When I typically think of Metroidvanias I've been conditioned a bit to the point that I assume the balance is usually more on the Castlevania influences in terms of style of play...

Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread is a 2D metroidvania that glimpses the end of «muscle cinema» and the formulaic nature of 80's action movies.

Blast Brigade is a difficult game to review. It's a lot of fun and we enjoyed our 20 or so hours with it, mopping up secrets and collectables. We can't recommend it enough if you've still got a hankering for Metroidvanias, but those exhausted with the formula aren't going to find any major deviations here. Perhaps we would feel differently had the game come out a couple of years ago, but now? Blast Brigade is still a terrific Metroidvania, and one of the best we've played outside of the very tippy-top tier (Symphony of the Night, et al). Get it straight away if you even slightly think you will enjoy it, because you almost certainly will. It has the same affection packed into it as the likes of Kaze and the Wild Masks, a real love letter to Metroidvanias. Truly exceptional it isn't, but Blast Brigade remains a great time if you're not suffering from genre fatigue.

Despite my gripes with pacing and some insane difficulty spikes when it comes to platforming, Blast Brigade is a true gem and a fantastic addition to the genre. The stellar presentation is a delightful send-up to 80’s action and Saturday morning cartoons, creating a Metroidvania that truly manages to feel unique despite being part of perhaps one of the most saturated genres in gaming. If like me, you’re a fan of tight gunplay, rewarding exploration, and things stuffed with 80’s charm, then you’ll likely consider Blast Brigade to be twenty hours of your time well spent.

It may not be a revolution but everything it does, it does it right, from the demanding and well crafted gameplay to the art style, along with the amazing boss fights, humorous dialogues and technical execution. Any fan of platformers as well as of Metroidvania-type of games will be more than satisfied with playing Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread.

Despite its problems, Blast Brigade is fun if you don't mind beating your head against the wall at times. While its linear nature doesn't always do a good job of scratching the Metroidvania itch, what's there is a solid action game with fantastic boss battles.

All of this comes together to make Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread a great little thing to play with a few particular aspects that hold it back and render it irritating. If some of those aspects could have been made slightly less annoying and repetitious, then the game could have been amazing. Still, as it stands, Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread is a fun game for those who want some Saturday morning cartoon action with a great run-and-gun metroidvania attached that will last them a good 15-18 hours.

Still, if you’re up for the challenge, we’d recommend you do give Blast Brigade a go. Thanks to its sumptuous art style, reminiscent of an action-packed cartoon, it feels wholly modern. But its classic side-scrolling sensibilities means it also packs in plenty of old-school charm. Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread has a wonderful world waiting for you to explore, and tonnes of upgrades and abilities to unlock. But you’re going to have to overcome some truly gruelling boss fights along the way.
