The Quarry is a good piece of cinematography and storytelling, lost in its medium of choice. The gameplay elements aren't particularly fun, nor worthwhile replaying. The cutscenes are good the first time around, but certainly get a bit grating the longer the game goes on. Standout performances from the actors certainly carry The Quarry, and it is worthwhile playing through the story at least once, but the second time around feels too much of a chore. The Quarry is the definition of a weekend rental.

Diving into The Quarry, we were expecting a suspenseful character-driven narrative based on experiences with other Supermassive Games titles. Needless to say, we got exactly that. The characters are relatable with each character’s personality resembling an aspect of at least one person we all know. Although the monster at Summer camp genre can be rather cheesy based on previous excerpts and adaptations in the genre. The game offers a variety of outcomes for the player to experience with over 100 possible variations.

A thrilling step back in time to the days of hormones and murder.

The performance is really good, the music matches the action quite well, and generally The Quarry leaves a very good feeling when the end credits roll.

In many ways, The Quarry is just as good as Until Dawn, which is a solid 8/10 in this reviewer’s eyes. However, the lack of narrative depth and meaningful choices, the annoying graphical glitches mentioned and a surprising lack of ways to kill characters until late on, hold this back from being an outstanding offering in this genre.

Generally these games have a ton of replay value given the various outcomes you can have but between the languid pacing and the frustrating lack option to skip dialogue or cutscenes it made the prospect of doing it all over one that I wasn’t interested in. There is a chapter select available once you’ve completed the game and a death rewind feature that allows you to basically use three lives per chapter to take back a death of a character which is cool, I guess. With Until Dawn Supermassive proved they know how to tell a good story with somewhat interesting characters and good pacing, which is all the more disappointing that their first proper follow up, The Quarry, comes up short on so many levels.Generally these games have a ton of replay value given the various outcomes you can have but between the languid pacing and the frustrating lack option to skip dialogue or cutscenes it made the prospect of doing it all over one that I wasn’t interested in. The Quarry is a fantastic adventure title as well as a cinematic marvel. It'll make you jump and squeal as you uncover the mysteries of Hacketts Quarry. With excellent QTEs and brilliant characters, you'll love every second of this creepy title.

A game that starts slowly and ends fast is The Quarry. The story it tells is very beautiful, the acting is very nice, the voice-overs are number ten, but it lags behind other Supermassive Games games in terms of gameplay elements.

If you have about 8 hours of free time, The Quarry will offer you a fun experience with a touch of typical teenage horror from Supermassive. Its excellent dialogues and great performances from the cast keep the player captivated throughout, even if the core story lacks the depth to the end. However, for their $70 price tag, I'll let the decision counter run out.

Although not doing much to change their working formula, The Quarry is the best game Supermassive Games has released since Until Dawn.

While The Quarry is by all means a decent game, it embraces being Until Dawn's shadow instead trying to step out of it.

The Quarry is an enjoyable and solid horror experience that didn’t quite dive into the genre I was hoping it would have tackled.

The Quarry is a gory, masochistic, and morally challenging bloodfest that will still leave some spine-tingling scars that will split audiences with their respective outcomes, and undoubtedly be a talking piece in gaming for years.

The Quarry is a great step forward for the team at Supermassive and further refines the systems that form the backbone of many of their recent titles. It plays with some classic horror tropes in some interesting ways, has a great cast of characters and plenty of ways the story can play out. While the playable walking sections do slow the overall pacing and the game featuring some technical problems, I did have a blast playing through the game numerous times and really hope to see many of these features implemented and further built upon again in the future Dark Pictures games we know are planned for the future.

While I love the formula Supermassive has created, I don’t think they have quite perfected it yet. But just as they’re closing in on the uncanny valley, they are also closing in on the perfect horror game.

But that doesn't change the fact that this is an entertaining and very worthwhile ride, and one that players might want to experience more than once from the beginning to see all of the different ways in which the deadly events at Hackett's Quarry can unfold (including all of the gruesome deaths).

While it's not exceptional, The Quarry is fun and exciting, with all the ingredient to be interesting even to non-fans of the genre that inspired the game.

For as much of a scaredy cat in regards to horror as I generally am, I have to say I’ve enjoyed my time with The Quarry a whole lot. As the game progressed and the story started to unfold, I found myself wanting to see more of it and stopped worrying about how uncontrollable some aspects of playing it are, something I was dreading when just starting out. If you’re anything like me, I urge you to give this game a chance, you might be surprised with just how surprisingly engaging it can be.
