94 / 100 - Dark Souls III
Apr 24, 2016

From a series that came out of anonymity, from darkness (pun intended), today Dark Souls is part of a mainstream audience - the result of its excellence only. Throughout the franchise's history there have been many evolutions and some stumbling blocks, but it is safe to say that Dark Souls III has reached the ideal balance and is the most refined product in the Souls series.

The Ringed City DLC fixes the shortage of the previous DLC, presenting much more content, although not everything offered has a satisfactory gameplay. The big highlight are the bosses - challenging and worthy to face that vigorous build you created, after spending considerable time in the Dark Souls III campaign.

The quality of The Disney Afternoon Collection port could be better, so as the suggested price. However, the six games that were chosen for this compilation are excellent, representing the best of their time. It's a collection suitable for kids and, above all, longtime fans.

If the goal with making Dragon Quest spin-offs is part of a bigger plan, in order to make the series more popular in the West and get the audience ready for Dragon Quest IX, then Square Enix has been executing this plan brilliantly. Just like Builders, Heroes II is another high quality project. It is a game that fixes several imperfections from the previous installment, delivering a product much more complete and able to entertain for a longer time.

When talking about gameplay, it's impossible not to compare Little Nightmares to Limbo or Inside. Although similar in that, this platform and horror game from Tarsier Studios delivers an unique atmosphere, inhabited by creatures that cause some discomfort (which is something good in this context, by the way). Its polished design, allied to a functional and intelligent gameplay, make the game an excellent choice to any gamer that might want a macabre and unconventional experience.

85 / 100 - Nex Machina
Jun 26, 2017

Despite the unpleasant visual noise and a few details on the gameplay that could be refined, Nex Machina demonstrates that Housemarque is one of the best at what it does. It's fun and difficult in the same intensity. You will rage, but there is a tremendous sense of achievement after each barrier surpassed, creating a good balance. If you are looking for a game with extreme challenges and unrestrained action, supported by an incredible soundtrack, Nex Machina is a must have in your library.

Fallen Legion is yet another product that brings some good ideas but is poorly executed. The battle system can entertain for a few hours, until repetitiveness wears it off. Decisions about the empire are an interesting gimmick, but it is another mechanic impaired by its simplicity. Without a captivating story and with significant flaws in gameplay, it is an experience unworthy of your commitment.

Flames of Rebellion has a very similar content when compared to Sins of an Empire. Yes, the story told is different and more enjoyable, but both are played in the same way and therefore carry the same flaws. The combat can be fun for a while, but it becomes repetitive due its lack of depth. The choices system also lacks development and fails to immerse the player in the universe of Fenumia. Also, the extensive loading times and the low framerate are very annoying, making the Vita version even more problematic and dull.

86 / 100 - Matterfall
Aug 19, 2017

At this point, it sounds redundant to say that Housemarque has created another excellent Twin Stick shooter. Matterfall is fast, intense and really fun. Even if its limited content prevents it from becoming one of Housemarque's best, it is a must-have for fans of the genre.

Even though it does not provide an innovative experience, The Mummy Demastered demonstrates the right way to redeem a classic formula. It's a fun and formidable adventure/action game, albeit a bit shorter than I'd like.

Cursed Castilla is a refined Ghost'n Goblins, with a fair and appropriated level of challenge. The story is a mere background and little instigates the curiosity. The graphics and soundtrack are simple, replicating the rudimentary elements of its source of inspiration. However, the action and the core of the gameplay are rewarding, and in the end, that's what matters most to a video game.

Secret of Mana's biggest drawback is the changes where it didn't have to, and what needed an update, was preserved. The remake could be more refined and longtime fans probably share the same feeling. It is a Japanese RPG that rescues classic aspects of the genre, but should only contemplate new players without any reference to the original product.

85 / 100 - Owlboy
Apr 9, 2018

The core of Owlboy's adventure is solving puzzles, interspersed with boss fights and occasional breaks to watch the story progression. It is a very competent game as long as the player does not mind a closed and ephemeral experience. It is, above all, a visual delight, made with a formidable pixel art that distinguishes it from the others in the industry.

80 / 100 - Tacoma
May 9, 2018

The Tacoma space station hides a special and enigmatic story, which can be shallow or deep, according to the player's investment. There is limited interactivity, typical of recent adventures, but the great storytelling will not leave the user bored. It is brief, without delays, just as it should be, but perhaps not a satisfying investment for those looking for many hours of entertainment. Tacoma is worth it, especially for the surprises that the final moments of the game reserve.

80 / 100 - Wizard of Legend
May 15, 2018

Although the combat on Wizard of Legend is quite satisfactory, the limited procedural capability hurts the replay factor and part of the experience. Despite the problems, there is a certain impulse that makes us persist and seek small achievements, little by little, even after the most frustrating defeats.

82 / 100 - Moonlighter
May 28, 2018

Moonlighter addresses an untapped side of the genre, allowing the player to take control of a merchant. It is a well-executed project and an interesting theme. It suffers with the simplicity of its mechanics and with the occurrence of bugs, but it deserves to be played by any RPG enthusiast.

Even though the PvP is not pleasant, the Dark Souls campaign is still sublime. It's worth playing again to try new builds and face challenges in other ways, but the difference that sets the remaster experience is playing at 60 frames per second. The greater precision on the controls and the perfect fluidity add a lot to a product that was already excellent, even with the drawbacks of the original version.

Slime-san is a fun platformer with simple mechanics and visuals. The amount of content is staggering. But the more you invest in it, the more tiring it becomes. Still worth checking, especially for its attractive price.

The new Telltale game brings new cases to the universe of the series and presents an interesting narrative. Through an episode starring children, we can see the post-apocalyptic world by a different point of view. Clementine plays a mother role for AJ and her responses influence his behavior, leading to some unexpected situations and sometimes even a sense of guilt. The ending of the first episode impresses and causes a certain curiosity of what is to come.

Even considering the mediocre soundtrack, the return of the Dragon Quest main series on a PlayStation platform could not be more special. The eleventh edition of the franchise is exceptional and complete. Not only the best way to revisit a beloved genre in recent times, Dragon Quest XI is also a fantastic game - perhaps one of the best of 2018.
