It almost feels like Star Ocean: The Divine Force’s existence is some sort of miracle. Even more so because, while there are some elements that can feel a bit dated and it isn’t exactly perfect, it’s generally a joyful and solid experience.

While Star Ocean: The Divine Force may not be the most revolutionary, prettiest, or most action-packed JRPG out there, its fantastic cast of characters and generally fun story do quite a bit to make the game's 40+ hour journey feel quite cozy. Add in the fact that you're guaranteed to get some uniqueness through its two protagonists having their own bespoke story beats that warrant multiple playthroughs and you've got plenty of JRPG to bite into here.

With its fun cast and expansive narrative, I found the game easy to get invested in, despite the predictably tropey JRPG melodrama. The mobility upgrades and combat overhauls make it the most fun Star Ocean game I have played yet. It's a shame that the awkward character models, ridiculously small text size and sluggish level up mechanics may prove a roadblock for some. If you're not already a Star Ocean or JRPG fan, Star Ocean: The Divine Force might not be that easy to get into. However, if you are willing to overlook some of its shortcomings, and want a fantasy action-RPG with a sci-fi twist, it is worth checking out.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force isn't the best JRPG of the year, but it's still full of heart, charm, and an unforgettable adventure. The game might have some lifeless character models and slightly janky AI, but the script brings those characters to life, and the AI is easy to ignore when the rest of the gameplay experience is so refreshing. This is the kind of fresh and fun Star Ocean sequel that long-time fans have deserved.

One positive point: the game is really of a higher quality than its predecessor. I had a lot of fun in my Star Ocean: The Divine Force journey and I believe that is the ultimate goal. Granted, the game is far from perfect but this series never was. If you stick with the story, you will definitely enjoy it as well as the personality of the characters, because the writing is so good. Unfortunately, I've also strained my eyes more often than I care to admit. For the role-playing enthusiast, I believe it deserves your attention.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force has a terrific battle system, a variety of unique exploration possibilities with a lot of vertical mobility, and a solid cast of characters, but the game's pacing can be a problem, and the writing is somewhat weak.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the latest entry in the long-running JRPG series, which has hit some stumbling blocks with its last release. The decision to have dual protagonists is a nice touch, especially given how likable they both are. Combat is also good for folks who prefer a more action-oriented system, with the DUMA mechanics adding even more options for players. The storytelling’s pacing can be uneven and its vast areas can also feel empty at times. Overall, though, it’s a solid addition to the Star Ocean franchise and a step back in the right direction.
At the time of landing on the planet Star Ocean: The Divine Force we had many reservations, mostly due to the disappointment reserved for us by the previous episode.

D.U.M.A. incorporates fun ideas when it comes to exploring and fighting, but beyond that Star Ocean: The Divine Force is an ordinary and grinding JRPG. And that's okay, because sometimes these games that are just good are just as fun as any AAA. Sometimes even more.
