Back 4 Blood isn’t Left 4 Dead 3, but it is so evidently an evolution of the genre. When things go right and you have a deck that works for your build, plus the Game Director doesn’t screw you over with the corruption cards, then the game feels amazing to play. Far more often than not however, you’ll be left frustrated and tilted because too many enemies have spawned so there was literally nothing you could do. Back 4 Blood is the best multiplayer zombie game on the market right now, but the competition is weak and if you’re a solo player, steer well clear.

At its best, Back 4 Blood offers a ton of variety to keep you and your friends interested for a long time. Even returning to levels you’ve already played gets interesting thanks to different cards, which can make major differences in how things play out. If you have three friends to play the whole game with, I highly recommend it. That its available as a Game Pass title is awesome because you can get a group of friends together without them all having to buy the game. If you don’t have that group though, a poorly balanced solo mode and issues with matchmaking will sink this one for most.

There are plenty of reasons why Back 4 Blood could be around for years as Turtle Rock adds additional content to the game, but I hope they start by tweaking what's here. The difficulty, for this type of game, feels wrong. Back 4 Blood is meant to be fun with friends, and although I'm all for the challenge and reliance on communication with your teammates, the higher difficulties are sadistic.

If you have a squad of like-minded buddies ready to lose many an evening to slaying some zombie infested hordes, Back 4 Blood will provide you plenty to satisfy that urge. It doesn’t quite capture the greatness of its forebears and it stumbles over itself with its erratic difficulty curve and repetitive nature, but Back 4 Blood has immensely satisfying, if simplistic, gameplay mechanic. This is a veteran, war-torn survivor who’s maybe danced this bloody dance once too many times, but it knows damn well how to deliver that co-op fun.

Back 4 Blood has many frustrating moments with its numerous hordes and unbalanced difficulty spikes. Besides, it's quite repetitive and has a weak story. Its card system only starts to get more interesting after practically finishing the campaign at least once. In the end, Back 4 Blood is only suitable for those looking for a cooperative experience and who would overlook the points mentioned.

Overall, Back 4 Blood is a good experience of a survival-driven shooter game and zombie killing.

As a cooperative shooter, Back 4 Blood is not bad. But as it is, bland maps, awkward progression and controversial design decisions make it a game for only a couple of evenings.

Back 4 Blood is one of those games that you don’t have to particularly worry about grinding, which is incredibly refreshing. Between grinding for in-game currency for dungeon gear in FFXIV, and trying to level up my weapons in Dauntless, it’s nice to have a game I can jump back into with my friends at any point in time and just play. It’s fast-paced, creative, and just all-around good fun. What’s not to love? The game has been out for a while, but that just means that the developers have had more time to listen to feedback and start fixing some of those bugs that have been bothering players.

Back 4 Blood manages to recapture much of the magic Turtle Rock Studios crafted more than a decade ago.

I don’t think I’ll revisit Back 4 Blood in a decades’ time the same way I do with Left 4 Dead now, but it does a good enough job at modernising the formula for better or worse.

Back 4 Blood is unquestionably a fun multiplayer zombie killfeast but its card system is a bit light on the novelty side of things, and we can't hlep feeling that the game is still a bit of a Left 4 Dead 3.

Turtle Rock's Back 4 Blood is tough as nails and has some minor annoyances, but it's a refreshingly complete and competent multiplayer experience.

If you can give Back 4 Blood a chance, then eventually the game will open up as a fun and original 4-player co-op based shooter.

Back 4 Blood still comes out as the best Left 4 Dead-inspired game in recent memory, taking the core design and innovating on it just enough to keep everything fresh and fun. Where Back 4 Blood gets things right, it does them really well, but where it doesn’t is often quite obvious.

In Back 4 Blood, we have been given a finely tooled zombie shooter, but it lacks the power of the original.

Back 4 Blood is brilliant, co-op fun, with an interesting card system, but it's marred by terrible bots, awkward solo campaign choices, and a lackluster PvP mode.

It's a no-brainer to at least check out as it's on Game Pass, but poor controls on console serve as a great detriment to what otherwise can be a really fun time.

Back 4 Blood is simply a game that possesses endless fun for you and your peers. Although, it does have a few flaws; it doesn’t take away from the very exciting gameplay that simply makes Back 4 Blood worthy of purchasing.

With a bloody comeback, Turtle Rock Studio was able to turn Back 4 Blood into a decisive and viable replacement for Left 4 Dead, which despite the problems in the Solo and PvP sections, is still commendable work and brings you breathtaking and exciting moments. And it brings your friends.
