No More Heroes 3 is at its best when you're slicing your way through alien invaders, but the rest of the game wrapped around the energetic combat is a laborious disappointment.

First two No More Heroes games weren't perfect, however, they were at least fun to play. No More Heroes 3 is just a boring game with sponge enemies and dead open world. And, to be honest, repeating the same joke for the third time doesn't work at all.

Despite wearing its influences on its sleeve—Travis drives a facsimile of Kaneda’s bike from Akira and can transform into a Gundam rip-off—No More Heroes III shows no respect for the artistry or cultural context of the pop culture that it pilfers from. In fact, Given its alternately snarky, nihilistic, and condescending opinions of just about everything, you would be justified in feeling that the game doesn’t just dislike the things that it references but even itself.

Despite its flaws, No More Heroes III is a worthwhile addition to the series. With the performance issues that distracted on Switch now a thing of the past, and the best combat that the series has produced to date, No More Heroes III is capable of providing an overload of gorgeous, chaotic fun. With combat this good, it’s a shame that the rest of the package feels so woefully outdated at times. By relying so heavily on past gimmicks and humor, No More Heroes III becomes a recommendation for die-hard fans only, rather than something that could have had a more widespread appeal had some more efforts been made to modernize the experience.

If you loved the previous games, you’ll love this. However, it doesn’t offer anything new to improve on the series’ flaws, meaning anyone who isn’t a devotee may want to try the original first to see if its quirky, sharp-tongued style is for them.

Going even more retro is fine too, whenever No More Heroes III dips into EGA and CGA monochrome computing for little story vignettes it's always captivating.

If this really is Suda51’s last major venture with Travis Touchdown, then it’s a passing ending for the “passing assassin.” There’s no re-invention here – if you got a kick out of the earlier games, then there is plenty for you to enjoy this time around. It might get a little stale as you fight a group of enemies in a Designated Fight for the umpteenth time, but at least you’ll look stylish doing it. If No More Heroes has never been your cup of wrestling-inspired ultraviolence, well, best move along then.

No More Heroes III is radical, punk and messy experience with a unique personnality that wil indeed please players who have been seduced by the first episodes on Wii - despite theirs flaws that are stil those of this third game. 10 years have passed since No More Heroes 2, and as many games have successfully been walking on the same path, breaking codes and brilliantly combining content and form, it's suprising that Suda 51 did not give more scope to his title to sublime its personnality.

With that said, I'm glad we have No More Heroes 3. This is Suda51 to a tee: a wonderful and utterly ridiculous celebration of otaku culture and the series he's built up over the years. Travis' fourth-wall-breaking smart mouth makes me smile incessantly, despite how stupid it can be - and it can be very stupid indeed.

No More Heroes 3 is the latest game by director Suda51 for the Nintendo Switch. While the game has a colorful cast of characters and a unique style, it suffers from repetitive gameplay.

No More Heroes III is a hugely mixed bag with loads of fantastic boss fights, but an atrocious open world that lets it down.

A better game than the earlier spin-off but Travis Touchdown's time is clearly over, even if he is still able to provide some entertainingly odd boss battles.

No More Heroes 3 is an amusing but extremely uneven sequel, with its entertaining bosses separated mostly by poor performance and barebones tedium.

No More Heroes 3 is a title that I've been waiting for a long time, but it didn't live up to expectations. It's a game that shows great potential, but never commits to fully realizing them, resulting in an experience that is unique but unsatisfying.

Even the game's style and technical performance are wildly inconsistent between the sublime combat and sterile overworld. It feels half-baked in the most literal sense, with one half being cooked to perfection, and the other half still cold from the freezer. I just can't shake the feeling that I'm the one doing something wrong, because I'm just not sure how a game can be so incredibly good, and yet so very bad.

Removing everything that does not work and that is there to do "longevity", we would have had 5 sensational hours of pure videogame exploitation that we would have been ready to glorify as a cult. But the reality is that Suda51's new work for Nintendo Switch is the shadow of the No More Heroes that was, where brilliant ideas, follies, memorable moments and the same brutal combat system are watered down in a mediocre and rhythmless techno-playful context.

No More Heroes 3 is the perfect example of a medicore video game. It delivers a fun combat and interesting boss fights but also suffers from disappointing side missions, repetitive main missions and an empty world. If you are a fan of old school Hack & Slash games, give it a try, otherwise there are other games that deserve your money!

No More Heroes 3 has moments of pure genius and a lot of fresh and brave gameplay ideas, but is technical disaster that even the hardcore fans can't stand.
