Evergate has the potential to be an incredible game to play, with its beautiful artwork and animation, and intelligent and well-planned gameplay. Unfortunately, every level feels like a struggle, needing pinpoint precision to complete and move on to the next. It ends up a frustrating experience more than an enjoyable challenge.

Evergate is a wonderfully designed puzzle-platformer that starts off strong and goes from strength to strength over the course of its campaign. Every new world you encounter here adds a new twist to proceedings, gradually becoming more complex as it layers mechanics on top of one each other, enabling you to experiment and come up with your own unique ways to bound across its intricate levels. Speed-running here, for us, feels like it was tacked on for no real reason but, besides this one little misstep, this really is an essential purchase for puzzle/platforming fans and a standout example of its genre on Switch.

The puzzles rely on timing instead of cleverness, the platforming relies on planning instead of skill, and the movement becomes limiting due to the conditions before it can be used. I really wished I could give this game some higher praise. Perhaps players who are looking for a slow platformer that rewards trial and error without much gratification can get a kick out of Evergate. But personally I am not planning on ever playing it again.

Using the Soulflame to conquer Ki's challenges gives Evergate a twist on the usual style of puzzle platformers.

Even though its premise has a lot of promise, Evergate's reliance on trial and error makes the experience feel more frustrating than fun.

Evergate is a beautiful and clever platformer. Once you get your head round the mechanics there is something quite special here to enjoy for the puzzle-platforming fan. If you need to take a break away from this world for a while, Evergate will take you to an afterlife with great music, rewarding challenges, and a moving story that may just speak to those who share a special bond with someone.

If you are a massive fan of platformers and want something different or if you like puzzle games and haven’t really found that platformer that works for you, I think Evergate might be up your alley.

All in all, if you like 2D platformers and puzzle games, you’ll spend a lot of time with Evergate. Between a huge variety of levels, a magnificent story, that incredible soundtrack, and trying to collect all the artifacts, you’ll have your work cut out for you with this one. While it may be reminiscent of Ori on the surface, Stone Lantern Games have absolutely crafted their own one of a kind masterpiece. It’s a simple concept, with a whole lot going for it.

Whilst it can feel unnecessarily punishing at times, there’s no doubt that Evergate still has plenty to offer and it’s certainly an interesting game to experience and more so for those out there who enjoy solving puzzles.

Have you ever looked at a game and thought it was going to play one way, but it plays another? Well, that is my opening thought with Evergate. When I first saw it at the end of the August Indie World of 2020, I thought it looked like the Ori games because it had a similar art style. Needless to say, I was completely wrong. What followed was a surprise though, as even though it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, it still stunned me.

Evergate is without a doubt an excellent puzzle/platformer game designed for the most persistent, who don't easily let their mistakes down. It's a game that we advise you to leave it installed if you ever reach a more complicated crossroad. Just turn it off and come back after a while! You'll be sure to pull it through!

Soon enough levels get extremely complicated with reflective surfaces that break after one use so be prepared for trial and error, A LOT of trial and error and restarting levels as the game throws new mechanic after new mechanic into the fray like killer crows and rotating platforms.

Evergate would be much more suited for a younger audience who love to solve puzzles. The story is intriguing, as you would like to guide the protagonist back to earth.

I’d consider Evergate one of those sneaky indies that has a look that gives one impression but whose level of challenge and action move in a very different direction...
