Unlike the usual copy and paste of surviving a post-apocalyptic world, the game is more focused on the individual survivors to come together and rebuild civilization from scratch. Since the platform of choice was to be on consoles, you’d have to be quite accustomed to exploring various menus and tabs with a controller to fully enjoy the experience. While the exploration segment may feel repetitive and unproductive, the immersive atmosphere that puts you up against responsibility was how it allows the players to stay concentrated.

There's a lot to like about Surviving the Aftermath and I became genuinely invested in the continued existence of my survivors, fighting and struggling with all I had to get them through the many hardships of living in a post-apocalyptic world. It's unfortunate that I was constantly forced to return to exploring the turn based world map, rather than having fun building stuff. Also, if you do decide to pick up Surviving the Aftermath, it's probably best to go for the PC version to avoid the contradictory brain-melting console controls.

Surviving the Aftermath doesn't utilize its dire post-apocalyptic setting as well as it could have, but those looking for an addictive, mechanically dense city builder/management sim will find a lot of enjoyment here.

In Surviving the Aftermath, players need to build a sustainable colony similar to Endzone: A World Apart. The storyline gives players a goal to work towards as they explore the world map and enhance their colony. Aside from the ineffective tutorial and tips section of the game, players can expect a fun city-building survival experience. At its core, Surviving the Aftermath is a high-stakes building game where the biggest challenge is making the right decisions in order to stay alive in a dangerous, apocalyptic world.

Surviving the Aftermath is a solid base game, with some questionable DLC. Core mechanics are well designed and while the game does have some issues, it offers just enough to make it worth picking up. There’s plenty to do and the game offers quite a bit of bang for your buck. My only issue, like with other players, lies with the DLC, which doesn’t quite integrate with the base game as well as it could have. Overall, this is a solid title with some interesting mechanics, and it’s well worth the price tag. I award Surviving the Aftermath the Thumb Culture Silver Award.
