Lust from Beyond: M Edition dives deep into the twisted realm between terror and pleasure. It may not be the most challenging journey the shock of exploring this dangerous landscape leaves a significant impression. You'll have to endure some comedic voice acting and stale combat but uncovering the secrets within Lust from Beyond: M Edition is well worth the journey.

Lust from Beyond is one of those few games that can eventually gain cult status thanks to an interesting story ideas and shocking themes, even for a modern player.

But looking past those things, and into the vale reveals a game bucking trends and showcasing what's truly capable in our medium. A bigger budget, more player-agency and a more expansive world are all that's holding this back from being groundbreaking. And a lot of learnings will be taken from this latest outing.

Lust From Beyond is definitely not for the faint of heart or for the weak stomached but it is an interesting dive into the realms of the occult and insanity that can appear especially when dealing with the likes of H.P. Lovecraft, H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. Interesting puzzles, crazier environments and even more psychotic cultists and monsters trying to hunt you down, there’s a hell of an adventure to be had if you’ve got the stomach, and the age, for it.

Taking inspiration from Lovecraft, Giger and Beksinski, Lust from Beyond lures you in with hints of erotic exploration... mixed with psychological horror.

"Lust from Beyond" spreads sexual desire throughout the game and reveals it clearly, evoking fantasies about sex. However, the game is not just pornography, it shows a higher level of Cosmic Horror in Lovecraft style. The dreary, dense expression of fear and bizarre design influenced by 'HR Giger' increase the immersion level of the game. But, the movement is very stiff, like a piece of wood, and the puzzle is clumsy and uncomfortable. In addition, it is difficult to play for a long time due to even more dizzy screen transitions than 3D VR.

Lust from Beyond is not especially a bad game, but it contains so many bugs, technical issues and dull mechanics that it will only be enjoyed by players who are enthusiasts of this genre.

There is actually a decent amount of effort put in here even if it all didn’t land well with me. I did really enjoy the sections with Lusst’ghaa and the erotic sex parts didn’t seem over the top. In fact, the gore sections are what I thought could be toned down on. A lot of those sections felt like forced shock value and that type of horror doesn’t gel with me as well.

Lust from Beyond is a more-than-average first person adventure dealing with difficult topics, such as psychiatric diseases, sexuality and the very idea of a cult based exclusively on physical pleasure. It does so by building an almost convincing narrative structure, without skimping on the crude representation of sex and violence, managing to maintain a difficult balance with all the other components of the game. The technical quality, however, is fluctuating, with 3D models that seem to come out of some game 20 years ago, animations at the limit of decency and sudden "coughs" of the script.

"I'd definitely come back to check on a sequel but it would be out of wary curiosity, not excitement. Still, I think a lot more can be done in this space and hope to see the Lust franchise continue to flourish and evolve something special come from it in the future."

Lust From Beyond is a difficult title to review. On one hand, there are a variety of technical issues and design limitations, likely due to budget constraints, that make the game look dated. However, there is a nice variety of content and areas throughout the game and the story is deep and robust. The game is linear, but there are moments when it doesn’t feel linear – and there are some choices you can make that do impact certain outcomes. It’s rare that a game can create an adventure, filled with sex and nudity, without it feeling like it’s just about the sex and nudity.

It is difficult to give a numerical value to a game like Lust From Beyond, because I can’t rate it on how hard the developers worked, how much effort they put into the designs, or the potential that the series has for future instalments. As it is, I feel that a 7 out of 10 is appropriate, for a game that is intriguing despite its flaws, and on the right track also not forgetting it's relatively low price. Here is to seeing what this promising and talented team of developers can bring us in the future.

Lust from Beyond offers all that the first game in the series did and includes some new mechanics, bigger levels and all that on a bigger budget. Another good entry to the horror adventure genre.

Since its first appearance on Kickstarter, Lust from Beyond drew the attention of horror fans with bold sexual themes. The trailers, which left little room for imagination—lecherous bodies, ready to offer themselves with screams of pleasure—gave the impression of a simple desire of hype. Now, let's find out if Movie Games met the expectations of its donors.

As bold, or unique the horror-meets-sex concept might be, the execution here is far from excellent… or great, or very good, to be honest. Lust from Beyond is a decent adventure, for sure, with a neat dose of Lovecraft in it as well. While it has its moments, it isn't really very effecting at being scary of discomforting, with the gameplay certainly being the least enjoyable aspect of it all. It's easy to find a lot worse in the realm of indie horror games, so if a big fan of the genre, do try it out if you get the chance to find it really cheap, just don't expect something that will stay with you for long.

Sex sells. Everybody knows that. I like to believe, however, that making it a theme of one’s game is more than a marketing decision. This is why I hoped Lust from Beyond would be a mature game with a gripping story based on sexual themes. Unfortunately, although there is so much potential, Lust from Beyond is nothing more than a clunky and poorly optimized horror with sex mini-games.

Blending survival horror gameplay with overt sexual themes and a cosmic horror story, Lust From Beyond isn’t a game for everyone and it knows that. It’s targeting a fairly specific audience, but if you fall into that audience, you’ll find a satisfying, compelling, and often macabre experience.
