Joey Davidson's Reviews
Here we are with work from Creative Assembly that's actually fun. I won't suggest that it revolutionizes the RTs genre the way that the original Halo Wars did. That game managed to make RTS titles fun on console, something that I didn't even think I wanted until I actually had it in my hands. Creative Assembly further innovates on that already revolutionary formula.
As far as I'm concerned, the two best original games for the Nintendo Switch are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Snipperclips. The latter isn't as spectacular as the former, but it's still a great game.
Splatoon 2 is fun. You'll love it in spite of the minor blemishes.
If you're entirely new to this experience, I absolutely recommend Teslagrad as a great puzzle platformer. It arrived a bit before the genre became way too crowded, though the two years that have passed since then certainly haven't helped. What we have here is a well made 2D effort, and explorers who aren't tired of the genre will enjoy this one for its silent storytelling and magnetic puzzle mechanics.
2014/15 is a good season for Madden. The defensive play and depth of control in each mode makes this a game that should reward series fans for a long time coming. It's also a good looking effort on the PlayStation 4. Superstar Mode is still a no show in the way it used to be, but the Connected Careers stuff encourages play with friends in a big way. If you have friends that dig Madden, Madden NFL 15 should be a good time. It's not a constant hit, but its success is strong.
Sparklite is an indie roguelite that offers great progression mechanics to a much-loved genre. It has flaws, but fans need not worry.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have a video game to be proud of, even if it's not perfect.
It isn't the completely revolutionary game changer some thought it would be, but it's certainly a huge shot in the arm for the genre.
This is hardly a remaster, but newcomers who want a fresh take on zombie fighting should consider it.
Garden Warfare is fun, and the time I've spent with it so far has been among the best on the Xbox One.
In the current crop of offerings on the PlayStation 4, Killzone: Shadow Fall is one of your best choices.
If you're looking for a slow burn of a plane game, give this one a go.
... Zoo Tycoon is an addictive effort that rides in with just enough content for a good play.
If you're looking for a challenging Nintendo platformer or you got your fill from the Wii U version, you're better off looking elsewhere. This is a solid game that runs well on the 3DS, but its extras don't really warrant a double dip or a purchase from a player looking for difficulty.
Frustration aside, GEM is a solid arcade shooter with a brilliant art design, decent tunes and a nice rhythm to its gameplay.
Be warned, you can find the same game on other platforms for a vastly cheaper price. The same experience moves on mobile for $2.99 and on Steam for $9.99.
I loved Sleeping Dogs the first time around. As a fan, there's not enough in the Definitive Edition to call it "Definitive." It's adequate, and it's overpriced especially given the fact that the exact same game is selling for half the cost on PCs.
Firefall is middling. If you have free time to spare, the fact that it won't cost you anything to try is a huge win. If it manages to sink its teeth into you over the first few hours, you might just be hooked. Personally, I'll pass.
Not too much more frustrating than a puzzle game that has you spam clicking and interacting with every single object in a given space in order to solve its
...the cheap feeling of the effort and downright tiresome nature of moving about makes it hard to recommend Contrast as worth your money.
