Poor controls and a bland aesthetic mean that Skeleton Boomerang is a game you won't be returning to any time soon.
If you like the genre, sure, Time Recoil will quench that thirst for more fast paced top down shooting, but at it’s core, Time Recoil is an average game that could have been so much more.
I am still surprised by just how much fun I had with Ben 10. It’s an extremely simple brawler, but it nails the game play elements to a tee. It leaves a lot to be desired for in the production values areas, but a younger audience may not be able to pick up on those flaws. If you have a younger sibling, or a child of your own who enjoys watching the Ben 10 TV show, then I honestly see them loving this game. If they follow the story themselves, they’ll definitely get a kick out of playing all these weird and wacky ailens here. The older audience may still get a kick out of it too, if you are looking for something a little simpler, and something you can just load up for an hour or two allowing you to zen out for a bit, then Ben 10 will have you set, my friend.
AereA missed the mark. This game was simply not enjoyable and after this review I do not see myself going back to play more. I made sure to play all 4 characters in an effort to see if it got better, however I was let down. Movement, Combat, and level progression are not interesting in the least. Boss fights feel like choirs rather than fun encounters. To wrap it all up the look and feel of the game is boring and drab, lacking the uniqueness to have it stand out amongst the other Action RPG’s on the market. If you are interesting in an Action RPG to buy your time, look somewhere else; AereA is not that game.
Unfortunately, my first experience with a Sonic game isn’t one I am hoping to remember for years to come, in fact Sonic Forces is a very bland and forgettable game. The lacklustre 3D platforming, and boring boss fights condemn Sonic Forces to a bargain bin level of release.
10 Second Ninja X is an improved version over the original game in every way. You won’t really miss much skipping the first game, $10.99 for a game of this quality and amount of content is easily a fair price to pay. It definitely will only appeal to a certain audience so I would advise people try out the demo before you make the plunge in purchasing the full game.
The three hours I had playing AER were fun, but I won’t have any everlasting memories of this game, and neither will I probably remember what even happened a few days from now. A forgettable experience that had plenty of opportunities to be more.
Whilst this episode does expand on the story, and open some interesting future plot lines, it is definitely a filler episode for the most part. It is leading up to a much more in depth episode 3, and judging by the cliff hanger at the end of this episode, things are really about to heat up a bit too.
The story and banter between characters are Deadbeat Hero’s major strong points, but the annoying gating mechanics on show for slowing down progression and forcing replaying previous levels halted my enjoyment for the game, and to top it off, I didn’t really enjoy looking at the game either. An interesting story that has been let down by some poor choices on the mechanic front.
The pleasing art style and relaxing soundtrack certainly pull back some points for Terroir, but ultimately unless you are an absolute wine enthusiast wanting to get a taste for running your own vineyard, you may just want to check out Game Dev Tycoon.
Tokyo 42 was a hugely enjoyable title. Whilst it may not be the longest game in the world, it did grip from beginning to end. The fast paced action orientated gameplay puts Tokyo 42 near the top of the pile in the twin-stick shooter genre. The lackluster story and sound department are the only things preventing it from being one of the best indie games to come out this year.
Ghost Recon: Wildlands is sadly for me a huge disappointment for me because of what it truly could have been. I think the game would have fared much better had they made it multiplayer-only, but then it might run the risk of turning into a scenario like Evolve and end up being closed 18 months after release. It would still have made the gameplay as a whole much more enjoyable. Maybe if they didn’t match you with people much further in the game than you are, I would have opened up my game to multiplayer more, but I don’t like being pulled from pillar to post when following a linear story.
Has Been Heroes has a unique game play mechanic, but fell short on explaining it properly for new players to the game. I really would have enjoyed the game much more had the system been explained properly. It would have saved me a couple of hours just fumbling around the game’s UI and online resources, and actually just had me enjoy the game from the start. With bland environments, but a rather pleasant aesthetic, Has Been Heroes is an above average game that will keep your attention for a few hours. Even though it has plenty of heroes for you to unlock, I’m not sure I could keep playing for longer than ten hours as I think the repetitive nature would be to much to handle. I would say wait for a sale on this one, as $19.99 might be a little too steep for my liking.
Snake Pass is a beautiful 3D puzzle platformer, and whilst it does have it’s flaws in the control and camera system, it’s still a pleasant experience even for a platforming vet. Each level will sufficiently challenge anyone, and with an increasing difficulty curve level on level, even the most seasoned platformer will find the game challenging. Priced at $19.99 on Steam, it may be worth waiting for the sale season to start simply down to the lack of replayability and short initial playthrough length.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm: Episode 1 has got off to a little bit of a stuttering start for me. I was very disappointed by the art style of choice, but the story that is unfolding will certainly be the most impactful feature of the game, much like the first. If the franchise is something you are in love with, then it will be a no brainer as I can’t really see them messing up the story.
I’m not going to say Undertale is a must play game like most people. Yes I can see why people see it as being earth shatteringly good, but I really don’t see what all the fuss is about. The gameplay is slow paced and bland and graphically it is just awful. What you are getting with Undertale is a fantastic soundtrack, and hugely original plot. I can quite happily say I could have got the same experience out of Undertale from just watching a play through online. Credit where credit is due though, the story is really good and it is probably Undertale’s biggest selling point. The game has a good price point so even if you are on the fence, it’s not like you are going to break the bank with trying it out.
If you have a headset already, the low price of Attack of the Bugs will make it easily obtainable, and introduced me to the genre perfectly. With a good mix of different mechanics on show, and an easy to pick up gameplay premise, I really can’t recommend Attack of the Bugs enough.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm - Episode 2: Brave New World, has certainly picked up the season for me, and elevating it on par with the original season. I must now patiently wait for the next episode!
Enemy Within’s first episode has done a great job at drawing me into the series, and it has left me wanting more straight away. The emotional attachment that grew from the roots of the first game has definitely helped, but we cannot wait to jump into Episode 2 right away!
For the price of a Starbucks coffee, you are getting an interesting story which may tug on your heart strings, the nostalgia hit is strong from the aesthetic of the MSN window, and multiple endings make replayability a factor too. I would still suggest you try out the first game before purchasing the sequel, just to see if you like the format, and if you do, then you’ll be set up for nicely for the second game.
