Godfall is a massive surprise. It borrows combat from God of War and has enough loot to make Diablo blush. It may look garish but it's well designed and has that "one more go" factor.

Godfall’s excellent combat system and gorgeous graphics will earn it many fans, though its cookie cutter storyline and chronic lack of enemy variety drag down the experience a bit.

Godfall is guilty of being a little repetitive in design, but the fantastic combat mechanics and satisfying loot system more than make up for it. I had a whole lot of fun slicing away at enemies, whilst seeing my gear and skills constantly improve brought with it a rewarding sense of progress – especially when comparing my loadout with friends when playing through the campaign in online co-op. It is a shame that a lot of time has to be spent grinding and seeing the same environments again and again could be a bore, but there’s enough going on outside of those flaws to still make Godfall worth your attention. It might not necessarily be the best launch title on the PlayStation 5, but those who enjoy slick sword-clashing action and building up their own armour-clad warrior will definitely want to give it a try.

The balance in its combat systems is undoubtedly the greatest and best success of this Godfall, which also covers its solid systems with a very colorful artistic section that moves smooth as silk, with a multitude of details, reflections, brightness, flashes, and particles flooding the screen. And it controls itself wonderfully. They just lacked that little bit of ambition to take the game a little further in terms of scenario design, and try to alleviate a little the repetitiveness of a title that, on the other hand, is the first game of the studio and a new IP . It is something that makes us expect more and better things from Counterplay Games for the future. And also something that they should and I hope they are proud of.

Godfall quickly became an obsession for me, the gameplay is super addictive and the combat is brilliant. If you’re into loot-based games such as Diablo III, or you like games with heavy combat such as the Souls games, you’ll enjoy this game – as long as you don’t mind a bit of grinding if playing solo. If you’re looking for a deep story with lots of lore and background, this may not be for you (although there are hidden lore files to find), this will appeal more to those who like to jump in occasionally in order to gain better gear and experience. It won’t be for everyone but I couldn’t stop playing it once I started, THIS is a next-gen game – from it’s visuals to the use of the intuitive controller.

It's derivative, only has three zones, and doesn't have much to offer besides its combat, but Godfall will be enjoyable to anyone who just wants a well-tuned, good-looking action RPG to slash their way through.

While primarily Godfall is a fun game, if you're planning to play for solo content it may not be worth the full 60 USD at launch. Godfall mixes gameplay mechanics from a few popular titles, but doesn't do anything ground breaking. The game is great to play in co-op and will be best suited for those looking forward to multiplayer content.

Godfall drives home the dungeon crawl mantra on an unfortunately small scale, content wise. It does, however, boast a fun, albeit different, combat system, mountains of monsters, exciting minibosses, and actual boss fights. Godfall as a whole is a beautiful example of what can be accomplished through the glory of stunning environments, combat and gear. It offers different players different ways of playing, edging them all together into one cohesive, god-killing machine. All in all, it largely depends on the gamer themselves. Can you commit to grinding a would-be god out of existence?

Godfall is a looter slasher game that successfully delivers a robust combat system alongside gorgeous next-gen graphics. Unfortunately, it fails in utilizing all the potential of story settings. It also gets boring and repetitive near the end. It doesn’t add anything special to the action genre. It is not a bad game; neither is it a great game. Godfall is just an OK game with really astonishingly good graphics.

An enjoyable hack and slash looter that plays well despite a sparse, repeating structure

It's a shame this had to be $70 out of the gate on PS5 (it's $59.99 on PC) and that it has to be tethered to an always-online system. Whoever made that decision doomed this project's reputation, at least in the short term. Godfall is going to go down as one of the most divisive games of this generation's launch: a relic to some, a wild whispered-about gem to others. Make sure that before you get it, all of your action-junkie boxes are checked.

hope that Godfall gets some content updates, as it feels like Counterplay Games might have rushed development to meet the PS5 release date. The core combat system is satisfying and would shine if the game had more unique content to push the player forward. As it is, there’s very little hook and most players will likely find themselves getting bored around the halfway mark.

If you want a fairly mindless RPG experience that offers some different weapons and gear to mess around with, then Godfall will give you at least a few hours of fun. Just don’t expect a fantasy story worthy of its inspirations, or a world that fully explores its potential and you’ll be fine.

Godfall is a fun video game that relies on a very rich universe with an interesting lore. However is inferior to other similar proposals that now offer something similar in free to play format.

While not our final score for Godfall, we're reserving the opportunity to adjust the tally for Godfall based on the endgame content. If it somehow redeems the lackluster loot that players will carve through during the campaign, that number might change. Otherwise, go into this one looking for some quality swordplay and subpar swords.

Godfall is not a title without its charms. The combat system is solid and satisfying, and technically, the game is great proof of PlayStation 5's potential. But cramming levels full of particles effects and shining lights does not necessarily make for good aesthetic design, and Godfall also suffers from a weak story and repetitive endgame.

Godfall currently feels very familiar: it unashamedly borrows the loot system that made Destiny and Borderlands great, attempting to mix it with hardcore Souls-like melee combat. In the first few hours, this makes the game feel a little dull. But the core mechanics feel well built and could act as a stable base for the game's more interesting character building and co-op dynamics, of which I've currently only scratched the surface.

Godfall is one of the very few new IPs available for next-gen consoles at launch, and while it's fun to play and gorgeous to look at, it doesn't have much else going for it.

Truth be told, Godfall is a hard experience to review. You have a serviceable story, impressive graphics for a launch title, satisfying combat centered around an underwhelming loot system, RPG mechanics, and diversity. I will honestly say I did not get the experience I was expecting, something like Destiny centered around swords, but it was still good. There are certainly great things to be said about everything here, you should just go in expecting more of a hack and slash game than one centered around loot.
