8.4 / 10.0 - Sunset Overdrive
Oct 27, 2014

Sunset Overdrive hit all of my sweet spots, delivering a hilarious campaign filled with a crazy arsenal of weapons, intense action, interesting enemies, beautiful graphics, and a fun multiplayer component. If you loved Insomniac Game's Ratchet & Clank series and are looking for a game infused with the same degree of personality, creativity and style, then Sunset Overdrive will surely fit the bill.

Based on my experiences with the four Halo campaigns, it's clear that Microsoft and 343 Industries have set the new bar for remake collections. They could have easily just packaged Halo 2: Anniversary as a stand-alone title, exactly like they did with Halo: CE Anniversary on Xbox 360, and it would have been justifiable to recommend. Add in three more full Halo games, all with graphical and framerate enhancements, and The Master Chief Collection is very easy to recommend.

5.3 / 10.0 - Escape Dead Island
Nov 24, 2014

After beating Escape Dead Island, I'm still not sure what the game was trying to do. It stripped out the parts of the Dead Island franchise that were fun and didn't present anything good to replace them. The combat was frustrating, and only made me wish the stealth actually worked. Cliff's hallucinations were the only interesting thing about him or the story, and that doesn't say much.

The Saints Row IV Re-Elected + Gat out of Hell combo pack is well-suited for anyone who missed out on Saints Row IV when it released 18 months ago on last-gen platforms. If you've already played through that game, unless you're dying to play through a slightly enhanced edition, your best option is to pick-up the standalone version of Gat out of Hell, also available now.

7.5 / 10.0 - ScreamRide
Mar 24, 2015

At less than $40 to buy, ScreamRide offers a lot of excitement for its comparatively low price. You can ride, destroy, and create dream roller coasters, effectively giving you three games in one. When you add in a steady stream of user-generated content into the mix, ScreamRide is value proposition is very tempting.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a spectacular Metrovania-style platforming game that pays homage to its genre and elevates it at the same time. Everything about this game is top-notch, from the moving narrative, to the exceptional controls, to the gorgeous graphics. As Moon Studios' debut game, they've knocked it out of the park.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is simultaneously the swan song for Wii U, and the greatest possible beginning for Nintendo Switch. The experience is so phenomenal, it deserves to be in the conversation about the best Zelda game of all-time, if not the best games of all-time. When I say Breath of the Wild is a must-play title, it's not hyperbole, you simply must play this game.

6 / 10.0 - 1-2-Switch
Mar 23, 2017

1-2-Switch serves as a nice tech demo to familiarize yourself with the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con controllers. It's a unique experience, the type only Nintendo can provide. Unfortunately, though, the redundancy of the minigames means you'll likely have fun for only a few hours, and then move on to more engaging games.

There was a lot riding on the shoulders of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and it hasn't let us down. It's the definitive Super Smash Bros. game and the best fighting game of 2018. It's impressive on all accounts, from the detailed graphics, to the massive roster, to the in-depth World of Light story mode.

Being the first, and likely only Devil May Cry game of this console generation, Capcom has really stepped up and delivered for their fans. What's not to love? Devil May Cry 5 offers an excellent story with three very interesting protagonists, matched by superb gameplay delivering extreme style. Top it off with an awesome metal soundtrack, detailed graphics, and lots of modes to extend replay and you have the total package.

There's a lot to love about New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The graphics are bold and beautiful, the story is light and whimsical. The game provides plenty of challenge, yet is still approachable for younger gamers thanks to the new characters Nabbit and Toadette.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice cleverly evolves the Souls formula in a compelling and refreshing direction. Feudal Japan is an era ripe with opportunity and FromSoftware made the most of it with beautiful vistas, elaborate castles, and mesmerizing enemies—both era-appropriate and mythical creatures. Sekiro is slightly easier than your typical Soulsbourne game, but the challenge is still very stiff and requires careful precision timing. Plus, there's a secret method to increase the difficulty if you're a glutton for punishment. While the name FromSoftware comes with a lot of expectations, Sekiro stands on its own as one of the developer's best efforts yet.

Yoshi's Crafted World is a blast to play and it's easily one of the best Yoshi games yet. It's even better played locally with friends or family, if you have other gamers in the house or neighbourhood. The wonderful, handcrafted visuals are a real treat on the eyes, and it's just as fun playing levels on the reverse "flip-side". Toss in a huge number of collectibles and 180+ costumes and you've got extremely high replay value.

88% - Days Gone
Apr 30, 2019

Days Gone is glorious. It took some time for the story to find its groove, but once it did, I was hooked. Deacon is a deep, interesting protagonist that's far more nuanced than he initially appears. The Oregon setting is visually breathtaking, heightened by the dynamic weather system that significantly adds to the moment-to-moment feeling. Encountering hundreds of Freakers roaming in a horde is intense, and battling them is an adrenaline rush unlike any I've experienced before. The map is huge, too, offering a minimum of 50 hours of gameplay, and likely much more if you're a completionist. After completing the game, I immediately hoped for a sequel, and if that's not a glowing endorsement I don't know what is.
