Shawn Petraschuk's Reviews

Fearless leader, dashing and debonair Executive Editor, and Co-Founder/Owner of COGconnected. Raised on an NES, came of age on the PS1, turned 'crusty, old grumpy gamer' on the Xbox One and PS4. I play it all from shooters to RPGs all while grumbling about getting owned by 12 year olds. The reflexes just ain't what they used to be ya know?
92 / 100 - Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is the most fun I’ve had platforming in a very long time. The game’s impossible to put down gameplay really does give the Big N and their Mario goodness a quality ‘run for its money’.

72 / 100 - Knack
Nov 18, 2013

No matter how linear or repetitive the levels are you'll still enjoy taking everything in. Knack manages to be magical regardless of its weaknesses and personally I hope the little relic monster gets another chance to shine in a future title.

As a whole you can't go wrong by including Killzone: Shadow Fall as part of your next gen PS4 package. It might be lacking in true next generation gameplay mechanics but it really shines when it comes to the new generation of graphics. Sony and Guerilla Games will surely continue to develop the franchise and I can honestly say without hesitation that the path they're on is the right one.

Need for Speed Rivals is a competent arcade racer that is sure to get the heart rate up with some real 'edge of your seat' cops vs racers action.

The amount of work put into offering next-gen consoles an upgraded Lara Croft makes the Definitive Edition much more than a simple cash grab. One of the pinnacles of last-gen gaming is presented as one of the best looking games on offer for your new console if not one of the best looking games you've ever seen, period. Perhaps not worth the full price tag if you've already played it there is no doubt that if you missed it on round one that it's better than ever now and worth every penny.

As reviewers we're always looking for ways to be critical of a game we play. At times I think it's important to throw that out the window just a little bit and I like to ask myself one simple question; Am I having fun playing this? There is no doubt in my mind that the answer to this question is yes.

It is rich in depth and despite its often cheery exterior it is a top notch third person action fest that many gamers may have written off. Let me be clear that PvZ offers plenty in regards to tactics and skill and in my opinion I've enjoyed this more than any recent CoD or Battlefield game for its refreshing take on what some could argue is becoming a tired genre.

I truly can't say enough good things about inFAMOUS: Second Son. A winning combination of great gameplay, challenging combat, solid acting, gorgeous visuals and more makes it one of the PlayStation 4's absolute must own titles.

90 / 100 - Child of Light
Apr 30, 2014

Between its artistic strengths and its addictive gameplay Child of Light is a fairy tale well worth the price of admission that I wish more studios would take notice of.

The story and acting holds up, even if it's monotonous to plod through, so when you inevitably find this in your local bargain bin it's still worth a play through.

Most likely due to the familiarity of the Second Son world I felt comfortable slipping back into it but the pull that kept me playing the first time around just wasn't there the second time. Despite that, however, the story and character of Abigail 'Fetch' Walker still kept me well invested in the game and made it an enjoyable re-visitation.

88 / 100 - Destiny
Sep 15, 2014

If Destiny is judged on the game itself without falling victim to the unreachable expectations placed on it then it stands out as an amazing new IP. Never before has a game managed to merge separate genres quite so successfully and despite some of its flaws it does a lot of things right. Counting on the post launch support from Bungie to expand the game world and fine tune the experience I'd venture that most players will keep coming back with smiles on their faces for a long time to come.

Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes is certainly a fun way to sit around and play with your kids but I don't see many adults or more mature gamers getting as much out of it unless they really enjoy the creationary aspects of the Toy Box. While the Toy Box might shine as the best experience that the game has to offer it's unfortunately dulled by how disappointing the play sets are in comparison. The fact is that most players will just want to hop in and play rather than build. Those players will ultimately be left wanting after play set boredom sinks in. Still, it is an improvement over 1.0 and it makes me hopeful for what we might see out of the eventual successor in Disney Infinity 3.0.

65 / 100 - Driveclub

If you can look past the dings in the paint job there's a lot of fun to be had with DriveClub but be sure not to go in expecting the new standard in racing games. You'll surely end up disappointed.

I think that Project Spark takes what other games with creation suites such as LittleBigPlanet and Minecraft started and amplifies it to a much higher level.

While the difficulty might not be of the calibre that Dark Souls fans clamor for it will challenge most gamers and is an enjoyable, albeit flawed, dark fantasy RPG romp.

If you're a fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise you will undoubtedly love what Ubisoft has brought to the table with Assassin's Creed Unity. A vibrant playground that you can tackle alone or with friends, it adds just enough new while still staying faithful to what made it successful in the first place. Despite some minor hiccups along the way this is a great first showing for Assassin's Creed exclusively on current generation consoles.
