Although not the deepest diving pool, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is still entertaining enough to splash around in for a while. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is considerably better than just a cash grab game tied to a singular cultural event, but it’s not the gold medal winner of sports sims either. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with going home wearing a bronze medal.

Summer Olympics Tokyo 2020 is fun with a group of friends and family, but there is very little reason to pick up the controller if you are going to be playing alone. Fun customization options allow a great deal of weirdness, and the wide variety of minigames offer breezy fun without a ton of depth. Lower your expectations, invite some buddies over, and you'll likely have a good time.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a good game that features a variety of good-to-decent events and a wonderful ability to play alongside friends. The inconsistency of the game's design with controls and the difficulty arc that spikes hurt the game but aren't dealbreakers.

Taken for what it is, Tokyo 2020 works well enough to carve a niche for itself as a surprisingly fun and easy to pick-up multiplayer game for families and parties.

It's easy to see how a fan of past Olympics games could be put off by Tokyo 2020, but if you're willing to lean into its arcade tendencies, you can have a lot of fun with it. The games are enjoyable for the most part, the presentation is great, and there's enough depth to keep you playing longer than just a few rounds of each sport. It certainly won't be for everyone, but SEGA's willingness to be bold and divert away from the simulation-heavy focus of previous Olympics games makes Tokyo 2020 a refreshingly memorable competitor that deserves some attention.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is fine. It would've been nice to get some of the events from the Mario & Sonic series ported over to make this feel more robust compared to Sega's older Olympics titles, but what's here plays well enough if you don't mind some quirks - especially with the team games. The focus on multiplayer is warranted, since that's how the general public will approach it, but it would've been nice if there were more for the solo player to do. If you're looking for a party game and not a serious multi-discipline sports simulation, this isn't a bad choice.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is fun, especially when played with a friend. While some events aren’t as engaging as others, there’s enough variety here that everyone will find something they can enjoy or excel at. The huge range of outfits available to unlock gives completionists a reason to keep going back, but most players will find this best enjoyed in short bursts.

You can feel Sega's spirit everywhere in this arcade Olympics simulator, and even though the 18 different included sports doesn not offer much gameplay depth, it's still super fun to play especially if you can hook up with some other players online.

Although it looks low budget and the events are about half of what they were in the last Official Video Game of the Olympics around a decade ago, this is still a fun experience specially in co-op.

Ditching the simulation-heavy gameplay of previous Olympic games is a smart move that creates a more enjoyable experience, especially in multiplayer, but there's still a lack of lasting replay value.

If you have friends to play with regularly, I think this Tokyo 2020 is a great option for you, despite inconsistent event quality. There are enough good ones to have a great time, and you can make your own playlists to avoid the bad. For others, though, this is a more difficult recommendation. The single-player modes can be plenty fun, but there’s a lot of sitting around to get to those bursts of enjoyment, and its simplistic nature likely won’t hold your attention for long. I wish I could be confident the online modes will provide a way to keep the fun going, but early signs aren’t favorable. This is the sort of game I once called a great rental. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 may not win the gold, but at the right price, it could squeak out a bronze.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is an accessible game with an impressive array of sporting events for all ages to enjoy. While it might not be the deep-dive some are looking for, it serves as an enjoyable title to pick up and play with friends or younger members of the household.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game, like most titles focusing on so many completely different gameplay loops and styles, falls short on truly delivering in any of them. The sheer variety of the twenty different sports presented, the rush of adrenaline of some of the shorter modes, solid online performance, and good presentation makes it a pleasant enough title for fans of the world's most famous torch.

This Olympics compilation may be bare bones, but collects its medals by focusing on accessibility and solid gameplay.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games fails to revive the glories of the multi-event classics of the past. The development team's surprising choice in disciplines didn't pay off, with so many events lacking in appeal and quickly becoming boring. There are definitely successful moments (athletics, swimming) and with friends you can spend some pleasant hours, but in the long run there are no real reasons to keep playing and winning gold medals.

That's really the biggest failing of Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - it can't stand up to its own Mario-themed competition. It's difficult to see why anyone with a Nintendo Switch would lean towards this official game over its mascot-filled counterpart. Both games accomplish their goals as fun party games featuring arcade-y recreations of a handful of sports. Outside of loading it up with friends, the biggest fun in this particular game comes in exploring the character creator and seeing someone's uncle win the Gold in the hammer throw. It's a toss-up whether that's more enjoyable than watching Mario and his frenemy Wario's perfect equestrian jumps on a real horse, but there's definitely something here for people who fall into the former camp.

‎Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: The official video game does its homework half-heartedly: it deprives us of some essential Olympic sports and others do not have the necessary quality.‎
