Despite its flaws, however, Ghostrunner is a fantastic platformer. While we would have loved more lore and a more consistent set of boss experiences, these are small pickings for a game that delivers a Cyberpunk dystopia that we loved tearing down. You can grab Ghostrunner on PC, via Steam, and console.

Ghostrunner's fusion of parkour and one-hit kill gameplay makes for a challenging but brilliant experience worth checking out.

Frenetic action and precise manoeuvring add to this cyberpunk game in which success wobbles on a blade edge

Without my suffering-tinted lenses, Ghostrunner is a fast-paced, tough-ass platformer. Every stage is a non-stop barrage of fresh new challenges. Death is around every corner if you ever stop moving. You’ll experience crushing defeat in a host of different ways, but your victories will be all the sweeter. You can choose your path to victory, with multiple routes available through some of the larger stages. On the aesthetic side of things, more or less every stage is drenched in cyberpunk minutiae. The neon, the grime, and the violence lend an electric urgency to your already death-defying exploits. My only warning is this: know what you’re in for first. First-person action platform games aren’t for everyone. Of course, I had to play one to discover this, so who knows! Maybe a new favorite subgenre is waiting in the wings.

Ghostrunner is not for the casual gamer. The presentation is top of the charts and it’ll sell countless copies on style alone, but I fear a lot of people will quickly drop off because of its difficulty. It does cater excellently to speedrunners and people with a tendency for hardcore precision execution, so I’m more than expecting it to become a cult-classic.

Although Ghostrunner‘s story is straightforward and simplistic, the gameplay is anything but. The parkour aspect of Ghostrunner may feel familiar but the addition of the combat mechanics set this game apart from the rest. Each level brings with it new enemies and a novel configuration of obstacles that will test your skills over and over again.

Ghostrunner has a lot going for it, it's an awesome concept that really could have benefited from some more fine-tuning. While there were times I was getting visually frustrated in segments, I couldn’t put the game down for long. It reminds me a lot of Katana Zero, basically the same slow-mo ninja concept but as a retro 2D game and I absolutely adored that title.

Ghostrunner is a high-octane adrenaline rush of a game with exciting gameplay, a great soundtrack and creative level design, however performance issues and inconsistent platforming keep it from being perfect.

Since it’s not malicious we’re not minded to mark the game down just for being difficult, especially as the euphoria when you do get things right – especially a long chain of parkour moves that ends in a successful kill – is so wonderfully rewarding. It may be lower budget but Ghostrunner is a better game than Mirror’s Edge ever was, so if you’re frustrated at a certain other cyberpunk game’s delay then you should really consider this alternative – even if you might end up getting frustrated with it for a different reason.

I’d love to be better at the game, but that seems unlikely to happen. With that being said, I would still heartily recommend it… provided you keep in mind the frequent dying and need for precision timing etc… if that sort of challenge is up your alley then I think you will find a lot of fun here!

While the overall experience was short-lived and left me wanting more, the developers ended up setting the perfect pace and delivered a truly great video game experience that is easy to learn and satisfying to master.

Ghostrunner will carry us through to our next generation, with the implication that even the simplest gameplay loop can deliver an action packed experience. A combination of solid parkour traversing, incredible detail and design with seamless and stylish offense that is fused with an incredibly futuristic overture makes for one of the best gaming experiences, this year.

Ghostrunner’s trial-and-error gameplay caters to the hardcore community but leaves the rest a little frustrated. There’s a fun experience hidden deep within the game, but to get there you have to, well, get good!

Ghostrunner might be standing on the shoulders of games like Mirror's Edge, and even Dishonored, in terms of inspiration with its parkour and slick swordplay. But it also separates heads from those shoulders and stands proud as the far better application of both disciplines-Ghostrunner is a sleek, fun exercise for deft hands.
