7.5 / 10.0 - Boomerang X
Jul 16, 2021

Boomerang X is certainly a unique game. Fans of FPS and arena shooters looking for something different are sure to feel right at home, and the title's arcade feel makes it a good choice for unpretentious fun times. The gameplay here is the high point, and with a little practice it is possible to do cinematic moves. However, even with all the quality of the concept, there is no way to turn a blind eye to the amount of content present here, as well as to the fact that there is an untouched and unrealized potential in practically every corner of this creation.

7.5 / 10.0 - The Survivalists
Oct 28, 2020

The Survivalists has its merits. The adventure has good ideas and manages to provide good moments (especially in multiplayer), but veteran players will soon realize that there is a lack of content after a few hours, and the absence of a more robust challenge unfortunately can also result in a tranquility that dangerously borders on monotony. The base built here is solid, and I hope that the developers keep the promises established by the roadmap and deliver new content in the future.

Megadimension Neptunia VII knows its own audience and wants to please it. It is a pity, therefore, that in the course of this process experience in general is impaired. Disregarding the technical problems of porting it to Switch and the sometimes unnecessary layers of fan service, there is a fun JRPG with a lot of content which, although not belonging to the big echelon of the genre, can surprise enthusiasts.

El Shaddai ASCENSION OF THE METATRON HD Remaster updates to HD one of the most peculiar titles from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Though the title inspired by Enoch's book isn't immune to occasional performance issues on Switch, this is an excellent reminder that experimentation and establishing connections to art should be more valued in the game industry instead of being left only to indie works. Overall, if you'd like to relive this adventure or to know it personally, Nintendo's console is indeed a good way to do it. It's just better, due to the aging marks, to adjust expectations.

Recently out of Early Access, Oblivion Override mixes robots, action, and a lot of speed in an excellent roguelike. By respecting its influences and understanding what makes them special, the debut work of studio Humble Mill sticks the landing and deserves recognition by fans of the genre. Be it on the third or the 20th match, there's certainly more than a single reason to don the armor and return to Crimson's mission.

With the abundance of quality metroidvanias currently available on Switch, standing out is no easy task. Nevertheless, with great visuals and animations, fun combat and a simple but intriguing narrative, 9 Years of Shadows fulfills its mission and delivers an adventure that deserves to be experienced. Its linearity and short duration may disappoint some players, but it's undeniable that the mix of color, musicality and action works well here — and, given the competent adaptation and its inherent versatility, Nintendo's hybrid console is the best way to experience it.

Despite the specific observations above, Astlibra Revision is, in my opinion, one of the big recent surprises. Few times have I seen a similar game; each new chapter makes it clear that this is a passionate developer's life's work. Be it for the plot development, the excellent combat system or the surprisingly moving soundtrack, this is a title that must be experienced, especially for fans of the genre. A slip-up or two isn't enough to destroy the value of this diamond that, despite its imperfections, shines well enough to be a highlight in a universe of good games this year.

8 / 10.0 - SteamWorld Build
Nov 29, 2023

SteamWorld Build fulfills its mission and delivers a fun construction game with the undeniable charm of the versatile and long-running SteamWorld franchise. A little more depth or challenge would be welcome, of course, but there will always be room for polished experiences that value fun and are capable of welcoming new players with excellence. Recommended.

Tales of Arise - Beyond the Dawn fulfills its mission as an expansion, bringing new missions, challenging opponents and more of what made the base game one of the best and most fun JRPGs released in recent years. Without fear of touching on delicate themes such as prejudice and family abandonment, or showing that not every ending is as happy as it seems, this DLC is a great opportunity for both veterans and newcomers to visit this universe and enjoy its good visuals, great combat system and fun progression.

8 / 10.0 - Gunbrella
Sep 20, 2023

Gunbrella shows that umbrellas can be as lethal as they are fun, at least in a dark virtual world where shoot first and ask questions later is very effective. Violent, stylish and thought-provoking, here's a short but well-worth journey on Switch.

