Simply put, The Outer Worlds is an outstanding space adventure. Obsidian has done an exceptional job of incorporating the system's found in their other highly acclaimed project, Fallout: New Vegas, and using them in a brand new venture. With only a tiny amount of issues to plague the experience, The Outer Worlds excels at in every other aspect. Taking players on a trip where corporations rule everything and you decide the fate of thousands of people.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla takes you on a bloody Norse-filled adventure full of death, gloom, and glory in hopes of finally reaching Odin's hall.
The interface and difficulty are intimidating at first but Darkest Dungeon provides a deep foreboding atmosphere complemented by the intense challenge that will test even the most seasoned gamer.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a distinct and complex fighter that not only adheres to Dragon Ball and fighting game competitors but those seeking an intense action-filled adventure.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War focuses on what made the first game a hit, improved on those strengths, and attempted to fix problems players had with the first game. The refined Nemesis system kept me on my toes since at any time the story could shift based on my actions or a new powerful Uruks could appear and completely decimate me.
Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition is the ultimate Final Fantasy XV experience. It gives those who played the original game more than enough content to return for a second playthrough.
I had low expectations for VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. I anticipated a bartending simulator with a simple narrative but I was mistaken. Yes, you're a bartender and the game is a narrative-driven title but the deep and complex characters along with the well-crafted cyberpunk universe provide a soothing yet exciting environment. Each character has their own personalities whether it's an editor looking to kill time or a working man trying to find meaning in life. VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action excels at providing an invigorating adventure full of interesting characters while elaborating on its own cyberpunk world.
Owlboy is a marvelous action-adventure that successfully combines gameplay and story for one memorable adventure that’s worth playing multiple times.
Spyro the Dragon was one of the most acclaimed franchises for the original PlayStation. Spyro Reignited Trilogy brings back the iconic purple dragon, allowing modern and veteran gamers to experience some of the best platformers with a modern touch. The updated visuals give Spyro a much-needed update similar to Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy but like that title, the core mechanics are still as strong as ever. Spyro Reignited Trilogy provides the best adventures from Insomniac Games' creation and shows why Spyro is so beloved.
Sonic Mania or have yet to play it, Sonic Mania Plus delivers more of the same great gameplay the original game provided.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings new characters, stages, and everything that was included in past entries into one package. Thanks to an easily accessible control scheme and so many popular characters to choose from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the most friendly games to pick and play while also delivering a deeply competitive experience that rivals some of the best fighting games. The online matchmaking suffers from connectivity issues but it's hard to play the title without getting sucked in. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate doesn't only uphold the expectations of this franchise, it smashes them.
Octopath Traveler uses 2D sprites and low-resolution 3D models to create an RPG that faithfully combines retro and modern aspects in many ways. The graphics create a distinctive atmosphere that is complemented by artistic touches that bring every town, character, and enemy to life. Extravagantly drawn captures the essence of old-school RPGs such as Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, and Earthbound while providing its own unique identity. Octopath Traveler hits you with its charming graphics and beautiful art style before sucking you in with its densely packed adventure that truly captures the essence of a great JRPG.
Devil May Cry 5 delivers exactly what is expected from this franchise since it debuted back 2001, with over the top action and ridiculous boss fights. This latest installment doesn't diverge from the series' formula and instead builds or slightly modify the mechanics that series veterans know and love while also giving newcomers some easier options. Devil May Cry 5 is a rocking good time that will keep everyone coming back for another round of demon hunting.
The Mario & Luigi series has seen incredible popularity since its debut with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is regarded as one of the best in the series. It brought back Bowser as a playing character and teaming him up, unknowingly, with Mario & Luigi; something that hasn't been done since Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Like the remake of Superstar Saga Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey brings back the original game with updated visuals, new content, and changes to the original game that makes it more accessible. For those who missed out on this gem of an RPG now is your chance to experience this outstanding adventure and if you did there's plenty of reasons to journey again with Mario, Luigi, and Bowser again.
Marvel's Spider-Man is widely considered one of the best superhero games ever made, rivaling that of Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum. The recent finale for The City that Never Sleeps campaign released this week, marking the end for the title. Not only does this campaign extend the previous adventure but bridges the story in the expected sequel. Spider-Man must take on new challenges as incarceration of Wilson Fisk leads to a power vacuum and then an all-out gang war that sees the return of old allies, new frenemies, and a villain with a lot to prove. The City that Never Sleeps shares many of the qualities of the original campaign with hours of extensive Spider-Man action but also has its faults.
In the world of Control, the supernatural is very real and the government knows about it. In this Metroidvania style adventure, you must prevent a global disaster after having being placed in a precarious situation. Taking on the role of Director of the Federal Bureau of Control protagonist Jesse Faden must slowly claw her way through hostile forces, gain new powers, and attempt to stop the supernatural force called the Hiss. Despite some issues, such as audio errors and bullet sponge enemies, Control constantly entices the player with new discoveries. It carries the same tones found in other Remedy Entertainment games while establishing its own identity as a great new IP.
Astral Chain constantly moves forward and builds momentum for an explosive end. As part of an elite law enforcement unit known as Neuron, it's your job to fight the most deadly monsters humanity has ever encountered with tools only a handful of people have access to. Without a doubt, Astral Chain is one of PlatinumGames best work and one of the top exclusives for the Nintendo Switch. An outstanding story that constantly ramps up with bigger and more dangerous threat with a constant stream of new and deadly enemies within a beautifully decorated world. It's only when the developers attempt to go outside those strong mechanics and try something different that Astral Chain fumbles.
Monster Hunter World brought the cult franchise to a larger audience. Maintaining the same harsh difficulty of the core games but ensuring that newcomers can also learn the complicated planning that goes into hunting these beasts. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is more of what you would expect from the franchise but with a new icy land to explore. Providing over 40 overs worth of content and even more free post-launch monsters in the future. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne could easily be mistaken as a sequel and once the game hooks you with obtaining its enticing gear it'll be hard to stop playing.
The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series skyrocketed Telltales Games into one of the most beloved game development studios. The studio would eventually close due to mismanagement but thanks to Skybound, the series would reach its end. With The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Edition telling Clementine's entire story from her early childhood days meeting Lee to becoming a mother and guardian to an orphan child. The package also contains the season 2's prequel, 400 Days, and the spinoff series The Walking Dead: Michonne, but Clementine's journey is the star of this package. A journey full of difficult decisions and emotionally traumatizing moments that will mold Clementine into either a harden or empathetic survivor. If you missed out on The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series now is your chance to experience this acclaimed franchise in one place.
Indivisible has taken years to finally release and it was well worth the wait. The incredible graphics, amazing characters, and terrific gameplay combine for an excellent adventure. Ajna's journey from village girl to humanity's savior is a gripping tale full of character-defining moments and outstanding boss fights. It does lack the in-depth customization that RPG fans enjoy and the upgrade system is shallow as well. But these shortcomings rarely hamper what is one of the best games of 2019. Indivisible delights and challenges the player with a beautiful journey that will keep you hooked to the very end.
