Kudos to Frontier Developments for bringing back a classic franchise and trying to realize it’s original vision with the technology to make it happen, but there’s unfortunately not enough here to look at or do. There is just the VR experience at this moment, but I’ve seen better utility of the Oculus Rift for more immersive and realistic experiences than this. The idea is sound, but the overall fun and enjoyment just isn’t quite up to par. Perhaps some TIE fighters and a Death Star is needed or anything else to help make this trip through space a lot less lonely.

5 / 10.0 - Feral Fury

Despite my criticisms, Feral Fury is a largely inoffensive roguelite shooter.

5 / 10.0 - The Low Road

The Low Road seems like it would have been a better short animated film than a video game.

7 / 10.0 - Toki

If you enjoy the old-school nature of Toki and are willing to explore every nook and cranny, then this is a remake very much worth your time

The visual style is certainly unique enough despite how much it may remind some of Playdead’s Limbo. The gameplay is also inspiring when first experiencing it for its mesh of strategy, management, and stealth. It’s just a shame that it gets bogged down by the economy when trying to complete key objectives. The controls are serviceable also but will take some getting used to at first.

5 / 10.0 - Desert Child
Dec 13, 2018

There was a lot of potential in Desert Child, but the slick presentation and amazing soundtrack only seem to mask what ends up being shallow gameplay. Racing feels good at first, but an entire game where that’s the only thing you do gets tiring pretty fast.

My hope for Ackk Studios is that they will take this criticism to heart in their next project. They are clearly bursting with creativity, and we need to see more of that in the gaming industry. Just be sure to back it up with solid mechanics that push the player’s experience forward. Being set in 1999 doesn’t mean we have to suffer through the worst of it.

Pick yourself back up, wipe off that sand, and crack that whip. You won’t regret it.

This just has the distinction of being the only military shooter on the platform. If that’s what you’re looking for, this will keep you entertained in short bursts before you peter out. Otherwise, spend time on something like Doom or Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus instead.

Back in the Groove likely won’t push the franchise beyond its cult status, but it is a good game that fans both old and new should check out. Pick up and play this one with a friend for the best experience.

Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn certainly has a home on the 3DS. Unfortunately, the co-op mode in the Wii version is gone and the “fuzziness” of the visuals here makes it suffer a bit, but it’s still good wholesome fun.

At [its low price point], there is some leeway to be given to Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. It’s extremely fair for what is ultimately a fun, Marvel vs. Capcom-lite clone. There is also future support ensured with more characters and skins.

Like its characters, Masquerada: Songs and Shadows puts on the mask of a good game. The above par voice acting and art style will certainly lead you to believe that.
