Jim Hargreaves's Reviews

Senior Editor at TheSixthAxis with a journalism degree and almost a decade of professional writing experience under the belt. Friendlier than my reviews often portray though admittedly hard to please. Will play just about anything though mainly lean towards online shooters and western RPGs.

Amidst the galavanting and guffawing, King’s Quest has these profound and rather touching moments that can really tug at the heartstrings.

Several hours and a dozen or so mastery ranks later, there’s still so much to do in Sapienza. The more accomplished I become as an assassin, the more options I’m given to experiment with, unlocking new weapons, costumes, and starting locations. When you factor in IO’s ongoing series of live events and community challenges, Hitman’s replay value grows exponentially and will continue to do so when we touch down in Marrakesh later this year.

Hyrule Warriors: Legends may be not be of the same calibre as most Zelda games yet there’s something to be said about way it draws from both the gaming properties it looks to fuse together. Although not entirely successful, it’s an interesting amalgam and one that fans from both camps will now be able to appreciate while on the go.

The Odd Gentlemen have pitched an ambitious curveball and although it's easy to appreciate what they've done when that ball hits its mark, the arc it follows is a confusing one to watch in motion. Although the experiment ultimately pays off, it will have rattled players in the process, but I'm more than confident the series will be steered back on track.

Turf Wars makes good on continuing to flesh out Spider-Man’s story.

If you've yet to buy Samurai Warriors 4, we'd strongly recommend grabbing an earlier version of the game – whether that be the original or Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3. Although 4-II certainly has its perks, it fails to push the series in a new, more innovative direction as a whole. Thankfully, with Samurai Warriors 4 Empires already in the pipeline, it looks as though our favourite historical brawler may very quickly get back on track.

We've seen some bad permutations of the battle royale genre, but this one takes the dog biscuit. Don't Even Think is an opportunistic trainwreck that, while free to play, will leave you feeling emotionally out of pocket.

2 / 10 - Road Rage
Nov 21, 2017

The easily outrun and overly simplistic combat is a major blow that Road Rage never manages to recover from. The basic open world design, ugly visuals, and various bugs become harder to tolerate knowing just how deeply unfulfilling the core gameplay is, even when you factor in the budget price tag.

2 / 10 - Dead Alliance
Sep 6, 2017

While I liked a couple of the ideas behind Dead Alliance, they're not capitalised on to create something truly interesting. What we're left with is a painfully generic, often broken online shooter that's begging to be put in the ground, preferably under ten feet of quick-set cement.

If developer Screaming Villains had gone back and reworked parts of the original game – perhaps adding rewind or “no fail” features – then at least Night Trap would be playable. By today's standards, however, it's a broken, incoherent mess. A relic that, despite being deeply nostalgic, is almost impossible to stomach for those who aren't already zealous fans of the original. Still, for all its flaws, it's a unique piece of video game history and one enthusiasts should definitely look into, even if they don't actually play Night Trap for themselves.

2 / 10 - One Way Trip
Sep 16, 2016

While I struggle to play One Way Trip, I also feel a muffled yet ever present pangs of fascination. This is a rare specimen – an experimental approach to game design the likes of which we’re never likely to see again, at least not on consoles. Its incredibly niche appeal creates a barrier between Beret and a good 99% of those who own a Vita and PlayStation 4 (if not more). Then again, in some bizarre way, that seems completely intentional.

There’s not much else to say – Umbrella Corps is a downright awful dagger in the hearts of Resident Evil fans. We can only hope that, with one final nail in the coffin, Capcom will bury this tragic era and leave it dead forever.

2 / 10 - DayZ
Jun 6, 2019

DayZ has a rich history, a long lineage or war stories and strange survivor tales that have drawn thousands down its rabbit hole, but its reality is very different. There's nothing here but a dull, vacuous wasteland, devoid of character and relying solely on players to make their own fun.

3 / 10 - Taxi Chaos
Feb 23, 2021

No more advanced than Crazy Taxi was back when it debuted all those years ago, and without the same trademark attitude, Taxi Chaos is a real missed opportunity to modernise an arcade favourite.

There are some intriguing ideas at play here. Decent stealth mechanics and a captivating cultist backdrop will reel you in though there just isn't enough substance to make The Church in the Darkness a lasting, worthwhile experience.

3 / 10 - Bravo Team
Mar 6, 2018

Ultimately, Bravo Team adds nothing to the VR shooter scene and it's somewhat baffling to see Sony pushing the game so hard considering how it has turned out. If you were considering paying top dollar for that tempting Aim Controller bundle then don't.

It's a shame how RAID turned out, really. Although it arguably came out of nowhere, it's usually games with little to no initial fanfare that can come swooping in to reenergise a gaming genre – just look at the rampant success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Still, Lion Game Lion shouldn't be disheartened. There's still a chance to turn RAID into something great, but it's going to take a long, long time for that to happen.

3 / 10 - VR Karts
May 24, 2017

Even, if for some reason, you happen to take a liking towards VR Karts, it's not worth £34.99 of anyone's money and exposes the imaginary premium that studios are putting on games simply because it says VR in the title. It's such a sour point to end on, but even if it were priced accordingly, VR Karts rarely peaks above mediocrity.

3 / 10 - 2Dark
Mar 21, 2017

Visually and thematically, 2Dark succeeds in paying homage to its forebears. Everything else, however, is desperately lacking. Alone in the Dark had twenty years in which to rise and fall but Raynal’s latest stab at survival horror barely gets twenty minutes.

The truth is, even if the servers were packed, it wouldn't do much to save this shooter. Developer Bigbox VR has some interesting ideas though these are bogged down by mediocrity at every corner. You may be able to squeeze a few minutes of fun from Smashbox Arena, but beyond that it's an incredibly hard sell.
