While Gran Turismo gets a lot right, it also gets a lot wrong too. The microtransactions and insidious roulette gambling are absolutely disgusting and have no place in a “AAA” game. Oh, and that’s before mentioning the mandatory always-online connection too. Without them this would be an easy 7.5/10. If you can stomach the inherent flaws and don’t have a history of addictive tendencies, Gran Turismo 7 is a decent racing title on the track but it misses a podium finish by spinning out on the home stretch.

If you can suffer through the clunky menus, endless dull dialogue and 100 visits to the cafe, then there’s an excellent racing game somewhere hidden in Gran Turismo 7.

With incredible controller haptics and stunning graphics, Gran Turismo 7 is an incredibly immersive game on PlayStation 5 that suffers from some horrific microtransactions.

Gran Turismo 7 was a mixed experience. I love its car loving philosophy, giving us gearheads a playground to mess around with some of the most beautiful and powerful machines ever created. Sadly, for every aspect Polyphony has knocked out of the park, such as the quality of the models and the Music Rally mode, there was something else that made the overall package feel like a glorified PS3 racing game covered with a next-gen, ray-traced coat of paint.

Polyphony Digital has definitely succeeded in making a racing simulator that even a casual gamer can enjoy. It still has a few issues, but if you're willing to put some effort into your racing skills, the game can be enjoyable and satisfying.

For those looking for a dedicated simulation racer where you can spend hours tuning and practising to get the best out of the car and yourself, Gran Turismo 7 will no doubt appeal. But I don't think it's for racing game enthusiasts, it's for racing enthusiasts.

On PlayStation 5, Gran Turismo 7 shines because there is simply no competition. Against the background of the whole genre, however, it is a long overdue premiere of a slightly outdated game.

I said at the top of this review that Gran Turismo 7 does its best to straddle the gap between casual and hardcore racers. While it certainly does a great job of onboarding newcomers warmly, it does so at the risk of boring its more eager fanbase. That makes Gran Turismo 7 a difficult game to recommend unless you love cars and their culture with your whole heart.

When you’re in it and smashing around the track against expert AI or other players, this is where Gran Turismo 7 excels. All of the weirdness that Polyphony Digital has bolted on to this quality car game fades away into obscurity. But sadly, that’s not all this is. Instead, it’s a jumble of well-made car racing and strange design decisions, coupled with his tonally odd take on what it means to be a car nerd. For now though, Gran Turismo 7 is the best console racing game for the masses, at least until another contender comes along.

Gran Turismo 7 embraces the career mode and presents a whole new aesthetics for menus and competitions. Nevertheless, it is a game that refuses the modernity and chooses to be identical to the first GT in terms of IA inconsistency.

Gran Turismo 7 continues to go about its brand of racing simulation in a uniquely eccentric and elegant way. It looks and handles as great as ever, though there is not much novelty here to get excited about, and the always-online requirement remains unwarranted.

There are some misgivings to find within its design, on and off the track, but Polyphony's meticulous craftmanship handedly surpasses them.

Gran Turismo has always been an extremely special title, far removed from the racing games you normally play: a title with a soul and with so much attention to detail for what cars represent. From this point of view, evaluating a product like Gran Turismo 7 was extremely difficult, because on the one hand we have Yamauchi's love for cars, full of content, descriptions and customisations, but on the other hand we are faced with a game anchored to dated dogmas, which do not favour the playful part much, immersing us in a game context where the A.I. is not very far from that of nine years ago and damages are once again practically non-existent. To the rescue of the game, however, we have an online component that seems to be the true soul of the title, which together with a satisfying driving model, make Gran Turismo 7 a must have for those who have always loved the franchise Made in Japan. Polyphony Digital now has the task of supporting the title in the years to come, first of all trying to introduce the interesting A.I. Sophy and improving the game just like it did in the past with GT Sport. If it succeeds, we will be faced with one of the best sim/arcade ever, accessible to everyone and above all of enviable quality.

Gran Turismo 7 delivers some of the tightest driving a fan of the racing genre could ask for in a gorgeous package hampered by aggressive microtransactions and always online requirements.

GT7 is a must-have for anyone who loves racing games. It looks amazing and plays beautifully well. You can make it as easy or challenging as you would like it to make it enjoyable. Yes, I have brake zones and corner points showing but I haven’t learned the tracks very well yet!

So the question remains, is Gran Turismo 7 the Real Driving Simulator’s return to form? Truthfully, yes. It’s a fantastic soft reboot of the classic racer that has been dormant for too long, and was desperate for a refreshing take. While GT6 was met with a lukewarm response from gamers after being heralded by critics, it just couldn’t live up to the hype.

Gran Turismo 7 provides an excellent entry point to the series for players who are new to it. If the 7 in the title feels intimidating, you can let that go. Once you do, you’ll find a game that plays as well as any racing title on the market. Some strange choices along the way hold it back from racing perfection, but this is still a game that should keep PS5 racing fans busy for a long time.
