As a project developed by a group of recently graduated game developers, Mail Mole is worthy of praise. It runs well on the Switch, it’s mostly devoid of bugs, and its character design is quite cute. Sadly, it’s a generic platformer with a very simple premise and forgettable level design.

Mail Mole might not necessarily win any awards for originality, but it still offers a fun platforming escapade that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy. It absolutely nails all of the basics throughout and even introduces its own ideas with the digging and jumping, whilst the 60fps frame rate keeps the action feeling silky smooth too. The presentation could be a little underwhelming and you won’t see anything that you haven’t seen before in similar titles in the genre, but it doesn’t stop Mail Mole from being an entertaining 3D platformer overall.

For anyone who is passionate about platform games like me, Mail Mole is a good choice. The title brings the most basic concepts of the genre and is nothing innovative, but offers fun for a few hours with its creative level design. Technical issues and lack of polish hinder the experience, and a possible low budget is not a justification for this. The game does not stand out among the latest releases of platform games, however it is enjoyable by both fans and those who just want to relax with an easy and short title.

Its only real failing is that these ideas could benefit from being pushed further. Repeated concepts with only minimal iteration can make the mid game a bit slow. That being said it still represents a surprisingly original 3D platformer whose concepts I'd love to see taken even further.

If you’re a fan of 3D platformers, then Mail Mole is definitely worth your time. It’s no Super Mario Odyssey or Super Lucky’s Tale, but it hits plenty of the same notes, offering a fun and inoffensive adventure that’ll provide several hours of entertainment. Plus, considering its budget price ($15/£12.50), most of its missteps can be forgiven. And who doesn’t love a mole in a fancy hat?

Mail Mole is a 3D platform game that plays a lot like Super Mario 3D World... perhaps too much. Still, it has a good collection of rich levels, and a simple but likeable style. If you want to beat every mark, it is a considerable challenge.
