Battletoads is utterly ridiculous and stupidly good fun which is exactly what we need right now.

Battletoads had really great brawling segments that featured an awesome visual aesthetic that was matched with a hilarious story, however it was bogged down with bad mini games.

Battletoads doesn’t stick around for a long time, clocking at approximately 4-5 hours in length, with that number varying somewhat dependent on difficulty level or proficiency at certain game types. What hurts this 2020 take on a beloved franchise is an inability to stay to course for long enough to whet the appetites of long time fans.

Battletoads is one of the biggest surprises of the summer, with a charming, funny and challeging game thats completely worth checking out.

Overall, Battletoads feels like a bit of a relic of the past, which really speaks to how well Dlala have nailed that attitude-era style the 90s is famous for. The story can be humorous (at points) and there’s significantly more of it than I expected, while the variety in gameplay styles and mechanics keeps the experience fresh the whole way through. Unfortunately, that same style and humour does feel dated and grating at points, while the game’s combat sections are also some of its least engaging.

When it was all said and done, Battletoads isn’t going to win awards for writing, doesn’t set a new bar for any single genre, and none of their mini games should be spun off into full fledged games. Yet Dlala created something fun here, kept me engaged and offered a good amount of content without over-staying its welcome. This is a good effort for a new studio and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do in the future. In these troubled times we live in, I welcome a game that exists solely to be bright, over the top, and fun. Battletoads may not be the best retro reboot this year, but it’s a good time nonetheless.

If you want a smooth cruise with hand-holding for the first half of the game, this isn’t the place. But for everyone else who long for a late 80s and 90s challenge that’s made somewhat fair and tailored for this generation, Battletoads (2020) is a surprising effort if you think this era’s crop of games aren’t hardcore enough.

Battletoads never shrugs off its 90s roots and refuses to grow up and act like an adult.

Battletoads combines a lot that would have had potential for a surprise hit. The great humor and the hand drawn animations underline, how much effort the developers have put into this. Sadly the whole thing is way too short and has nearly no replay value.

Battletoads contains elements that will entertain players who love the beat 'em up genre. It could be a much better game if some of its shortcomings were corrected and the opportunity to play online.

Battletoads manages to stay true to the source material, all whilst offering an array of varied and fun gameplay mechanics that really spice up the experience. I had a good time battling through each level, whether that was when fighting in classic beat ‘em up action, racing through on a jet-bike, or sliding my way away from a big monstrous threat. Sure, a few mini-games can fall short of the mark at times and the difficulty could feel a bit forced, but it didn’t stop Battletoads from being a really enjoyable experience. It’s just a shame that there isn’t any online multiplayer included, with Battletoads really lending itself perfectly to playthroughs with friends. Of course, local play is possible, but with the game included in Xbox Game Pass it would have been perfect for online romps with other players. Hopefully, it’s something the developers might patch in sometime in the future because it feels like a missed opportunity right now…

Battletoads certainly hits it out of the park when it comes to playing with friends, and a good romp for solo players. It’s a nice little game for Game Pass members, especially for fans of beat em ups in general.

Battletoads is back after more than 26 years with a very fun and diverse adventure. Even if its tone or artistic direction can alienate some, this is a great, fun and solid game.

Battletoads has a notorious reputation among older gamers as both an incredibly challenging yet insanely wacky series. The franchise was one of Rare's smash hits but has been on a multi-decade hiatus and limited to cameo appearances until now. With Dlala Studios reviving the dormant franchise with a brand new entry that remains loyal to the original beat 'em up formula but with cartoonish hand-drawn visuals. Battletoads is a surprisingly amusing and lighthearted title with a charming story and fun combat and serves as a great new start for the franchise. If only it didn't release it with a major technical issue.

One of the best strongest points is the fact that if you’re playing solo or with a friend, you can switch between Rash, Zitz and Pimple by pressing the corresponding d-pad arrow (except the shmups and platforming levels). This gives players a chance to try out all three characters and also a lifeline if the current character they are using is near death, they can switch with a full health character.

It’s great to see the Toads back. Hopefully it’s not another 26 years before they grace our screens again. Toadally awesome.

Sure, it’s just an above average beat ’em up when you analyze it technically, but it won me over with its animations, soundtrack, and sense of humor. It knows the franchise has never been that good to begin with, resulting in a neverending barrage of self-aware jokes and meta humoristic situations that made me smile at all times.

Battletoads could have survived by doing a lot less, yet Dlala has gone above and beyond what would have been required to grab the attention of hardcore fans. The result is a challenging, yet accessible, ‘90s inspired beat-em-up that doesn’t rely on nostalgia to be charming, fun and engaging. Sure, there’s some aspects of the game that feel a bit lacklustre or frustrating, but at its core, Battletoads is full of heart. This revival has put the toads back in the spotlight, giving them more of a chance to shine than ever before. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rash, Zitz, and Pimple end up with their own TV show.

Even though Battletoads has its flaws, it is easily the most unique and interesting first-party title to arrive on Xbox in this current generation.
