Reaching the credits, I sat back, exhausted and disappointed at where the series had ended up.

It’s a great compilation to play and replay to remind you of the series’ merits, but once you get some distance from it, Village’s design and narrative feel like mere footnotes.

Enjoyable in a mad, pantomime sort of way, Resident Evil Village feels like a pretty significant step back from Resident Evil VII, and a toe back into the absurd. It's a game you're unlikely to forget in a hurry, for entirely the wrong reasons.

Resident Evil Village is an uneven anthology of horror movie send-ups. Sometimes it offers a truly exciting vision of the series’ future with imaginative world-building and rewarding exploration. Other times, it’s a fairly run-of-the-mill shooter that struggles to provide any real stakes or tension. Those two tones are often at odds with one another, highlighting all of the franchise’s best and worst instincts in one eclectic package. Chalk it up to a quarter-life crisis.

There’s much to admire about Capcom’s intriguing franchise sequel, but as survival horror games go, this sometimes has the feel of Halloween pantomime.

The franchise's first-person foundation is beefed up in some areas but weakened in many more.

Resident Evil Village is a decent entry into a franchise that continues to wildly swing back and forth, stumbling into success and failure, unsure of what it even wants to be.

In trying to capture the best of both worlds, Resident Evil Village is a game of two halves. And they are equally hindered by their jarring differences and incompatible foundations.

Resident Evil Village is a good — but not exceptional — middle ground between the action-oriented RE4 and the horror thrills of RE7.

Walking away from Resident Evil Village leaves me with mixed feelings. It wasn’t a game that I immediately disliked, and I can’t say that I didn’t have a lot of fun playing it. But a second playthrough made me more aware of pacing issues, and on harder difficulties the general spike that otherwise feels somewhat artificial.

Resident Evil Village may not quite live up to the highs of its terrifying predecessor but it's a still a solid entry in the long-running series that's well worth checking out. Eastern Europe makes for a fantastically atmospheric and surprisingly open setting here, it's chock full of delightfully oddball characters and features a handful of properly entertaining set-pieces to blast through. There may well be a few rough edges, with a rather painful protagonist and some duff boss battles to contend with but, overall, this is one truly messed up village that's well worth a visit.

Resident Evil: Village is an excellent continuation of the mainline Resident Evil series that pays homage to Resident Evil 4 while showcasing its own style and identity. The first-person perspective allows for some truly terrifying moments (though a third-person mode is also on the way in the Winters' Expansion DLC) and the boss encounters are some of the best in the entire series. Of course, running via the cloud means you'll likely come across some hiccups, along with some dodgy load times and potential slowdown. Our experience with this was pleasantly minimal compared to other cloud versions we've played, but be sure to test the demo for yourself. If you've only got access to a Switch, this is a pretty solid way to experience a great game.

Interesting things and scenes, yes without a doubt, but this RE8 is too irregular to rise even to the level of RE7.

A competent but uninspired sequel that's unwise to create so many obvious comparisons to Resident Evil 4, although it still manages to find some memorable moments of its own.

A strong start and okay finish makes this average out as decent but not amazing installment.

Capcom hits another positive note with Resident Evil Village, with a great premise and setting which are only let down by fewer scares than RE7 and the story's drastic turns towards the latter half.

The 8th chapter in the Resident Evil franchise is a missed opportunity. While the game has some amazing environments and a great story, the gameplay goes away from the horror and survival style of the series to embrace more action-oriented features. The game is also a bit too easy and the puzzles aren’t that great.

Village is a more action-focused evolution of Resident Evil VII. The combat is dynamic, the exploration is rewarding and its visuals can be stunning. Even though the game overstays its welcome and it doesn't improve on every aspect of the series, I'd still call it one of the best Resident Evil games yet.

undefined. For all the game's problems, though, it provides some truly excellent moments that I'll remember for a long time. I shouldn't be shocked that a major AAA game like Village would fall into AAA traps, but there's something special about Village that felt like it could escape the franchise's own sordid past and deliver something as revolutionary-if not more-than RE7. But, like all things camp, maybe we'll reevaluate the game's banality in a decade or two; Village might be a cult oddity in good time.
