FILMECHANISM feels like a classic puzzle platformer at its finest. It is impressive how many clever and genuinely difficult puzzles are in it just based around one simple mechanic; it truly pushes the concept's boundaries in the best of ways. Each world adds a new gimmick that makes the puzzles more complex and challenging, and the difficulty curve is done in such a way that almost anyone can beat the main game if they put their mind to it. While some quality-of-life features could improve the game, what is already present is a great experience and is a snapshot worth remembering.

FILMECHANISM is a game with a strong conviction in its own style and ideas. It’s a great little puzzle game, and something I’d urge any Switch owner to check out.

If you need a quick gaming fix, this is the go-to game. With its novel properties, detailed world map and just enough introduction time to get your gears warmed up, the game allows you to infinitely retry any failures and the wave of satisfaction is over the top once you clear the game’s well over 200 prepared maps. But the more you progress, the puzzle elements begin leaning towards requiring the players’ skills in their reactions and won’t let you skip some of the more annoyingly designed maps. If you’re not too confident in your hand-eye coordination, the game can somewhat become more of a drainer than it should be.

What it lacks in an actual narrative, FILMECHANISM makes up for in everything else. With its addictive puzzles, simple yet thought-provoking mechanics, catchy soundtrack, and retro but modern 8-bit world, you have the complete package when looking for a 2D puzzle-action game.

It’s always great to see smart puzzle games that deliver play that hasn’t been run into the ground and that provide the opportunity to get some help when needed...
