undefined. It Takes Two is a very fun game that should honestly be about half its length, but the Switch very much does not feel like the place you should go to play it. The major graphical downgrades and added loading screens make it hard to recommend no matter how good the gameplay feels or how clever the writing is. If you're looking for a fun game to play alongside your significant other or a friend, It Takes Two is among your better options in general, but you'd likely have a far better experience on PlayStation or PC than on Switch.

It’s such a shame then that the narrative fails as badly as it does because when it comes to gameplay, most of It Takes Two is brilliantly designed. Much like The Last Of Us Part 2, this is going to be a narrative that divides many people. Unlike TLOU2, the mature themes here are tackled immaturely, with a weird tinted veil that completely brushes over the complexities of the issues being discussed. Gameplay-wise, this title is a blast to play through. Narratively though? This one’s a clanger.

There's no question It Takes Two is a well-crafted game. There's no debate it is somewhat fresh in its execution and should be applauded for following its own unique vision. Heck, no one would argue it's not fun. Its shortcomings, however, do make one wonder if others got a little drunk on the novelty of it all. Instead, while it offers a somewhat refreshing take on the platforming genre this is mostly by virtue of being an exclusively co-op experience. It could have benefited from more refined characters, as well as better online support on Nintendo Switch. Really, where It Takes Two is going to be best suited is on a couch with a partner playing together.

While the game's creativity shines in its beat-by-beat gameplay and level design, It Takes Two's selling point - its narrative - feels half-baked.

It Takes Two is a great product for those who want to have fun with a friend or, even better, with their partner. Despite its flaws, It Takes Two is a one-of-a-kind game that combines fun and joy with depth and drama of divorce making it a memorable title.

The co-op action here is memorable, ambitious, and quite unlike anything we’ve played in a while.

The game's story definitely tries to contextualize its setpieces, mechanics and shifting tones, but the disparate aspects of the game could not feel more divorced from each other, making them easy to enjoy and critique apart, but also similarly easy to slam for their ultimate incompatibility as a whole. I'm not crazy about the story, but it's serviceable and has big "R-Rated Pixar" energy, mostly being a vehicle for the thrill of actually playing the game with a friend. Maybe that's all It Takes Two has to be and, honestly, that's fine by me.

Although the story of Cody and May doesn't meet the standards set by the game's varied gameplay, It Takes Two sees the continued form of Josef Fares and his team at Hazelight in crafting wonderfully creative and engaging worlds for players to share and collaborate in. It Takes Two is a co-op experience that's second to none, which offers more ways than you can imagine to experience these larger than life play spaces.

It Takes Two takes the tried and true action/adventure-puzzler genre and turns it into possibly the most collaborative split-screen co-op game ever created. Coupled with the presented marital issues between the main characters that make for fantastic springboards to discuss with your own Player 2, It Takes Two will strongly resonate with just about anyone who picks up a controller. Although character development was a bit lacking and the story somewhat sluggish, these issues do not diminish the incredibly imaginative level design and supremely enjoyable boss battles. If you’re looking for a case study in co-op puzzle games that deserves to define the genre going forward, grab a partner and pick up It Takes Two.

You can't really go far wrong with It Takes Two if you're looking for some diverting fun with more serious undertones. It entertains, it looks nice, and it makes you laugh and gulp a bit. It's not outstanding, though, and in many places it lacks a bit of the otherwise so generously applied creativity, especially in the unfortunately somewhat too simple puzzles and the very stringent storytelling. And despite all that, it's fun when you have the right person at your side, with whom you can shimmy through this co-op game and then wait again for the next game from Hazlelight.

Is Switch the best place to play It Takes Two? Probably not: it’s a beautiful game which truly deserves the power of a high-end PC or next-gen console to really shine. But that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a worthy port. If Switch is your only gaming format, or even if you simply want to enjoy it again, this time handheld, you’re going to be in for a treat.

Offensively trite story aside, this is a supremely inventive and deliciously varied fun co-op experience that maybe overstays its welcome but is a great time spent regardless.

It Takes Two is a terrific game, albeit one that's hard to recommend without a certain mindset. 3D platformer enthusiasts sure won’t be disappointed. And if they look for unique ways to cooperate with other players, they've just found an excellent proposition. But the narration is a different beast; a much weaker one. It's definitely a step down copared to A Way Out.

To those who've been unable to play the BAFTA award-winning game on other platforms, or want to play locally without a split screen, It Takes Two on Switch is well worth its $39.99 price-tag. Additionally, the game's Switch port offers new voice-overs in Japanese, French, German, and Spanish, making this version an appealing option to native speakers of those languages. Others might be better sticking to PS4, Xbox, and PC, due to the game's superior graphics on those platforms. However, Turn Me Up Games has done a wonderful job of working within the Switch's limitations, allowing a new audience to enjoy It Takes Two's bombastic, harrowing, heartfelt journey.
