New World might be the first ever MMORPG in my two decades of playing these titles that made me hit a wall and go “Yeah – this isn’t fun, I’m out.” That’s saying something, considering I’ve reviewed both TERA and Bless Unleashed.

High-stakes PvP battles and top-notch production values bolster Amazon's MMORPG, even if its PvE content and occasionally frustrating systems may leave some players wanting.
New World is off to a rocky start, but if Amazon can right the ship and address real player concerns, it has the chance to be something really special. But right now, it’s an okay experience overall that leaves me wanting more in order to stick around.

New World is a fun, solid MMORPG packed with plenty of enjoyable content that will keep players busy for a long, long time. New World’s ideas come across as very solid, but the more I’ve engaged with it, the more I see problems. Those problems have nothing to do with the foundation of New World, however. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with New World besides the economy and lack of main missions, and only the former can destroy the game. The rest of the issues can be fixed with time and enough attention to the details.
Amazon Studios hasn't got off to a bad start with New World, but they still have a long way to go.

Has New World resurrected the glory days of the MMO? Not quite yet, but it’s the biggest step to revitalizing the MMORPG genre in a decade. Should Amazon Games make bold and intelligent decisions with their ongoing game development, then they could do it. And even if they can’t do it alone, alongside upcoming games like AoC and Pantheon, a new golden age could soon be upon us. And hey, who are we to turn down a menage-a-trois or an open marriage? It’s 2021, baby.
Amazon has done a decent job with New World with its exquisite visuals and overall environment. They just need to smooth out those rough edges and implement some mounts!
New World could be presented as a gateway to MMOs (“My First MMO,” if you will). The simplistic combat may entice those who have been overwhelmed by the busy hotbars of games like Final Fantasy XIV. The many allusions to survival games also provide an easy way to integrate those new to the genre. But I don’t believe everything on offer here is going to pull anyone away from the titan MMOs still holding their thrones. New World is at its best when you wander into the dense forests and toil away endlessly with the (arguably therapeutic) gathering portion of the game. Those pork chops and apple sauce meals won’t cook themselves, after all.
New World has the mechanical foundations of a decent MMO, with passable combat and good visuals, but its hopes are extinguished at the hands of dreadful PvE design. The few distinctive experiences that it does have, locked away behind high levels as if the game knows it has precious little to offer, are not worth the hours of mind numbing grind to get there.
I can’t recommend New World to anyone who isn’t already 100% invested in the idea of faction politics and PvP, but there’s a solid foundation here. Give it an expansion or two, and this could turn into something truly special.
At the time of writing, I can happily say that Amazon’s new foray into the world of massively multiplayer role-playing is a tentative success.
I thoroughly enjoyed New World. I wish there was more guidance in some areas in-game, and the game does seem geared towards PvP rather than PvE. Despite these minor gripes, the game is incredible.
New World is not a paradise for all comers by any means. It's an escape for those willing to put up with some oddly misbalanced elements to get a taste of some really excellent PvP encounters. If you have a guild ready to grind out results and become kind of the mountain then New World is worth a look.
New World's engaging crafting and faction rivalries are held back by abysmal PvE and a boring world.
New World arouses extreme emotions, but one thing undeniably does well – it perfectly uses the aspects of MMO and in this respect outclasses many rivals. However, it is a pity that some elements limp, which makes the game from Amazon extremely uneven and incomplete.

New World is a rare MMORPG that can properly immerse itself in the 'role play', the essence of RPG. However, too poor PVE content, low-capacity servers, and mistakes in live services compared to well-designed PVP systems make the game overshadow its advantages.