8 / 10.0 - Atlas Fallen
Aug 10, 2023

As a fan of action games, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fun with Atlas Fallen. Though it's not revolutionary in any way, the new work by Deck13 is yet another competent release in 2023. Being the gauntlet wielder doesn't come without its issues, but defeating sandy monsters while surfing in a post-apocalyptic desert is way too thrilling to be ignored.

Many years after its original release, Persona 3 Portable is still a respectable JRPG, fully capable of immersing the player in its long, deliciously dark and thought-provoking plot. Not even its repetitive character or the omission of the improvements brought by Persona 3 FES are enough to dim the brilliance of this game that finds a home on the Switch as welcoming and natural as the PSP once was. Freed from exclusivity, it's time to discover or revisit one of Atlus' most important classics, and with its flexibility, Nintendo's console is the most appropriate way to do so. Recommended.

8 / 10.0 - Old World
Dec 7, 2022

By investing in both interpersonal relationships and the complexity of its elements, Old World and its expansion Heroes of the Aegean impress. Even the confusing interface by modern standards of the genre and the low amount of initial leaders are not enough to prevent a recommendation.

Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher demonstrates that, even after a long, uneventful hiatus, the Monster Rancher franchise still has plenty of wood to burn. Its sometimes repetitive gameplay and slow progression may scare players who like quick results, but for all intents and purposes, there's no denying that this is a natural and successful crossover like few others.

8 / 10.0 - Victoria 3
Nov 6, 2022

Victoria 3 is rich, vast and above all captivating. While its shallow combat system is at odds with the rest of the work, shaping entire nations is fun enough to entertain for quite a while. Whether you're a grand strategy game veteran or newcomer, know that Paradox's newest feat doesn't disappoint in its core mission of granting the player the freedom to rewrite a sizable portion of world history as they see fit.

8 / 10.0 - Coromon
Apr 12, 2022

Strictly following the feat of your inspirations can prove to be a double-edged sword, but in Coromon's case, the mix of nostalgic formula with punctual additions works too well to be ignore. In the end, the reality is that the adventure through Velua may not be as bright as the sun (or its great reference), but it doesn't stop being fun. And that cannot be overlooked.

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX successfully brings two classic games to today's platforms. Even more than twenty years after their original releases, the unique concept remains fun and interesting, and the implementation of the search for a music catalog ensures that part of the magic of generating new monsters through discs remains preserved, albeit partially.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is a welcome surprise among this year's RPGs. Every little detail oozes charisma and you can feel the developers' affection for their creation in virtually every moment of the game. The absence of more difficulty levels and the overall mechanics' simplicity may not suit everyone, and the line between calm and boredom is always a difficult one to traverse, but those who appreciate the proposal and moderate their expectations will find a concise adventure here, relaxing and — most importantly — fun.

8 / 10.0 - Evertried
Oct 27, 2021

In an increasingly competitive scenario, Evertried manages to stand out with its unique mix of turn-based strategy, grid movement and roguelite mechanics, proving to be a beautiful exponent of the interesting and growing Brazilian indie scene. Even its occasional problems are not enough to detract from a work that finds its best version on the Nintendo Switch, given its play style and the system's natural portability and flexibility. The hope is that an eventual sequel will expand the concepts presented here — the potential, like a certain haunted tower, is too great to go unnoticed.

8 / 10.0 - Empire of Sin
Dec 3, 2020

While the flaws in Empire of Sin are significant, they are not enough to take the shine away from this Romero Games title. The bold proposal to mix different genres and moments in a game only ends up making the experience varied and interesting, especially for fans of the theme and genres contemplated here. When you spend time with the game, you get the impression that it would benefit from a little more development time. Still, creating and maintaining an empire of respect is as fun as it sounds. Honestly, I hope that the developers and the publisher continue to support the franchise - there is undeniable potential here.
