Distant Worlds 2 is a 4X for veterans of the genre, looking for a game to challenge all their management skills. CodeForce crafted a deep, complex strategy game, albeit one that doesn't concede anything to the modern age in terms of graphics and narrative.

Distant Worlds 2 is a vast 4X game built around a simulation, and you need to meet it in the middle. I can only partially recommend it. But I really do recommend it for that part.

Distant Worlds 2 is a rich space-based, real-time strategy experience that can provide hundreds of hours of fun to a dedicated fan. The writing and narrative aren’t interesting enough but the mechanics more than make-up for this weakness. The automation options are deep and make it easier to focus on certain aspects of the 4X concept, delegating the rest to a decent computer algorithm.

Though it may fall short of its predecessor, Distant Worlds 2 is laudable sequel to what I feel is one of the most enjoyable and unique 4x titles on the market. That’s a hard gig to follow and though there are plenty of balance-related issues and more optimization can be done and I imagine that were Distant Worlds 2 given the same 4-5 years post-launch that Distant Worlds: Universe had, I imagine Distant Worlds 2 could very well be a quintessentially perfect 4x experience.

For one of the few 4x space strategy games I’ve spent time in, Distant Worlds 2 is a decent game. It launched with a full trove of content and immense number of options to suit your playstyle. Overall it sticks to a basic formula that is safe but does not make it stand out above and beyond. It also sounds like there are some bugs that Code Force needs to iron out. Without having any prior bias from playing the previous game, I am giving Distant Worlds 2 the Thumb Culture Silver Award.
