Near-perfect at everything it does, but wisely limits its remit. A great conversion.

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series has been a staple of the action-adventure genre since the release of its first instalment in 1997. Many main series titles, spin-offs and expansions have released since, including the ever continuously releasing Grand Theft Auto V, which doesn’t seem to stop appearing on new platforms. With Grand Theft Auto VI now finally confirmed to be in development, there is no better time to catch up on the series if you’re interested in giving it a try.

It is unknown whether Grove Street Games worked on quality assurance at all or whether the studio actually bothered to patch out some bugs, but that is most certainly not how it seems. All games in the collection have lazily been ported from their mobile counterparts by a company who has seemingly never worked on other platforms before. All games have furthermore been given a remaster treatment so shockingly bad, they have somehow recessed and now look and play worse than any kind of emulated version ever would; and the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise, as masterful and great as it is, will now forever be marred by incompetence — let alone three classics forever disrgraced in such a way. There is no argument that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is an abhorrent mess, and an incredibly disappointing one at that.

Even if all the technical problems are corrected, the new version is considered inferior

It is impossible not to classify this offer as disappointing. There is merit in the work of making these classics more visually appealing and mechanically more modern, but the flaws are too many and incomprehensible. The three games are technically extremely defective, with huge crashes and numerous bugs plaguing the overall experience. Still, playing Vice City and San Andreas remains incredibly fun and enjoyable. So there is value here, but these games deserved much more love and affection from everyone involved.

A disappointing revisit to something fondly remembered, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition struggles to remind you of what made these games so memorable in the first place.

I cannot currently recommend Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition on the PC, and a lot has to happen until I do. The truth is that I've had a decent amount of fun with this remaster; part of it is based on nostalgia, and part of it is based on some ridiculous, unavoidable bugs that weren't as frequent as I'd feared. Given all of these issues and the abysmal performance of the three games on the PC, I'd stay away from the trilogy until several major updates have been released. Even then, this remaster may not be for everyone.

This trilogy oscillates between moving nostalgia and the disappointment of remembering the weight of the years.

Overall, we wanted to like Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition but a lack of updated graphics, gameplay bugs, bad weather, and crashes detracted from the experience. Although you could restart a mission if you failed, you would have to choose between losing your progress or jumping back into the mission without a break. Sometimes, losing your weapons and armor feels better than having to redo the same missing again and again. There were numerous occasions where something would go slightly wrong and we’d have to start from scratch. If Rockstar decides to update the game and do it justice, then it will be worth picking up. Otherwise, we would highly recommend skipping the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. If you are interested in playing The Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, we’d recommend waiting until it goes on sale. A 2GB update has been released to fix multiple bugs within the GTA Trilogy.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition was set to be one of this year's biggest and most celebrated releases. Unfortunately, due to multiple questionable decisions by those involved in the project, what we received was a collection that did little to deserve the nickname “definitive” registered in its name.

The three classic GTAs are still fun, but deserved a better remasterization, with greater care from Rockstar Games and without musical cuts.

Despite its entertaining nature, GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is disappointing. While there are much better graphics mods, it gives the impression of an unnecessary package with its bugs.

Overall, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was set up to be one of the best things for GTA fans and it failed to hit that mark. It will now be remembered as a failure to launch title but I am sure Rockstar will step in and continue to fix some items within their game world. Released on November 11, 2021, this trilogy is listed at 59.99 USD and is available for all current and next-gen consoles and on PC as well. I hope for some updates soon. The games are playable but not as you remember them.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition can be tolerable on the right system. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X offer users the best chance of brute-forcing past the performance barriers but, even then, occasional bugs and glitches can occur. Fun can be had on those current-gen systems, especially by those with some sentimental attachment to the original trilogy, but there’s still likely to be moments of frustration. When it comes to the Nintendo Switch version, as enjoyable as a portable version could be, the experience is heavily compromised and I can’t recommend players drop serious cash on this product.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition is a lazy attempt at bringing three classic games into the modern era. Visually inconsistent, riddled with bugs and below par in so many other areas, the only thing this collection has going for it is nostalgia and solid foundations.

‎GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition brings all the fun of the classic games of the saga that has always seen its career ascend. However, it shows a hard fall with this remaster due to lack of work in its execution.‎

If you're looking for a trip down memory lane, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition can definitely give you a hit of nostalgia that you have been looking for. Once those rose-tinted glasses begin to fall away from your face, though, what you'll be left with is a bundle of three remastered Grand Theft Auto titles that are really starting to feel their age. Even if you still find great enjoyment in these titles from the dawn of the open-world gaming era, the other bugs and lingering problems will surely begin to rip you out of the experience. In simplest terms, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a mess of a release and isn't anything close to the level of quality that we have come to expect from the Rockstar Games name in the past.

There's an old saying that goes "You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter". Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is almost the exact opposite of that proverb, with the core foundation of the three titles still retaining their charm, albeit in an anachronistic way, but the sterling gold nugget that is the original trilogy is now slathered in so many scoops of steaming shit that it's hard to appreciate them for what they are.

Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are one of the best games of all time and they deserved an opportunity to shine again, which was tragically and shamefully missed here.
