4.9 / 10.0 - XEL
Jul 29, 2022

XEL looks great on the surface, but unfortunately it has too many bugs and technical issues to warrant recommending it to anyone. The framerate drops and slow-loading zone transitions alone can cause some frustrations, but add in an uncontrollable camera that is overly distant from the action, difficult to detect enemies, and terrain that is easy to get stuck to - forcing you to reload from your last save point, and you have a game that is near unplayable in its current state. Patches may resolve these issues, but as of right now XEL is too frustrating to fully enjoy.

One Piece: Romance Dawn has some potential, but the long drawn out cut-scenes and lack of difficulty in the combat drags it down.  Every level feels like it’s five to ten minutes of wandering around and fighting, then the same amount of time with the cut-scenes.  Unless you’re a huge One Piece fan, you might want to think twice before picking this one up.  It’s not terrible, but it definitely has its flaws.

6.5 / 10.0 - Curved Space
Jul 18, 2021

Curved Space isn't quite what I thought it would be when it comes to twin-stick shooters, but that's not saying it's bad by any means. The concepts are interesting, flying around and shooting down enemies while on planets that can loop themselves inside-out. However the boss fights can be downright tedious and it's not fun getting bounced around all over the place when getting shot and hit by enemies. The Survival Mode is where I spent most of my time as it felt the closest to a twin-stick arcade-like experience. If you like space shooters you might want to give Curved Space a shot. But for those wanting a more traditional twin-stick shooter experience, you might be a bit disappointed.

The game isn't bad by any means, but it feels like more could have been done to enhance the multiplayer experience and to just add some replayability.

The Prometheus Secret Noohra is an interesting mix of ideas and concepts, but it kind of falls flat a bit.

6.5 / 10.0 - Ninja Shodown
Dec 20, 2017

Ninja Shodown is one of those games where the Multiplayer shines more than the single player experience.  That's not to say the game isn't fun alone; it is, but there's more mayhem to be had in multiplayer, especially Versus Mode.  It's hard to recommend for $15 if you don't plan to play with friends, especially with no online play, but if you have some friends who want to kick up some ninja-style mayhem, you'll want to check it out.

6.5 / 10.0 - Roving Rogue
Aug 10, 2015

Roving Rogue is okay, but I got bored after awhile.  Once you learn how teleportation works, there's not a lot of challenge, as any enemies introduced as the game progresses are easy to either defeat or avoid entirely.  If it ever goes on sale in the eShop I'd say give it a shot, but if you're looking for a challenge, you'll want to look elsewhere.

Wildcat Gun Machine is an interesting take on roguelike and bullet hell games, but the roguelike aspects feel a bit lacking, especially the story. The game looks and sounds great, but a lot of the time I kind of felt like I was just going room to room, fighting enemies, and then going back to the checkpoint, which mitigates a bit of the challenge. Still, Wildcat Gun Machine is enjoyable, but if you're specifically looking for a roguelike game to keep you busy, you might find things a bit lacking here.

7 / 10.0 - Tasomachi
May 10, 2021

Tasomachi: Behind the Twilight is nice and relaxing-and that's about it. While the game is nice to look at and listen to, there's very little challenge and, for a collect-a-thon, I can see where that can turn some people off. If you don't mind a simple game then the budget price tag might not seem too high. But if you're looking for a challenge, you definitely won't find it here.

Sword of the Necromancer is by no means a perfect game, but it's still enjoyable with a few issues here and there. Tama never feels like she's getting stronger and the monsters you summon are hit and miss as to whether they'll actually be effective in a fight or just randomly run around the room going nowhere near where you want them to. The bosses are also hit and miss when it comes to those that require strategy and those that just have you run away for a bit before getting in one or two hits and repeating. However, the story is great and well voice-acted and the soundtrack has a lot of nice tracks to listen to.

7 / 10.0 - Golden Force
Feb 8, 2021

Golden Force harkens back to the days of difficult Super NES-era games, but the difficulty at times doesn't feel natural. Between some enemies occasionally spawning nearly right in front of you, the occasional dropping framerate with numerous enemies on the screen, and the issues with the camera when moving downwards, coupled with long boss fights–including right at the start–the game can be a bit too difficult for some players and turn them off altogether. Buying things in the shop helps a bit. But as expensive as they are you won't be buying too many in each world without grinding out coins. Overall it's not a bad game, but the difficulty seems a bit high. And with the game as short as it is, you're either going to have issues with its difficulty, or complete the game rather quickly.

Demolish and Build is enjoyable once you get a ways into it, but the early going can get pretty repetitive once you've gutted your second saloon and third gas station. Overall, though, it has a bit of a charm to it as you try to improve your company's rank and expand your business.

Warlocks 2: Godslayers is enjoyable for the most part, but the difficult and tedious combat can take the fun out of the game for some people.  The game is definitely geared for multiplayer as the combat can be overwhelming during solo play.  Beyond that there are a few minor performance hiccups though it doesn't normally affect any major gameplay.  If you can get past that and the difficult-at-times combat, you'll find an enjoyable and humorous game with some interesting gameplay mechanics and even more interesting writing.

7 / 10.0 - Double Cross

Double Cross is a pretty good platformer with an interesting story and stage mechanics, but the game itself feels a tad too easy and short.

Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker has both its good and bad moments.  Unfortunately a lot of the bad moments for me was with the combat and constantly getting knocked down with barely anytime to defend myself when getting back up before the onslaught continued, but a lot of that I'm willing to chalk up to my own lack of skill.  Still, the VR Missions are enjoyable once you learn the nuances of combat, but don't expect to see me floating around the online lobbies any time soon.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is a great way to check out Mega Man's later outings, but the presentation just seems a bit lackluster between the challenges not being as interesting as the original game or the puzzling omission of Rockman & Forte/Mega Man & Bass.  The museum and music box modes are still good and it's nice to still practice against the various robot masters.  What we did get is still pretty good, but not quite as good as the original Legacy Collection.

Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure doesn't offer too many improvements outside of the Miracle Cures and graphical updates, but that's kind of expected with certain puzzle games.  The game still provides a solid Dr. Mario experience with the Dr. Luigi and Virus Buster game modes thrown in and the addition of the Miracle Cures shakes things up a bit, both online and off, but the lack of an overall high score for your game session seems like a step backwards for a standard puzzle game.  While not perfect, if you're looking for some Dr. Mario on the go, Miracle Cure is still worth a shot.

Might & Magic Heroes VII is an okay game overall, but seems like it's more for existing fans of the series and doesn't cater to new comers at all.  With no tutorial whatsoever it took me a good hour or so just to get started.  Outside of that the difficulty can be adjusted, but the ability to auto-play battles makes things a tad easier than expected.  This one is definitely not for newcomers to the series unless you don't mind fumbling around on your own for a bit while you get your bearings.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games isn't all that bad, but it's not great either.  The controls for a lot of the events are iffy at best, but there are events that are still enjoyable, especially the Dream Events.  This is one where I'd check out the demo or rent it first to see if you like it before plunking down $50 for it.

7 / 10.0 - Cloudbuilt
Apr 30, 2014

Cloudbuilt is in no way a bad game, but it does have its flaws; the worst of which are the controls and difficulty curve.  If you can get past those, though, you'll find a fairly decent and fun game in a genre that doesn't see a lot of entries. If speed running is your thing, definitely give this one a shot.
