4 / 10.0 - Mosaic
Jan 28, 2020

Adventure titles that offer deep storytelling are some of my favorite experiences in the genre, and Mosaic had everything lined up to be truly special. Unfortunately, a little bit too much monotony, a control scheme you will be fighting throughout, and major performance issues make this a game that will have you looking for a way to alleviate your frustrations. Hopefully a patch comes to fix the performance issues in what could have been a fairly decent experience.

Ravenbound mixes some great ideas and beautiful scenery to intrigue the player, but fails to come through on many of the promises made.

4 / 10.0 - Deep Space Rush
Nov 8, 2019

Deep Space Rush is a rough example of something lots of other titles do much better. Monotonous runs and a gameplay loop seriously lacking in fun-factor make the dearth of depth and variety even more apparent.

In terms of what is on offer for a veteran gamer or someone who is familiar with the franchise, you will find this is a lacking option with not a lot of change, variation, or improvements. Motion control issues hamper the experience for anyone going for full completion, and the rest of what you see will remind you of one of the Wii-era titles in the series straight from 2007. As a family game, Cooking Mama: Cookstar offers a serviceable experience for your children for an evening.

4.5 / 10.0 - The Mims Beginning
Nov 25, 2019

The Mims Beginning offers a humorous take on the god-like genre through Minions-esque characters, but a shallow story, rough graphics and performance, and basic strategy gameplay drag this title down through the depths of space.

5 / 10.0 - Rip Them Off
Mar 25, 2021

Even though the aesthetic, soundtrack, and intelligent dialogue create a package that looks outstanding, Rip Them Off fails to come together in its puzzle gameplay. While utilizing trial-and-error can have its merits, Rip Them Off's method of having the player learn a mathematic language that it then changes constantly just doesn't make for a fun gameplay loop. Lacking hard solutions and ramping up difficulty before you've been properly taught makes Rip Them Off a puzzle title that is hard to recommend.

5 / 10.0 - Boot Hill Heroes
Dec 23, 2020

Boot Hill Heroes, though an honorable attempt to make a retro RPG in the rarely-used Wild West setting, fails to hold up to modern standards. It also isn't a close enough homage to let those misgivings slide. A fine combat system and an on-point soundtrack aren't enough to get past the bland gameplay, trope-filled story, and old-school jank.

Best Friend Forever offers a fairly generic visual novel, with the only hook being one that fails to do anything truly interesting. The management mechanics are the lightest, most fleeting portions of the game, where you're bogged down with a rough control scheme that is quite frustrating. Even with the positives in inclusivity, too many shortcomings make this feel like it was built to be vanilla and given the toppings way later on.

5 / 10.0 - Metamorphosis
Aug 19, 2020

Metamorphosis is a love letter to Franz Kafka, that, unfortunately, is in pretty rough shape on the Nintendo Switch. The stuttering, texture pop-in, and hard crashes overshadow an experience that could otherwise be described as generally enjoyable. Witty dialogue, challenging platforming, and the incredible sights to see from this pint-sized perspective would make it worth the issues in performance if it weren't also for the bland adventuring and jittery controls.

Featuring Cary Elwes of The Prince Bride fame, and following a script that truly puts the snark in Resnarkled, The Bard's Tale could talk its way out of any confrontation. Sadly, sub-par, boring combat, and a restrictive summoning system mean you'll be rolling ability checks with a negative modifier. If only The Bard's Tale was more proficient—should've chosen a wizard or a rogue.

Boot Hill Bounties would be considered a serviceable JRPG without the bugs. The visual glitches are just out-of-place, but the progress-ending bug in the opening tutorial had me worried every time I would open a menu or click through dialogue that my playthrough would be ended prematurely. Given that the story, systems, and mechanics are so familiar, it's a shame Boot Hill Bounties does nothing to make its versions unique or exciting outside of the trope-filled, spaghetti-western theme.

Curious Expedition is a unique experience that fails to live up to its inspirations. Lacking storytelling through areas that could have offered so much was seriously disappointing, as the gameplay loop offers mostly basic management and decision making that doesn't keep you hooked. Repeated playthroughs are hindered by this as well, leaving this one feeling shallow and uninteresting.

5 / 10.0 - Thoth
Jan 8, 2020

All in all, this is a game that is trying to set itself apart from the classic conventions of the genres it is placed in, and while it is an interesting experience, I think it follows too many of those old-school mechanics that were made to eat up your coins, not give you a pleasant time.

Munchkin: Quacked Quest is a disappointing experience for anyone who has spent hours with the original card game. There is a bit more staying power for those simply looking for a decent couch co-op game to play with friends over the weekend, but the monotonous gameplay will bore the group rather quickly. If you were hoping this would be the transcendent Munchkin video game experience, I am sad to report that you have something here more closely resembling Mario Party mini-games.

5 / 10.0 - Mato Anomalies

5 / 10.0 - Witch & Hero 2
Jan 31, 2020

Witch & Hero 2 has a great formula. Simplicity throughout, understandable mechanics, and a quick, in-and-out gameplay loop. However, the title lacks in nearly every department across the board, with some mechanics standing at odds with one another, and gameplay that doesn't hold up long-term.

5 / 10.0 - Riverbond
Dec 26, 2019

Riverbond coaxes you in with its charming feel and aesthetically pleasing voxel graphics, only to thrust you into a monotonous hack 'n' slash. With the plethora of other games that have interesting art styles and incredible looks, it is hard to let the gameplay here slide, even with its comedic relief and destructible environments as a backer.

5 / 10.0 - Space Pioneer
Dec 9, 2019

Space Pioneer offers an addictive arcade experience that feels incomplete. Although the upgrade system is surprisingly deep, the rest of the game suffers from being too shallow to set itself apart from the pack. As far as isometric, twin-stick shooters go, this one is just okay.
