It's a slow paced game that can be difficult to watch at times but if you want a strong story and all the feels, then this is the one to turn to. It pushes the boundaries of games as art and it's genuinely the most emotional game I've ever played and I can't recommend it enough. Keep Kleenex nearby.

Another masterpiece from Ron Gilbert. The game is a joy to play and provides the perfect mix of humour, challenge and engaging storyline. I genuinely have nothing but praise for the game and I can’t recommend it enough.

10 / 10.0 - Sonic Mania
Sep 10, 2017

Finally, we have the return to form that Sonic fans have been waiting for all these years. This isn't just one of the best Sonic games of recent years, but one of the best Sonic games full stop. You owe it to yourself to get a copy of this masterpiece.

It's a fine line when creating a sequel to such a classic game. Go too modern and you alienate your classic player base, but go too retro and it doesn't appeal to the new generation of gamers. Taito has got the balance spot on here though, and created a Bubble Bobble for 2019 that feels completely right, but without being mere fanservice. It's a brilliant game that all Switch owners ought to get in my opinion.

Playtonic has absolutely smashed it with Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. It builds on the team's experience with platformers and manages to improve on its predecessor in every way. One of the best platformers I've played in years.

10 / 10.0 - Vampire Survivors

Vampire Survivors is one of the most addictive games I've played since Tetris! Apologies to my partner, who has hardly seen me for a few months now. Just one more game, I promise…

Guybrush's new adventure is every bit as fun as his previous ones. This is a triumph of a game that manages to live up to exorbitant amounts of expectation and ticks every box.

10 / 10.0 - Freedom Planet 2

Freedom Planet 2 takes everything great about the first game, adds a bit of polish and some extra mechanics, and gives us an absolute beast of a game. I cannot praise it enough, it's just brilliant fun!

9.5 / 10.0 - Ratchet & Clank
May 16, 2016

Ratchet and Clank is the culmination of Insomniac's vast experience in the field of platformers. It's not just the best platformer on the PS4, it's one of the best games on the PS4 full-stop. A game of the year contender in my opinion.

I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed Ni no Kuni II. It's one of the best JRPGs in years and it's a must-buy for fans of the genre. It's cute, thoroughly addictive and has more tweaks and statistics than you can shake a sword at. If you enjoyed the first game, you will love this.

Some of the game's mechanics are poorly explained and the difficulty curve can be unforgiving. These can be overlooked when a game is just so well crafted and fun to play as this. A must for all RPG fans but have Google on standby.

9 / 10.0 - Freedom Planet

This is clearly a game that takes its inspiration seriously, and is a lovingly-crafted tribute to a genre of games that a lot of people, are really fond of. No new additions compared to previous releases, but if you haven't already played this then don't hesitate to pick it up on the eStore.

If you like old fashioned platformers that are tough as nails but addictive, then you’ll love this. It’s a 16-bit platformer with modern day polish. A tremendous first effort from a small development team, this game deserves to be a big hit.

The accessibility of Stellar Interface makes it a brilliant induction to the often impenetrable bullet-hell genre, and the variety of different options, combined with addictive gameplay that keeps you coming back, makes it one of my favourite Switch games of 2019 so far.

9 / 10.0 - Nex Machina
Jul 16, 2017

This is a love letter to classic twin-stick shooters. With input from one of the kings of the genre in Eugene Jarvis, there was almost no way this could fail. It's a fast-paced, colourful, and bullet-rich affair that will have you coming back for more again and again.

TL:DR Version - Wolfenstein II does a brilliant job of mixing social commentary with unnecessary violence and a tongue-in-cheek attitude. There's a few optimisation issues and the level design could be a touch better, but this is an overall outstanding game that deserves a look.

This is a charming little interactive story that warms the heart even if it doesn't necessarily challenge the brain. If you like your games to be story driven with characters you'll end up caring about, this is a must-have.

They say that love can build a bridge, but love isn't GlaDOS' style, so you'll have to make do with girders and cables instead. Frustratingly difficult in parts, but a game that you'll keep coming back to until you master it.

9 / 10.0 - Q.U.B.E. 2
Apr 6, 2018

With an increase in scope and improvements in every area, Q.U.B.E. 2 shows that Toxic Games have learnt from their experience and are doing a great job. This is an excellent title that is even better than the great game that it follows on from.

A great little pair of puzzle games here. Nothing new for owners of the iOS and Android versions, but if you don't already have them, this is definitely worth a play.
