The Cowabunga Collection is a fantastic compilation of some of the best TMNT games ever made, and it’s one of the premiere examples of a property managing to make the jump to video games without losing what makes it special in the first place.

Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is worth the price of admission. Some are duds, but most of them are excellent beatem-ups and a classic NES game that a lot of gamers grew up with. It’s nostalgia bait, but nostalgia is a valid feeling and can be cathartic- especially when it involves overcoming a game that used to crush you as a child.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection establishes a respectable standard when it comes to collections. Bringing back so many TMNT classics to current systems already makes it an important milestone in preserving old games, but the extra content gallery elevates this work to the status of one of the best products in the game industry in 2022.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is, without a doubt, a fantastic title. The nostalgia that oozes out of this title is unreal for hardcore fans. There is so much content to be had. Having said that I personally think if you aren’t a TMNT fan from back in the day then this title will not hold you for long. I also think for the casual TMNT fans who just love a quick trip on the original Turts arcade title. Then unless the price drops drastically you are probably better off having a quick trip to the Arcade Club for some IRL arcade action. For me personally, this was a treasure trove of titles. It even gave me the chance to play some Game Boy titles that I never had a chance to pick up back in the day. I award Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection a Thumb Culture Gold Award

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is one of the best retro gaming collections to come out in years. Obviously the developers absolutely loved the series, because every single moment of this collection is bursting with Ninja Turtle love. From including some of the best home console and arcade games, to including the most in-depth behind-the-scenes look at the games, The Cowabunga Collection sets the new standard for how retro collections should be. While the collection includes a few less than stellar games you should probably avoid, there are 8 great games to jump in to and have a great time. These are some of the best games to appear on a Nintendo (or Sega) console in the past and a great way to revisit these classics again today on Nintendo Switch.

Unless you already own all of these games on their intended, initial platforms, you will undeniably get your money’s worth from The Cowabunga Collection’s varied Ninja Turtle action. However, retro game haters and those who don’t care for “The Heroes in a Half Shell” will find little to no value in Digital Eclipse and Konami’s blast from the past.

Preserving licensed games is a noble endeavor, and Digital Eclipse are the best in the business, but many of The Cowabunga Collection's inclusions are best left in the '90s.

TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection is an enjoyable reunion which have gathered 13 classic games of the series. That being said, it's a little bit overpriced and I suggest you wait for it to go on sale and then you can purchase is with a more reasonable price

The important thing to note is that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game shouldn’t be written off just because it’s an NES port of a technically superior arcade game. Rather, it should be looked upon as a distinct experience that has its own value — and plenty of enjoyment to offer, even for a modern audience.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise rarely had a miss with games back in the ’80s and ’90s and this compilation exemplifies that. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a love letter to fans of that era that can be equally appreciated by old and new generations of Turtles fans alike.

So in answer to the question in the headline, yes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES is eminently worth playing today — just maybe consider playing it as part of the Cowabunga Collection rather than on an original NES, and you’ll probably find yourself having a much better time than you might expect!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a well-presented time capsule of classics, porting its beloved titles not only without lag but with modern-day improvements and a smorgasbord of extras to boot. While the collection won't be for everyone, those willing to dive in and see what Digital Eclipse have to offer should be blown away with what they find. For those who've missed that nostalgic feeling, it's truly time to love being a turtle once again.

For now, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game remains a noteworthy game from a historical perspective, and is definitely still worth playing today. Just be ready for the things it does a bit differently from the norm — and aware that some of its follow-ups provide an arguably superior experience, particularly if you’re playing alone.
