9 / 10.0 - Gnosia
Mar 17, 2021

Overcoming obstacles to reach the truth is the main motto of Gnosia, which can be translated into the Latin expression “through the difficulties for the stars”. With quick matches that can be completed in 20 minutes or less, you can feel the tension of playing a multiplayer in single player mode. With a sci-fi ambience that abuses the theory of the multiverse, this indie is, above all, an intriguing continuous experience, sometimes a little repetitive, that promises to arrest the player from beginning to end. In addition to stimulating logical capacity, the title presents another point of view on parallel universes that can even put our own existence in check. Are loops a metaphor for life?

Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers can be considered one of the best official fighting games in the franchise, even if it lacks some important aspects. As much as it does not have any innovation for the genre, it has a very solid presentation and easy and simple gameplay, making it a good title for both veterans and novices. Without giving up the elements that make Touhou a highlight within the shoot 'em up genre, Antinomy of Common Flowers may even be the gateway to the franchise for consoles - and for the West as a whole.

Death end re; Quest is a game that reinvents its genre with metalanguage and the mix between different types of games. Without any serious performance problem, it has an immersive and immersive history, being a good option for those who want to escape the traditionalism of RPGs or even for those who like technology in general.

9 / 10.0 - Overboard!
Jun 13, 2021

Although it doesn't follow the same line as How to Get Away with Murder, Overboard! has a plot with several endings that vary according to the actions chosen during the campaign. With balanced humor and suspense, immersive soundtrack and unique artistic style, this adventure game challenges the player's logical thinking in every run. Will Veronica be able to get her late husband's money to live in freedom in New York?

With several qualities of life from current mobile games and facilitating mechanics, Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny retains the elements that made the franchise famous, but unfortunately suffers from serious performance issues arising from the graphics. Even with that big flaw, the title has everything to be one of the best games in the series so far, not because of its history (which was never Disgaea's strong point), but because it allows new players to feel comfortable in a strategy RPG famous for its absurd numbers and practically infinite grinding.

8 / 10.0 - Graviter
Jul 5, 2021

As a whole, Graviter is a great choice for puzzle fans. Rich in possibilities and with a very attractive aesthetic in the combination of backgrounds and effects, it is certainly a good experience for those who just want to spend quality time between an adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom or a walk around Hyrule. With fair challenges, we have a game that certainly calls attention to the utmost care, especially regarding the functional physics and satisfactory trajectories to watch when reaching the objective of each map.

Musou fans will surely enjoy all the features Samurai Warriors 5 offers, and new players will have no problem following the story. The gameplay is very fluid, the audiovisual presentation is dazzling and the story doesn't leave any loose ends, besides being a treat for history lovers. Unfortunately, the negative points, especially the camera control, harm the gameplay. It's up to the player to decide whether or not it's worth venturing into the Sengoku period, especially because Samurai Warriors 5 doesn't present anything new compared to other musou games.

Bai Qu: Hundreds of Melodies suffers from serious problems that compromise the game in some way. However, the experience provided by this incredible story of approximately ten hours manages to offset these inconveniences and is a treat for lovers of intriguing plots, especially those who treat life as it is: sweet but bitter at the same time.

Shadowverse: Champion's Battle is a TCG with very newbie friendly RPG elements. Unlike other franchises in the genre, Cygames hit the nail on the head by creating a game accessible to all types of players, whether or not they are familiar with Shadowverse and its rules. At the same time, the game manages to remain faithful to the PC and smartphone version, and has the attractiveness of the “anime style”, breaking the seriousness that TCGs usually have. The title also ends up being a good option for a younger target audience, thanks to the charisma of the characters and the special effects in each duel, but without leaving the more veterans and completionists aside.

Indigo 7: Quest for Love has simple gameplay and a satisfying visual presentation, but that's all the positives this puzzle has to offer. The lack of an options menu, long matches based on trial and error and a weak story are some of the problems. It even entertains at first, but soon falls into tedious repetitiveness and, consequently, into oblivion.

BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites gives the player the painful and pleasurable experiences that classics like Castlevania, The Prince of Persia and The Lion King still guarantee today. The frenetic action got even better with the audiovisual improvements — although the art style might not suit everyone — but the game remains an excellent example of take it or leave it, such is its difficulty. Fans of gratuitous violence can certainly feel the appeal of BloodRayne, but only platformer lovers of the 80s and 90s will be able to take full advantage of the dhampir adventure.

9 / 10.0 - LoveChoice
Sep 27, 2021

Love is a feeling that demands concession from everyone involved, the maxim of give and take. Loving someone means that sometimes it is necessary to let the loved one go. It also means trust and respect, recognizing your and others' limits. These are exactly the sensations, the nuances of this complex feeling, which LoveChoice manages to convey in an interactive visual novel composed of three believable stories and delivered with a beautiful and immersive audiovisual presentation. Because love is sweet and bitter at the same time.

Agatha Christie — Hercule Poirot: The First Cases brings an original story, but it's a worthy homage to the Queen of Crime. With a gameplay and plot that are both interesting and compelling employing logical reasoning, it's hard not to feel yourself in the actual role of a young, but eccentric detective Hercule Poirot, whose method to solve crimes is explored faithfully. Maybe it'll be better appreciated by the fans of Agatha Christie, who are already used to her narrative style, but it can be enjoyed by all police novel fans.

Corpse Party (2021) brings to the current generation the acclaimed horror game that is still a reference in the genre. Although some extra settings could have been added in order to make the player more comfortable during the game, such as a mini map and more language options, the well-constructed atmosphere and the tension transmitted without any difficulty make Corpse Party be revisited yet another time, both by those who already know the franchise and by those who have never had contact with it.

Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp has an interesting premise for a game but it unfortunately doesn't fit the standards of the Switch. Considering its gameplay and gacha features, it would be more attractive as one of the many "freemium" titles available for mobile devices. Unfortunately, not even seeing your favorite characters in swimsuits is enough to make it an attractive game.

Reminiscence in the Night is the type of game that has different effects on each individual, depending on how much we are willing to emotionally invest in this introspective journey. The recommendation is for those who like to take time to themselves and lose themselves in thoughts and daydreams. If seen as an experimental project based on introspection and reflection, Reminiscence in the Night fulfills its role; as a game, it can be disappointing.

Death end re;Quest 2 brings a thought-provoking story and makes welcome changes to combat, especially with a working auto mode. However, while there are successes, the game repeats the mistakes of its predecessor, aggravating them even more, especially in the graphics. Between the PC/PS4 version and the Switch version, unfortunately I can't recommend playing on the hybrid console.

While it's not entirely an experience of the series it's based on, Record of Lodoss War -Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- offers all the features a metroidvania fan could want, without feeling like "just another clone" of Metroid or Castlevania. Team Ladybug was able to transpose RPG elements, the root of Lodoss War, to a simple and fair, but totally satisfying action platformer, which pleases both the longing fans of the series and gamers looking for casual gameplay.

Variable Barricade is a visual novel with a unique gameplay system, fragmenting its plot in a big board. Except for the common route, each route presents unique events, prioritizing Hibari's relationship with each of her suitors, where it proves that judging a book by the cover is a tremendous error. With excellent gameplay and replay value; fluid and interesting narrative; captivating characters; and an impeccable audiovisual presentation, romcom lovers should not miss the bizarre situations between the Tojo family heir and her suitors.

Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection is a compilation of games previous released on the PC Engine and is geared towards the franchise fans, who already know Yuuko's saga and wish to play it again in the current generation; however, those action platformers can also be enjoyed by retro game enthusiasts. Though there are discrepancies in the gameplay and graphic quality among the titles contained in the collection, the excellent soundtrack and narrative told through Japanese-voiced animated cutscenes is more than enough to showcase one of the most important franchises of the 80s/90s.
