James Berich's Reviews

A sucker for atmosphere and world building. An immersive sim romantic.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has been released on the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita already, so it's very possible that most players will be wondering whether or not they should bother with yet another rendition simply because it's on the current generation of console. It's a hard question to answer.

8 / 10 - The Escapists
Feb 18, 2015

The Escapists is an interesting concept and one that works well as a game. The visual style’s colourful and cute nature juxtaposed with the violent and gritty subject matter gives the game a dark comedy vibe not unlike games like Worms and Flockers.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 does a great job at attempting to blend the old style of Resident Evil with the new ones.

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is a pretty worthy follow up to Guardian of Light. It takes the things that made the original game so good, like great puzzles and well thought out attempts to add replayability, and brings them into a new setting and story fully intact.

Just Dance 2015 is a pretty admirable improvement over Just Dance 2014. Ubisoft have done a lot of work in making sure that not only the set list has not only been refreshed but that there’s multiple new modes to attempt, including a great variety of both active and passive multiplayer.

As a huge horror aficionado, it’s great to see that the horror genre is making more of a comeback in recent years.

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition is a solid offering and one of the more unique zombie driven games in what has become an undeniably saturated genre.

8 / 10 - Project Spark
Oct 16, 2014

Project Spark is a product, or experience, or whatever you want to call it that I am not really comfortable giving a numerical score to. It’s a tool that lets you make any kind of game experience whether it be something as simple as a piano keyboard or minesweeper to something more intricately built like a Zelda clone or a stealth action adventure game.

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is one of the most visceral and pure action games on the market, and besides other more landmark action games like Bayonetta, nothing like it has come since.

After all is said and done, it sounds like I’m being extremely rough on Resident Evil Zero but it’s still a pretty competent classic Resident Evil game.

8 / 10 - Injustice 2
May 22, 2017

Injustice 2 is a fighting game that's accessible to anyone, but also deep enough for veteran fighting fans. An incredible step up from Gods Among Us in practically every way possible, it successfully leverages heaps of content and a strong roster with tight and fast fighting mechanics. Gear pushes customization without sacrificing balance, and both Multiverse and Online modes keep Injustice 2 interesting no matter how you play.

What Remains of Edith Finch is an example of an inventive and engaging experience that both aligns with the traditional definition of what a 'game' can be, and yet also seeks to challenge it. The story can be cliché at times, and sometimes the symbolism lacks subtlety, but what's offered here is a perfect blend of bittersweet themes and motifs. It's linear, but it's enjoyable and intriguing enough to demand your attention for its perfect run time.

The Evil Within 2 is an enjoyable, psychological and somewhat emotional trip that I probably won't forget. As a sequel to it's predecessor, it takes things in a rather different direction and tries several new things to mixed results. Nonetheless, The Evil Within 2 is a thrilling and tense experience that'll appeal to most fans of the original and newcomers looking for a harrowing experience they've probably not had before.

There is no denying that Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is a more refined game than its predecessor. That much is certain. With Nightdives efforts, Seeds of Evil plays better than it did twenty years ago. There are some things players will have to overlook – particularly the dated visuals and some samey looking level designs – but Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is still a blast to play.

Kirby Star Allies is a cute and chaotic traditional Kirby game with fantastic buddy AI and strong potential as a co-op experience. It pays fantastic homage to its roots while adding in new mechanics that work well. Unfortunately, the length of the experience will have some doubting whether it's truly worth it, but Kirby Star Allies is one of the most wholesome Switch games you can try right now.

Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered is a modest remaster but a good one. While some other options would've been appreciated to prioritise frame rate over resolution, the game itself still stands up four years on. It's missing some of the bells and whistles that games like Origins have since introduced, but its unique premise and concept means it's an experience most Assassin's Creed fans shouldn't miss.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate builds upon the already comprehensive celebration of the Monster Hunter franchise that was established in the original Generations. There is heaps to do here regardless of whether you've played before, and the sheer volume of content on offer here is staggering. Yes, it's slightly less easy to pick up and play than Monster Hunter World, but what Generations Ultimate lacks in polish and pizazz it makes up for with unbridled depth and longevity.
