Rather than developing new content and iterating on a finished product with the upcoming live service portion of the game, it feels like DICE will instead be playing catch-up. Hopefully when the game gets patched, the developers — and Battlefield players — will get to realize the ambitious initial vision for “Battlefield 2042.”

At a time when our money is so devalued, I certainly don't recommend BF 2042, which is a tracksuit bottoms, to anyone. I'm not saying you can't enjoy it, but the game's not over. It's obvious...

Battlefield 2042 is trying to be a distillation of what the first-person shooter genre has become in recent times, while also not committing to any single vision, let alone one that Battlefield can claim ownership of.

Portal and Hazard Zone save 2042 from being a real low point in the series, which has swapped iconic, high octane moments for needless scale, without filling in any of that space.

Battlefield 2042 has a strong core and has the potential to be one of the best games in the series. However, balancing quirks, performance issues, and some fundamental design decisions are holding it back from true greatness.

Perhaps because of the sudden enlightenment of EA and DICE, or because the players' voices are getting louder, this time Battlefield 2042 has surprised me far more than disappointed.

Overall, Battlefield 2042 is a complete package of a first-person shooter that many players will enjoy playing it. Thanks to the Portal mode, the game never disappoints you in delivering diverse game modes, and Hazard Zone is a new option to put more hours into Battlefield, especially for pro players.

Battlefield 2042 brings us an exciting experience from the future as well as from the past at the same time despite some of the problems you may face while playing, but you soon forget it when you integrate into the excellent gameplay phases.

There's a good game to be found within the Battlefield 2042 and fun to be had as the spectacle of Battlefield's signature gameplay is taken to new, more expansive heights, but it's marred by a handful of unsuccessful gameplay design changes, hurriedly implemented features and bugs at launch.

I wanted more for Battlefield 2042, and I wanted more for this new live service game. But with other glaring issues, I feel this might need to be somewhat avoided.

Overall, Battlefield 2042 is an excellent effort and filled with a ton of competitive multiplayer content at launch with much more planned in the near future. There are some technical issues such as respawns and visual bugs to sort out, and some game modes and specialists might need some tweaks, but DICE is off to a great start and Battlefield 2042 should likely be relevant and popular for years to come.

There is hope in me to resolve these issues to have a Battlefield 2042 of excellence, but it may be too late for those who do not have the patience to wait for better days.

In order to survive in the hotly contested multiplayer shark tank in the long term, DICE now has to optimize and expand the core pillars of "Battlefield 2042" step by step, eliminate bugs, further increase performance and server stability, and set a higher pace than was the case with "Battlefield V". If this succeeds, "Battlefield 2042" has a rosy future ahead of it. If, on the other hand, DICE loses sight of the concerns of the community, the tide could turn in a completely different direction.

Battlefield 2042 feels like it could become a cool game, but it’s tantalizingly out of reach today. There’s enough promise with the satisfying-when-it-works gunplay, large-scale chaos (that’s starting to feel more controlled over time), and fantastic legacy Battlefield content in Portal that I’ll stick around for a bit. It didn’t have to be this way, though.

Battlefield 2042 has disappointed me. I think it builds upon the older games but in a much more boring way. The maps are relentlessly mundane. They’re all flat ground with high concrete structures. You don’t get those claustrophobic choke points that Battlefield 1 had, or the creative problem solving that came from clever map design in Battlefield 4. The maps in 2042 just all feel the same, and I’m not keen on them at all.

Unfortunately, this goes deeper than a rocky launch. It’s hard not to be disappointed with this 2042 offering. You know when the devs said this is a game to “celebrate Battlefield”? They’ve stripped away some of the most fundamental elements of the series and added tornados and Wingsuits to make up for it. It’s Marketing 101. Explosions, tornados, and swooping helicopters look great. One day, they probably will be great. DICE is one of the best when it comes to post-launch patches - for better and for worse. But if you’re on the fence about buying Battlefield 2042, I would just wait.

Battlefield 2042 is DICE’s most average Battlefield yet, one that despite boasting two new modes to discover in Hazard Zone and Battlefield Portal, clearly forgot about the core of the experience. With some weird design decisions, plenty of bugs, and more crashes than a destruction derby; the future of Battlefield, this is not. It’s still fun, but we hoped for so much more.

Battlefield 2042 has the potential of becoming one the best first-person shooters available on Xbox in six months’ time — but the fact is that, as of today, it is not even among the best shooters being released this Holiday season.
