Damien Chambers's Reviews

Before I became a Geek Under Grace I was a student of Journalism and have always aspired to write for a gaming and geek culture publication. I am truly blessed to have found an outlet to reach not only thousands of fans, but those who may not have yet found Christ. My favorite genre of games is third-person/sandbox games. I like the freedom that they allow both in gameplay and in scale and they just seem less bland and limited than more linear titles. I still have a soft spot for RPG games but I now enjoy JRPGs far less than I did as a child because they are still basically the exact same as they always were, with a few exceptions of course. I also enjoy playing more tactical third-person multiplayer shooters or first-person shooters that try to shake things up. I absolutely hate games based on WWII or Vietnam as those settings and those types of gameplay have been done to death. Though I am not opposed to a future Assassin's Creed title being set during one of these wars. I also typically tend to stay away from MOBA's as they are notorious for abusive, and generally unsavory online communities. My favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger, which ironically enough is a JRPG but its one that I consider untouchable in quality.
8.7 / 10.0 - Killing Floor 2
Dec 14, 2016

Killing Floor 2 is an excellent addition to the sub-genre it helped pioneer with its predecessor. As far as wave-based, cooperative multiplayer shooters go, Killing Floor 2 is the most addicting and fun one that I have played to date. With a quirky cast of mercenaries, buckets of blood and gore, and a rocking, heavy metal soundtrack, fans of DOOM, Gears of War's Horde mode, and Left 4 Dead will find a lot to love.

8.5 / 10.0 - Dead Rising 4
Dec 24, 2016

Dead Rising 4 is the game the previous three Dead Rising titles should have been. With no time limit to speak of, players are given free reign to play how they want, when they want, as often as they want. This is perhaps the most liberating and accessible Dead Rising yet, and the series is all the better for it. Fans of Dead Rising should not miss this latest installment.

Fans of all things Batman: if you have not yet checked out Batman: The Telltale Series, now is the perfect time to do; it gets better with every episode. Episode 4: Guardian of Gotham shows a Bruce Wayne fighting a war for Gotham on two fronts: the war in his mind and the physical war against the Children of Arkham. Thankfully, Bruce can always rely on his wits to get him out of a jam, because, thanks to newly-aggressive enemies, he can no longer put his full trust behind his tech and gadgets. With less of an opportunity to wear the cape and cowl of The Dark Knight, Bruce is perhaps the most vulnerable he has ever been in this episode. Telltale has humanized Bruce Wayne/Batman, making him seem like less of a super hero and more of an Average Joe, which isn’t a bad thing, as it makes him far more relatable.

Batman: The TellTale Series is a must-buy for any Batman or TellTale Games fan. If players can get through the first two episodes, the final three episodes reflect exactly what is so great about TellTale's writing, character design, and gameplay innovations. If you received Arkham Knight or Return to Arkham over the holidays and you still need to scratch that Batman-gaming itch, then Batman: The TellTale series is the refreshing remedy you need.

9.8 / 10.0 - Horizon Zero Dawn
Mar 15, 2017

Every decade or so, a game comes along that sets a new high bar of achievement in the industry. These games stand the test of time and delight audiences for years to come, even if they never receive the sequel they deserve. Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of these games and it has rightly earned its place among the pantheon of some of the greatest games of all time.

Everything players grew to love about Mass Effect is here but its all the same. Mass Effect: Andromeda doesn't take any risks or go to any serious lengths to differentiate itself from the previous games or stand out among any of the other high-profile releases launched in 2017. Mass Effect: Andromeda is a shining example of how NOT to resurrect a franchise.

Friday the 13th is an absolute blast to play once players are able to find a match that they can stay in. With many different match outcomes and options for victory, I never minded being stuck as one of the counselors (though playing as Jason is still insanely fun). I recommend the game to fans of the infamous horror franchise, and multiplayer games in general as it is a relatively, stress free diversion from some of the other, overly competitive online games out there.

Season 2 of Batman: The Enemy Within is off to a much stronger start than Season 1 and with the twists, turns, and startling revelations that capped off last season's Finale, I cannot wait to see where Telltale takes this series next.

8.4 / 10.0 - Agents of Mayhem
Sep 25, 2017

Fans of Saints Row and Crackdown will find common ground in their love for this game. With all the humor and over the top antics of Saints Row, and the explosive, action, super powered combat of Microsoft's Crackdown franchise, Agents of Mayhem is a rip roaring good time for fans of third person, sandbox shooters.

Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was the the biggest surprise from Nintendo at E3 2017. Seemingly coming out nowhere and combining elements of gameplay that Nintendo hasn't really utilized before Ubisoft Milan and Nintendo came together to create one of Nintendo Switch's best games to date.

Season 2 of Batman: The Enemy Within is off to a much stronger start than season 1, and with the twists, turns, and startling revelations that capped off last season's finale, I cannot wait to see where Telltale takes this series next. Episode 2 turns the dial up to 11 as we see Bruce at his most ruthless as he is forced to infiltrate and take down Gotham's most notorious group of criminals from among their own ranks.

Horizon: Zero Dawn, and its expansion, The Frozen Wilds, is a game that should not be missed. Whether you are a Sony fan, Nintendo fan, or a Microsoft fan, you owe it to yourself to go and buy a PS4 if you don't already have one, and play this game. It is easily worth the cost to experience once of gaming's increasingly scarce masterpieces.

Gamers often speak of how videogames should be viewed as an art form and Detroit: Become Human makes a case for that argument with relevant and topical scenarios. Detroit: Become Human is easily Quantic Dream's best game to date and David Cage's ultimate vision come to life.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is, quite simply, awesome and really scratches that Life is Strange itch leading up the release of Life is Strange 2. Dontnod is really on to something with this series and I hope that they can bottle lightning twice by making LiS2 as good as the first game.

9 / 10.0 - SoulCalibur VI

Soul Calibur has always been unique with its 8-way movement system and is hands-down the best fighter of it's kind. If you're a fan of fighting games at all, then play this game. You won't regret it.

Life is Strange 2, while off to a rocky start, has potential for its future episodes I am interested to see how the events that Sean and Daniel have been through intertwine with the lives of Chris and his abusive, alcoholic father. Ultimately, both stories seem to be leading to one conclusion and it will definitely be an emotional and gut-wrenching journey for all of the main characters going forward.
