Damien Chambers's Reviews

Before I became a Geek Under Grace I was a student of Journalism and have always aspired to write for a gaming and geek culture publication. I am truly blessed to have found an outlet to reach not only thousands of fans, but those who may not have yet found Christ. My favorite genre of games is third-person/sandbox games. I like the freedom that they allow both in gameplay and in scale and they just seem less bland and limited than more linear titles. I still have a soft spot for RPG games but I now enjoy JRPGs far less than I did as a child because they are still basically the exact same as they always were, with a few exceptions of course. I also enjoy playing more tactical third-person multiplayer shooters or first-person shooters that try to shake things up. I absolutely hate games based on WWII or Vietnam as those settings and those types of gameplay have been done to death. Though I am not opposed to a future Assassin's Creed title being set during one of these wars. I also typically tend to stay away from MOBA's as they are notorious for abusive, and generally unsavory online communities. My favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger, which ironically enough is a JRPG but its one that I consider untouchable in quality.

It pains me to say this, but all the color and character in the world—and even the legendary pedigree of developers Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima—cannot save this outdated, uninspired, and just plain boring platformer.

G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout's beautiful animated cutscenes can't make up for the poor gameplay and lack of online multiplayer.

5 / 10.0 - Hellbound
Sep 2, 2020

Hellbound attempts a return to the classic and beloved twitch shooters of the 90's, but falls flat in too many ways to earn a recommendation.

Everything players grew to love about Mass Effect is here but its all the same. Mass Effect: Andromeda doesn't take any risks or go to any serious lengths to differentiate itself from the previous games or stand out among any of the other high-profile releases launched in 2017. Mass Effect: Andromeda is a shining example of how NOT to resurrect a franchise.

6 / 10.0 - Daemon X Machina

Daemon X Machina offers plenty of customization, and fans of mecha anime and games will love its style, but its monotonous mission structure holds the game back and keeps it from truly standing out.

6 / 10.0 - Devil's Hunt
Oct 11, 2019

If you can excuse the low budget afforded to everything outside of the combat, Devil's Hunt is a Hell of a good time, and I would recommend this game to fans its inspirations of Dante's Inferno and Ryse: Son of Rome.

No Man's Sky innovates but not enough for it live up to the monstrous hype it received upon in its initial reveal.

Telltale Games is off to a good start with this new series. However, I do not think that the moments as Batman lend well to the genre.

Champions of Canaan has a lot of new ideas to offer to the Action-RPG genre and is another title to add to a slowly growing list of "good" Christian games. While I had some issues with how the story is told throughout the game and encountered many technical issues during my play sessions I strongly recommend the game to fans of Guardians Of David. Kingdom Games is certainly on to something with this franchise and I cannot wait to see what they do next.

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition will be loved by hardcore RPG fans who enjoy Baldur's Gate and the original Diablo titles. Fans of new RPGs and Diablo 3 will be turned off by an overabundance of menus and UI issues and cumbersome inventory management. However, if players can look past the gameplay flaws there is a great story being told and the characters are all interesting and have their own stories and motivations.

Life Is Strange 2 is an important game solely because of the themes and concepts that it sets out to address across its 5 episodes, but due to its heavy topics and rough choices, it is difficult to play through it again for a different ending.

7.5 / 10.0 - Feather

Become a bird and fly freely around a series of mysterious islands exploring the many caves, valleys, and mountain ranges available. Feather is excellent at creating a peaceful, soothing atmosphere that allows players to kick back and relax after a difficult day with its pretty visuals and calming soundtrack.

Life is Strange 2, while off to a rocky start, has potential for its future episodes I am interested to see how the events that Sean and Daniel have been through intertwine with the lives of Chris and his abusive, alcoholic father. Ultimately, both stories seem to be leading to one conclusion and it will definitely be an emotional and gut-wrenching journey for all of the main characters going forward.

7.5 / 10.0 - The Technomancer
Jun 29, 2016

With a unique cast of characters, shared gear, an emphasis on crafting for gear upgrades, and a deep and complex combat system The Technomancer is a surprising newcomer in a genre that is normally populated with games featuring mages, dragons, castles and the like.

Friday the 13th is an absolute blast to play once players are able to find a match that they can stay in. With many different match outcomes and options for victory, I never minded being stuck as one of the counselors (though playing as Jason is still insanely fun). I recommend the game to fans of the infamous horror franchise, and multiplayer games in general as it is a relatively, stress free diversion from some of the other, overly competitive online games out there.
