Once I got the hang of drifting, I really started enjoying Hotshot Racing, but it will not sustain me as a solo player for long. Its utility (for me) will be multiplayer shenanigans, which is just fine.

Hotshot Racing is a great racing game and a beautiful tribute to the classics of the 90s. However, in addition to its gameplay being simple, the number of tracks is low and therefore it appears to be a small title, despite having a considerable number of modes for the genre.

Beautiful looking, challenging racing game that recreates all the things you love about arcade racers. Great single and multiplayer experiences to be had here.

Without its atrocious AI Hotshot Racing is okay. With it, it's a racing game to avoid. Genre aficionados, especially those who lean towards the more arcade side of the scale, will manage to quench their thirst for a bunch of evenings, but it's unlikely this will stay with you for long.

Hotshot Racing is an ode to oldschool arcade racers. It brings a lot of fun along with very little content.

Frustrations aside, though — and I’ll emphasise that your tolerance for such frustrations will likely be largely dependent on if you grew up with PS1 and PS2-era racing games in particular — Hotshot Racing is a fine addition to today’s lineup of modern arcade racers. It’s not so long ago that the arcade racer was considered to be a completely dead genre — but between a variety of very different takes on it that we’ve seen over the last few years, including this, Slipstream, Cruis’n Blast, Horizon Chase Turbo and Inertial Drift, it’s clear that it’s not just alive and well, but thriving.

Retro racers definitely don't get much better than Hotshot Racing so if you have a fondness for racing in the '90s, you're sure to love it.

Hotshot Racing is exactly the kind of racing game that I've missed for a while. It reminds me of the great racers of my youth but is modernized in every suitable way - apart from the AI, probably. There are also some technical hiccups on PS4 Pro.

Hotshot Racing has these early 90s SEGA vibes like SEGA Rally and Virtua Racing, but the performance issues hurt the sense of speed and feeling that it’s going for. The modern-retro look and feel works well with the low-polygon environments and cars, yet crisp textures and no aliased edges. The racing itself offers different styles for all kinds of players, and the boost mechanic is really clever. Hotshot Racing lacks the overall staying power of more modern racers, but it’s sure to occupy your time online and off.

Hotshot Racing is pure fun, and that's something I can always get behind. It's good fun for all ages, but I suspect the older generation will look on Hotshot Racing with a little more love in their eyes than the clueless kids of today.

HotShot Racing is a must buy if you are looking to rekindle your love affair with arcade racers. Just be prepared to battle the rubber banding for the finish line.

Hotshot Racing is a nice throwback to the heyday of stimulating and cheerful arcade racers of the early 90’s. It’s as challenging as your average Ridge Racer or Virtua Racing, but sadly, nowhere near as charming.

Fans of classic arcade racers from the 90s will feel right at home with Hotshot Racing. Lucky Mountain have clearly demonstrated an understanding of what made those games so great while adding just enough modern modes and systems to allow for both better re-playability and player engagement.

Hotshot Racing is a brilliant arcade-style racer that feels satisfyingly old-school with its visuals, its impressive track design, and its action-packed racing. I’ve had a LOT of fun blasting through GPs across its creative variety of tracks, whilst the different game modes bring a fair bit of variety to the gameplay experience. It’s wholly accessible thanks to its simple control scheme too, though still offers enough challenge to make it ‘easy to play but difficult to master’ – just don’t be surprised if you get a little bit frustrated at the occasional case of rubber-banding throughout some races. I do wish that it could have offered a bit more single player content to get through, but with both local and online multiplayer on offer it’ll be easy to lose hours on end with Hotshot Racing’s fiendishly frantic but ultimately delightful racing action.

Hotshot Racing does very well with its proposed role: to be a fun arcade game inspired by the 32-bit era. This is a beautiful example of a perfect choice for those weekend afternoons to play on the couch with friends, as it was in the old days.

The quips from the racers, the announcer yelling “CHECKPOINT!” every time you cross over one, and even the music evoke the feeling of sitting down in a seat of an old racing cabinet, putting some quarters in, gripping the steering wheel, and mashing the gas pedal. Of course, the wheel and seat will be missing in most home racing experiences, Hotshot Racing is still plenty of fun without them. If you want to take a short trip back in time to the ’90s, this is one ride you won’t want to miss.

In short, Hotshot Racing is great. As someone who never really sticks with racing games for long, I can honestly see myself coming back to this one a lot. It’s just so much fun to pick up and play. Drifting is so satisfying and the different modes add some variation. With free content coming in the future and a rock hard trophy list, there is always more to strive for. In terms of over-the-top arcade gameplay, this is my favourite racer on PlayStation 4.

When it’s all put together, I had fun with Hotshot Racing, but I don’t see myself coming back to it anytime soon. It’s by no means a poorly designed title; far from it actually! If you’re yearning for a racing game that aims to replicate the arcade games of yore, you’re going to have a blast! Especially if you’ve got some friends to join in the fun! Though if you plan to go in solo, you’ll have to deal with overly aggressive AI and an obtrusive amount of rubber banding. If you were disappointed with Team Sonic Racing last year, Hotshot Racing is sure to restore your faith in Sumo Digital!

I was surprised by how much I liked Hotshot Racing. It’s not normally my type of game but I had a lot of fun with it on the Nintendo Switch. I think that those that enjoy arcade racers should definitely check it out.

I’ve had so much fun with Hotshot Racing, it’s exactly the kind of racing game I’ve been looking to dip into and it offers enough to keep me coming back for more. Disregard at your peril.
