Many might be afraid that Bug Fables, with its prolific use of the traditional Paper Mario mechanics, might be nothing more than a cheap imitation of an all-time classic. However, that could not be farther from the truth: Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is a superb experience with attention to detail in all its components. Its adventure honours everything that made Paper Mario great and even surpasses it in some areas, all while presenting us with a new world and characters we genuinely care about.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a delightful and rich adventure throughout, with tons of variety and an amazing sense of humour. It is easy to recommend playing it for its memorable mishaps and a story that, while simple, has clearly been given the attention that was sorely missed in the past two games. The Origami King is, though, blemished by the basic and superfluous battle system that clearly didn’t go the extra mile to attain depth and a sense of purpose.

Risky’s Revenge is a traditional Shantae experience, on a smaller scale. This is indeed a fun metroidvania with all the humour and charm of the latest Shantae games, a well-built world, and a unique cast. However, it’s difficult to forget we’re face to face with an old game, as compared to later entries Risky’s Revenge features less variety, an annoyingly simplistic map system and, of course, the several small improvements that WayForward made to the series with this game’s successors.

Pikmin 3 was already a delightful and charming adventure on Wii U, and it has only gotten better with the jump to the Nintendo Switch. It was a pleasure to revisit this polished and relaxing experience, especially considering the several adjustments made to improve quality-of-life and to make it more gratifying to both newcomers and veterans. Couple that with a sizable dose of side content, Pikmin 3 Deluxe is an excellent addition to the Switch's expanding library and it's probably the Wii U port most deserving of the subtitle "Deluxe" since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Super Mario 3D World and Bowser’s Fury are two faces of the same coin, two adventures opposite in structure yet connected by their primary goal: providing players with the purest and most polished fun. If you have not experienced it on Wii U, this is an obligatory game; if you played it before, the great adjustments made to the original game and the inclusion of the stellar Bowser Fury may be enough to convince you to revisit one of the greatest Nintendo games in the last decade.

With The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Zelda fans will be able to experience a phenomenal adventure with captivating characters, ingenious puzzles and an unparalleled combat system, this time without the main aspects that degrade the game on Wii. Each of the short games included in Short Games Collection #1 delivers truly different experiences, and generally fulfills Nerd Monkeys' stated purpose of quickly giving the player something to think about. However, the value of this set is affected by the existence and accessibility of the PC versions, and because there are no major additions. A larger amount of games in the set or extrinsic bonuses such as "making of" videos would be fundamental to make the package more appetizing.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is an amazing homage to the series legacy, as it brings back more than 300 levels from the original games with superb controls, polish and presentation, and at the same time introduces new additions which modernize the package and increase its replay value.

Combining some of the best mini games, board games and mechanics in the series, alongside pertinent quality of life improvements, a surprisingly competent online multiplayer system and an audiovisual makeover, Mario Party Superstars stands out quite positively from the last decades' titles of the series. In fact, we could consider that the only significant disappointment is in regards to the unsatisfactory amount of boards included. Despite this, the quality of the content covered makes this compilation not only one of the best games in the series, but also one of Switch's most fun and addictive party games.

Although the story and combat mechanics shine in Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, the predictability of this game means that this horror title, in a short time, loses any kind of impact on the player. The new features that the remastering introduces do nothing to mitigate this problem, as they do not influence the gameplay itself. What's more, this version is marred by performance issues that severely tarnish the experience, especially in TV mode.

With Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, Yacht Club Games has made its versatility evident in creating gameplay radically different from Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, without losing a hint of the quality that made the developer's original game so acclaimed. The end result is a phenomenal and refined puzzle game that is complex without being alienating and has a variety of options to enhance the fun of both novice and experienced players alike. How you'll enjoy Metroid Dread depends on what you're expecting from the game. If you want a traditional Metroid experience, don't hesitate, because that's exactly what Metroid Dread is. In addition to following the formula of the classics to the letter, Dread introduces us to the most versatile and agile Samus in the series, majestic and challenging bosses, and an HD presentation that is a treat for the eyes. But we were hoping to find in Dread some kind of evolution of the formula, a wish that we don't deem unfair considering the indie titles of the same genre which managed successfully to improve the formula's potential. Metroid Dread seems to have been created in a bubble, so much so that the only innovation that MercurySteam has introduced is a new type of enemies, the seven E.M.M.I., which poetically exhaust their originality in minutes.

It may have taken decades to get the first Kirby 3D finally delivered into our hands, but the wait was definitely worth it. While playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land, we even feel that HAL Laboratory spent all these years developing Kirby in 3D. Not only the intuitiveness of the gameplay, but also the level of quality and polish are elements that boasts the adventure from start to finish. Not satisfied with being a perfect adaptation of Kirby to 3D environments, Kirby and the Forgotten Land also introduces a series of novelties that reaffirm the potential of the next games. All this, while establishing it as a refreshing and fun experience, that promises to put a smile on the lips of any player.

Nothing in Lila's Sky Ark is offensive or frustrating to the player. Still, likewise, nothing is remarkable or exemplary. Our adventure through the beautiful world of Lila regularly leaves us to think of the potential that this game would have, if it have been studied or developed more deeply in regards to its challenges, mechanics and its a more appealing story. As such, this game ends up being a harmless way to spend a few hours, without anything that significantly distinguishes it from other games of the genre.

Rationally, several aspects detract from the overall quality of the set: a Wii Sports Resort-level amount of sports would be desirable, and decisions such as limiting play with friends to TV Mode and a disproportionate emphasis on online mode can conflict with the experience. Yet, this appreciation and conditioning are out of line with the reality of playing Nintendo Switch Sports: this sequel marks the successful return of the addictive fun of Wii Sports, especially with friends, but surprisingly also with strangers via the online mode.

With a special emphasis on real-time management, a nostalgic presentation/narrative tone, and a diverse array of supernatural monsters and weapons, RESEARCH and DESTROY is a unique turn-based/tactical RPG that encourages speed of action without diminishing the process of decision making. However, the game's reliance on recurring enemy spawns in random positions is problematic to promote any strategy development and contributes to a feeling of repetition, a feeling also associated with the scarcity of unique objectives and bosses.
