like the inclusion of full voice acting and don't mind exploring every inch of a level to gather items required to progress, definitely check this out. However, for those that didn't like the NES version of DuckTales and despise the unforgiving difficulty of retro titles, steer clear of this remaster.

9 / 10 - Edge
Nov 28, 2013

EDGE is a great example of value for money. With over a hundred levels to conquer, plus a familiar ranking system, there is plenty to do to keep players busy. Not only is there a fair amount of content, but the game's discounted price of £1.79 makes this easy to recommend to anyone who owns a Wii U and wants a fun, unique experience. This low price point lasts up until January 2nd, 2014, so those interested have plenty of time to grab it. Don't hesitate; at this price, the game is a steal. Go buy it now!

8 / 10 - Wii Fit U
Mar 22, 2014

Although it doesn't serve as a replacement for regular exercise, Wii Fit U is probably the best game in its genre, and with the existence of the Fit Meter, is a great way to keep track of and accompany daily activities. There are all sorts of activities included in this package, meaning that there is something for the whole family to enjoy, all whilst staying in shape! To those who are still using Wii Fit regularly, it is also possible to transfer data over to Wii Fit U, so maybe now is a great time to upgrade!

Although Stick It to the Man is fairly short, the unique gameplay mechanics and humorous nature of the game make it a worthwhile purchase. Fans of titles such as Psychonauts and Grim Fandango should definitely check this one out. However, those looking for a game to sink a lot of time into should look elsewhere. Forgetting the length and replay value, Stick It to the Man is a unique title full of harmless fun, which is more than welcomed in a world overpopulated by shooters and action games.

Squids Odyssey combines the bird-flinging gameplay mechanic of the Angry Birds games with several elements taken from tactical RPGs, to create a unique gameplay experience with an equal amount of challenge and fun. For those looking for something that is unlike anything else on the market, Squids Odyssey fits the bill almost perfectly.

8 / 10 - Armillo
Jul 31, 2014

For around the same price as a large extra value meal at McDonald's, Armillo provides a much better value and also doesn't pile on the pounds. Great for those who want to keep that beach figure for the summer! Going back on track, this unique title about a fluffy space armadillo is definitely one of the hottest games on the Wii U eShop right now, technical issues aside. For those who love space, puzzles and armadillos, Armillo is the best possible title to match those needs. Although the game currently has frame-rate problems, Fuzzy Wuzzy Games has quickly acknowledged this and is already hard at work creating a fix.

10 / 10 - Shovel Knight
Nov 24, 2014

It's hard to find something to complain about in Shovel Knight because it does everything it sets out to do perfectly - to an impeccable standard. It just proves how community input in the form of both ideas and funding can go a long way to help make such a fantastic experience. Thanks for scratching that Mega Man itch, and for also pushing to get the game available in both Europe and Australia, Yacht Club Games! Now, for those who are still on the fence about this one: Get on the eShop and buy it!

8 / 10 - Ittle Dew
Nov 26, 2014

For fans of games in The Legend of Zelda series, Ittle Dew offers plenty of puzzles and replayability to scratch that Zelda itch. The combat system may be sub-par, but that shouldn't put people off as it's only a minor gameplay element, with puzzles being the stronger focus here. At the asking price of £8.99, there's a decently sized adventure, with multiple paths, and an in-game timer that is perfect for speed runs.

7 / 10 - Devil's Third
Sep 20, 2015

Devil's Third might not be the cream of the crop when it comes to Wii U exclusives and may look a little rough around the edges due to its troublesome development, but there is a lot of fun to be had in both the single-player and online portions for those with an open mind and the ability to look past its rough exterior.

Coming back from its success of Stick it to the Man, Zoink has created something that is equally as zany and arguably funnier. Whilst it may have suffered from some minor issues at launch, Zombie Vikings has found its footing on the PlayStation Store and is a highly enjoyable co-op brawler, including some top-notch voice acting and writing!

Steamworld Heist is what many would consider a AAA indie title, with Image and Form pulling out all the stops to craft a near flawless experience that's both fresh and unique. The gameplay may differ largely from Steamworld Dig, but it's a ride that's just as good, if not better. There's plenty of content to delve into in the base game, with greater difficulties and randomly generated levels serving up a new challenge to players who have already beaten it. For those who enjoyed the previous instalment, go ahead and pick this up right now!

Whilst lacking the open world from its predecessor, LEGO Batman 3 still offers plenty of content in the form of collectables and unlockable characters, although those who have little to no interest in the source material should probably steer clear of this and pick up one of the stronger LEGO titles.
