There’s no question in my mind that Elden Ring is a great game, and an early leading contender for game of the year. The pertinent question may be "how great?", and that’s a little tougher to answer.

Elden Ring is one the the best games ever released, raising quickly to our personal top of favorite games of all time. The game manages to evolve the Souls-style combat formula, while introducing an immaculate open world whose exploration is a first-minute to last-minute pleasure. Truly an experience accessible to new players, but without losing sight of the world famous "punishing game" label. Those who will invest their time and patience in learning its deep mechanics, find here an experience nothing short of perfection and that deserves all and any praise.

Elden Ring, with its enchanting world full of secrets, explorations, elaborate and varied gameplay, is the most thought-provoking game and certainly the epitome of Fromsoftware's expertise.

Elden Ring stays true to its strange and obtuse controls and UI, but blows the subgenre wide open for both veterans and newcomers.

From Software just released a new update which includes more Smithing Stones dropped and can be purchased, stronger shields, which I agree will help newcomers immensely. They have also changed some of the gameplay balancing, but remain tight-lipped as to what they have done. In this regard then and despite all my earlier ranting can I recommend Elden Ring? Yes, definitely. It's a much more interesting title than previous games in the series and in my view a step in the right direction. But...and this is the caveat here, a lot of the older combat systems remain despite improvements which means expect tons of frustrating moments which requires perseverance in buckets. Or do what I do, rage quit, rant, then come back later and try again. Honestly, that is the best way to approach these games.

Elden Ring is the most fun I've had with a video game in years. I went into the game expecting to have a bit of fun and came out 100 hours later craving more. If you've been on the fence with the Souls series, there really is no better time to jump in.

Elden Ring is absolutely exceptional and I honestly believe it's an industry-defining moment as it will have a massive effect on how other developers approach open-world game design. FromSoftware has done it again!

Elden Ring remains a compelling experience thanks to its incredible breadth and scope combined with its excellent combat and litany of options for curating your own unique journey. Is it a massive change from the Dark Souls formula? Honestly, you can name it Dark Souls 4 and it would actually fit quite well. At the same time, it represents the best iteration of the Souls formula to date as well as the potential of the series moving forward. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m dying to hop back and play it again.

All things considered, Elden Ring is a crowning achievement for FromSoftware but also for gaming. It takes the overused open world formula and flips it with a focus on exploration and freedom. It eliminates those limiting markers and quest objectives which every game since The Witcher 3 has used and that have really dampened the open world formula. For a game all about tradition, with its fantasy aesthetic and kings or rulers, it is amazing that Elden Ring breaks the mold and tradition by making such a compelling and intriguing experience. Once the bugs have been ironed out, there is no doubt in my mind that Elden Ring will be looked upon as one of the best games ever created despite the difficulty. It will be looked upon as a genre defining classic.

The grandiose world of Elden Ring looks great, but is filled with monotonous content. FromSoftware does not even try to offer something new and just tramples on a familiar glade, where the Souls series has long settled.

Elden Ring is From Software's new action RPG, which puts a twist on the Soulsborne saga by including an open world and an open world map that encourages players to explore all the regions of the Midlands.

Elden Ring is Dark Souls done in an accessible way and given the open world afforded to Link in Breath of the Wild. In short, it's fabulous.

It’s a rare thing for me that a game so completely sweeps me up in it that I still find that same hunger for more than a good 80 hours in. Elden Ring achieves that. I’m already envisioning future playthroughs with different builds. Sure there are small grievances. Co-op with friends could be a bit easier to instigate, a sturdier frame rate wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, and as expected, there are a few bullshit boss fights that end up more like manufactured obstacles than true tests of your skills. These really do end up as small fry issues though. There’s just too much dark wonder and bleak beauty to savor.

When I look back on my time with Elden Ring, it will be remembered extremely fondly. The genius minds over at FromSoftware have actually outdone themselves here. A project so bold in scope and ambition does not really have the right to deliver on its promises. Yet, despite a couple of minor inconveniences, that is exactly what Elden Ring does. A new bar has been set for the open-world genre, and everyone else has been forced to sit up and take notice. If you haven’t been a fan of FromSoftware’s previous titles, you are unlikely to have your mind changed here. But for everyone else, either veterans of the Souls series or newcomers who have never tried these games, you absolutely owe it to yourselves to experience this game.

You will enjoy this game if you can stomach the abuse that Elden Ring dishes out. Even if you cannot, there is so much out there that you can do if you aren't afraid of running from scary fights. Some locations can be less fun than others, and some bosses create skill-based stopgaps. Elden Ring is all about picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and sometimes finding something more enjoyable to do. It's worth the investment.

The phrase "one of the greatest games of all time" was thrown around a lot at launch. I thought it might be an exaggeration, but I stand corrected. Elden Ring absolutely earns the badge of one of the best games ever made.

Elden Ring is an unrelenting, engrossing, challenging, and marvelous experience. It brings the Dark Souls formula to an open world setting without skipping a beat, with all of its cryptic nature, punishing combat and wondrous level design. It's still not for everyone, but those who dare enter this realm may find themselves in one of the best games of the year.
